Been monitoring the airfares to U.S and have discovered low fares with Virgin Australia flying to L.A from Sydney.
The travel date I entered was from 2nd october 2014 to end of October. The total price I got was $2056 + $30 booking fee that Virgin charges. Not bad considering the same itinerary with Economy costs around $1800 RTN.
Last week when I checked for Premium it cost $3500+ rtn for the same route. Not sure how long this deal will last but I just booked two tickets.

Anyway First post so hope its a bargain for some.

  • Even Cheaper from Perth $1555

    • Can you break down how you got that price - i.e. dates/routes etc?

      • +5

I think that's the price for regular economy

  • back to their launch price for pre econ in 2009

I'd def be keen on flying them at that price again

    • +1

Yeah, pretty much launch price. Haven't seen premium economy this low for a long time. It is usually the only cabin which doesn't get the really low special fares.

    • I flew them premium economy in April 2009 and did not pay that low of a price. I think I paid $2500, Melb. to LA.

      • Yeah, they didn't launch at that price, but they came down to that level for a while.

        • +1

I have to say that the $2500 was worth every cent. On the way back, I had 4 seats in a row to myself in premium economy. I was able to fully lie down flat, just like in business ;) On the way there, I only had 2 seats to myself, though.

Great price! Should always be this price though.

  • This is very tempting. I found a few dates in July/Aug which work. Has anyone flown Virgin long-haul Premium before?

    • Yeah it's definitely worth it if you hate the long haul flight. I must admit their economy is pretty exceptional, but for a few hundred more premium is well priced. Normally at $3500 it's certainly not worth it. It's pretty much the same food, lots of alcohol and service, hot towels, dedicated toilets. Seats are 2-4-2 and have a 38" pitch i believe. Comparable to domestic business class.

  • Also managed to find MEL-LAX for $2040 and BNE-LAX for $2060. Late July/early August dates.

Mel-Lax return for next year (may-june on a tues or thurs) can get as low as $1700ish return … definitely contemplating!

  • Brilliant price, thanks for sharing.

    Hope it helps guys!

    can anyone explain this:

if i fly Wed 26th Nov its $1796.28 SYD to LAX and Mon 22nd Dec is $1729.48 LAX to SYD

if I fly the day before, Tue 25th Nov its $1061.28 SYD to LAX and Mon 22nd Dec is $994.48 LAX to SYD!

I understand the promo might finish on Tus 25th, but why can the 22nd Dec flight be so cheap only if taken on 25th Nov? Nearly $1500 difference return!

  • That Sucks, I just booked $3800 from SYD to MCO (Orlando) on Premium Economy last Friday.
Same flights are now $1200 cheaper….cant change them due to the fair conditions.

    • +12

I think you mean the unfare conditions.

    • That's just not fair…. Though it is fare.

Are you sure? All premium economy fares allow cancellation (some with fees) and refund. If you are booked in the lowest premium class the refund is to Travel Bank which is essentially a credit/virtual gift card to be used for Virgin Australia flights but still better to have this than nothing. If you are booked in the other premium classes the refund will go back to your original form of payment, eg. credit card.

Worth trying your luck for that amount.

*Note: I am not an official rep or reservations agent, I just happen to work for Virgin. The information above is taken from the website which I have linked to.

I was tossing up with Qantas and Virgin, as they both cost the same. The flight to Dallas was better in times, so I went with Qantas, although I did Virgin PE last year for the same flight and it was great.
Good luck to all the OZB people booking PE with Virgin. It is more like business class than just extra legroom economy.

  • This is tempting. If there were any good cheap economy deals I would go with that instead. But when I want to go, aug 2014 the premium economy works out to be around ony $200 more than regular economy so I guess it is better value?

  • Oh just to clarify this is for "premium saver" right?

    • +1

Yes, premium saver. There is no difference in the seat or service received, just slightly more restrictive fare rules.

      • When you say no difference, do you mean Economy and Premium are no different in terms of travel comfort, its just that there are better fare rules i.e. changing dates etc?

        • +1

Sorry, I meant there is no difference in travel comfort between Premium Saver and Premium fares. There is a significant difference in travel comfort between premium economy and economy.

        • Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Cheers.

        Hi Rep,
Can I upgrade a premium saver to business class with points?
        Thanks

  • do virgin do free booze on intl flights?

    • Yes, a copy the current Australia - LA menu can be found here.

      • thanks !

      • Menu looks a lot like Qantas Economy.

        • That's because that menu is for the regular economy section.

        • @Mikeologos: Says International Premium Economy

  • Remember to use entertainment book to get 5% off gift vouchers to spend on these flights? :)

  • Im trying to book a Sydney to San Fran, which goes via LAX. Can someone explain what it means by the following under carrier?

    Carrier:
Virgin Australia (I assume Virgin from SYD to LAX)
Compass Airline-Dl Connection-Dl Shuttle (What does this mean by Shuttle? Is it not only a domestic flight from LAX to SFO)

    • +1

The first flight SYD->LAX is with Virgin Australia (VA1).
The domestic leg LAX->SFO is with Delta, this is just a normal Delta domestic service. Although you will still have all the same baggage allowances, status, etc. that were on your international ticket.
