Kogan Agora HD Mini 3G Tablet $179 (Price Drop) FREE Shipping

50

I had one of these, it was stolen. I will be replacing it with this same model. Running benchmarking software it outperformed my Samsung Galaxy S3 4G (only just, but is still pretty respectful). With these specs and local warranty it is unbeaten in my view at this price. It was introduced at $199 + Shipping. A nice deal at $179 and FREE shipping. Kogan also stock the cover and screen protectors for this tablet.

Cover is down to $19 (Originally $34) with free shipping

Screen protector is $12 (up from $7??) with free shipping (they have a tendency of folding the screen protector during postage, I have had 5 seperate protectors arrive damaged and it is a real pain to get them sent with proper packaging - you have been warned. Maybe that is why the price increased!).

Don't forget that it has a micro sd slot for storage expansion and it is 3G (not 4G) capable. There are some similar sized tablets coming out of tinydeal that have the newer Octa-core processor and a higher screen resolution (retina competitors)- but all that equates to shorter battery life. The battery life on the Kogan was pretty reasonable, better than any samsung tablets I have owned in the past.

  • I will also admit that I really like the size. 10" can be too big and heavy and a 7" is just too small. I run mapping software while off road and this screen was plenty big enough sitting on my dash. My Smasung was just too big. And I like that it is a MicroUSB port for charging - it is the same as everything else I have now which is nice.

"I will also admit that I really like the size. 10" can be too big and heavy and a 7" is just too small."
      That's what she said…

Similar price. Good brand. Much better specked. If you don't mind not dealing with Aussie business.

    • I never heard of the brand, but it's decently spec'd with a much much better Retina screen.

As I will never use it with 3G, can you recommend one similar (and cheaper) to the FNF iFive Mini without 3G?

I have an iPad 10inch, but want a cheaper 8inch Android for my son. Easy to download directly to Android so he can watch the same movie/clip 400 times over.

      • For me I would stick with this model even it has 3G actually as I have experience with this brand. Most of the similar priced and specked tablets have the inferior Rockchip RK3188 chip - the non-3G ifive mini 3 retina has the RK3188 instead of the MT6592.

If you can wait a little bit more, PIPO is releasing the PIPO P8 with the new and pretty powerful Rockchip RK3288 inside and for similar price without the 3G.

    • I like it !
Edit: WCDMA 2100 only. I dont' like it!

  • Would have been a reasonable deal a year ago

    • I do keep a close eye on tablets. I must say I very rarely see an 8" tablet with 3G capabilities at this price??

I agree (and knew there would be posts) about there being better spec ones out there. I was impressed with the Kogan and have found very little reviews on the overseas stuff (nothing positive anyway). I honestly had a positive experience with the kogan to the point I have ordered 3 others for friends and relatives, all of them very happy with the Agora. It's hard to find a decent spec tablet that comes with good recommendations. So this post is not just letting people know about the price drop, but also about my personal good experience with this tablet. The screen protectors though are another issue…..don't get me started!! Cheers.

Is Kogan short for Korean Bogan?

  • Well it would want to be good for that price @ those specs, but reviews are very mixed. Some say it's OK Some not.

taking all that into account, the net result is it's not a bargain, it's just $20 cheaper than it was at launch, with no rippoff shipping

How can they call something 1024x768 a HD Product?!

    • That is HD, you are thinking of Full HD.

Please note the following when you buy cheap Chinese tabs/phones. I am speaking from my personal experience after owning the well acclaimed Ainol Novo 9 Spark (RAM 2GB 9.7 Inch Retina Screen 4K Video Dual Camera etc)
    http://www.ainol-novo.com/ainol-novo-9-spark-ram-2gb-9-7-inc…

    1) It may have high specs on paper, but don't expect same performance. Mostly because the components are not same (eg: CPU may be clocked higher or has more cores, but different architecture/chipset)
    2) You are stuck with the Android version you buy with. I am still on Android 4.1, no updates
    3) Many applications doesn't work as expected. For example ooVoo (I think Skype too) chat doesn't recognize its camera. YouTube app stopped working recently and streaming via browser is choppy
    4) Touch screen and overall response not as smooth as a reputed brand. Eg: I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and it is miles apart!
    5) Recently there was a news that Chinese firmwares and apps have spyware built-in! If US has banned its several major government departments, including NASA, Justice and Commerce Departments, from purchasing Chinese products and computer technology due to suspected backdoors, then they are not wrong at all.

So don't expect to get the same quality and performance. True, you pay less, so expect less too! Then it isn't a bargain, more of a compromise :)

    • Very well said.

    • 1) If it has a higher clock, more cores and a smaller architecture, and more RAM, then it is probably is faster
      2) If you know how to flash, you have it rooted and will get quicker upgrades through comunities
