Samsung F90 HD Camcorder $177 @ OW

20

Cheapest price on static ice when you consider the cost of shipping from other sources.http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Samsung+F90+&spos=3

I think this is a good priced, entry level HD camera(720p 30fps) with a powerful zoom(52x) and CMOS sensor(superior low light performance). Reviews seem positive.

I'm in the market to upgrade my camcorder and I haven't noticed many bargains around. Infact, JB and DSE both have a dismal selection of camcorders in 2014. What went wrong? Is it all shoddy smart phone and action cams taking over the market now? In fact DSE even erroneously lumps action cams together with "video camcorders/cameras", that's just lazy categorising and incorrect. Camera house has a better selection of camcorders but everything is straight RRP on there.

    whats a camcorder?

    • There is no substitute for quality video output and range of features.

a device that often comes with optical image stabiliser + massive optical zoom and doesn't suffer from the effects of rolling shutter.

  • not sure why action cams can't be classified as video camcorders/cameras?
but yeah camcorders have become a niche product, like you've said for most people a smartphone/action cam is sufficient and more versatile whereas mirrorless/dslr and such are preferred for professional work…

I dont have pro cams or dslr's, but my old ancient Panasonic SD90 still destroys my Samsung Galaxy S5 when it comes to video.

Colour quality of phone cams just isn't there yet.

    • They don't have optical zoom for starters.

Most action camera's are fixed focus lenses with tiny lenses and small apertures. It means that action cams are great for well lit outdoors and moving shots where a camcorder might be hunting in and out of focus.

Mirrorless Digital SLR's cost heaps more than a camcorder. All of the consumer DSLRs have time restrictions on the size of the recorded file. The consumer DSLRs can't adjust the settings as easily or intelligently as a camcorder in auto mode (eg. changing light conditions from outdoor to indoor, shutter speeds, aperture size, changing zoom and focus).

Smartphones and action cams are sufficient for the facebook selfie generation that are making and editing short clips for upload and who don't mind reshooting themselves when the footage doesn't turn out right.

  • Are you in Sydney?

I feel you'd be better served by a 1080p camera for an extra ~$100 or so, e.g. http://www.georges.com.au/index.php/digital-video-digital-ca…

  • 1080p one is available for 240 at goodguys and $248 at dicksmith
    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Sony_HDRCX240_Full_H…

    • The trade off in zoom is a shame with that Sony. I love a long optical zoom. Needs to be at least 40x for my needs. Worth the extra cash for 1080 though.

  • Nice cam for $99 http://www.target.com.au/p/sony-handycam-reg-camcorder-hdrcx… if you are not looking for 40x optical zoom

    • Thanks mate. At that price I can definitely live with a smaller focal length. Will have to ring around to find stock.
Edit : "… use low-resolution sensors and interpolate the video up to HD resolution." That's nasty. I'll Pass on this.
