    wow nice,

anything good to do in manila?

    • +5

yep, jump on another plan to Cebu, or Phuket, or anywhere else…

go to the ktv's, hook up with local girls.

      • "Girls"

        Huh huh.

        • +1

Bakla is the term for girls-who-aren't-girls (as well as gay men).

        • Yes, my Filipino girlfriend got quite a giggle when she saw the Baklava for sale at a local kebab shop.

    • yeah, interested as well.. found this site: http://www.experiencephilippines.org/

Boracay, Cebu, (Oslob swim with whale sharks) Legazpi, Palawan… Philippines is amazing went there in Jan14 really didn't like Manila but

      • +6

        but what?

        • +1

Hahah sorry was to busy booking this flight. "But it had good shopping"

      • +4

I decided against Oslob for the Whale sharks because they feed them to keep them in one place.
        Whale sharks are migratory.
I didn't want to be contributing to an industry that may be directly harming such an awesome animal's future.

        • +1

Yes i was well aware of this, almost didn't go but the experience was too great to miss, and the photo's amazing. If i swam with whale sharks in Western Australia it was over $400 vs $10 in Oslob.

90% of the villagers income at Oslob is from tourism due to the whale sharks. The families get fed and so do the whale sharks. I guess its better then when they used to hunt them

Just got back from Cagayan de Oro down south. Absolutely beautiful part of the world.

Unless you're visiting family, there's not much in Manila. Watch this for some inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADNgEHFDYzo

  • Thats a ripper bargain.

FYI they are equivalent to AirAsia - flew with them Manila-PP and Coron-Manila 2months back.

    • their logo shows they are part of tiger air?

      • -6

        can't read?
they use Tiger to enhance their reach, same as Scoot do:
"Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB), the Philippines’ largest carrier entered into an alliance with Tiger Air (SGX: J7X.SI), Singapore’s largest low-cost carrier. The alliance allows both airlines to leverage on each other’s extensive route networks…"

      • I dunno who they are a part of, I was just commenting on the flight itself.. i felt it was comparable with the airasia product.

        • My reply was to irajohn90, not you.

    • +1

Less reliable than even AirAsia. Cancel flights if not enough bums in seats. Cabin crew and ground staff sensational though.

      • do you mean 'extra services'?;)

Safety is an issue… Philippines is ALWAYS IN HIGH CAUTION in almost every countries

We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in the Philippines because of the high threat of terrorist attack and the high level of serious crime.
Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.
Violent crime is a significant problem in the Philippines. See the Safety and security section.
Terrorist attacks could occur at anytime, anywhere in the Philippines, including in Manila. You should avoid places known to be terrorist targets. See the Safety and security section.
There is a high threat of kidnapping throughout the Philippines. The threat is highest in the southern Philippines, including coastal and island tourist resorts and dive sites, including in remote locations in the Sulu Sea and along the Zamboanga Peninsula. Groups based in the south are capable of carrying out kidnappings and launching attacks in other parts of the Philippines, including areas surrounding the Sulu Sea such as Palawan, and other locations frequented by tourists.
We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to eastern Mindanao (including the provinces of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur) due to the very high levels of violent crime and the high threat of terrorist attack.
We strongly advise you not travel to central and western Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga del Norte and Sulu Archipelago, due to the very high threat of kidnapping, terrorist attack, violent crime and violent clashes between armed groups.
The typhoon season normally runs from late May to early December. This is also the rainy season when tropical storms, flooding and landslides may occur.

Might as well not travel at all!

    • +7

All those places mentioned are in the remote fringes of the country.
Stick to the main tourist areas or the cities and you should be fine.
The people are extremely polite and friendly, almost always speak english and are willing to help.

      • That's been my experience on two trips in the last few years.

      • +3

The killing of a mayor, his wife and an 18 month baby at the major Manilla airport recently last year. Does that count? That's the capital city. You are not always safe even in the main tourist areas. There are many examples of this in that country. Palawan, which is a beautiful spot, also has had kidnappings. I think it is better to ensure people are reasonably cautious, so they can decide on what they want to do.

        • I thought you were joking!

XXX dressed in police uniforms XXX

Ukol Talumpa, mayor of Labangan in the southern province of Zamboanga del Sur, his wife and at least two others were shot dead by two men on a motorcycle, dressed in police uniforms. Five others were wounded in the December 20 attack at the arrivals area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

        • Most memorable moment for me was when a police officer took a bus full of tourists hostage in Manila and it was broadcast live on tv while SWAT stormed the bus and shot him. Crazy stuff! Still, I actually liked Manila and would visit again but like others have said, your time is best spent in the islands.

          Warning:explicit language.

FWIW, been to the Philippines 3 times. Stay away from the southern part of the southern area (Mindanao). Otherwise, always be aware of your valuables.

          That's my wife's advice (who's filipino).

        • +1

Philippines is a safe and beautiful country with friendly locals (many who speak english). I've been about everywhere in SE Asia bar Burma/Myanmar and Philippines has been the highlight.

It's also dirt cheap, the perfect international holiday location for an OzBargainer.

    • +2

Good if you know what you're doing. It's not safe… Especially for Australians who generally lack common sense.

    • +1

I believe the government's warning is there for a reason, especially when it is not just by one government. But have to agree that's really really cheap.

  • +9

Philippines is an interesting country. This is an incredible price for a return airfare from an Australian port.

However, beware, as soon as you land you really need your wits about you - corruption and crime is rife at every level of life and dealing over there. It starts in the airport, especially Nino Aquoy airport (assuming that is where Cebu Pacific flies into).

I wouldn't spend much time in Manila - its incredibly congested, I would compare it to the Mexico City of the APAC region (although I would say Jakarta also falls into that category). Definitely head straight back out to Cebu, Boracay, or any one of the country's thousands of other islands…

  • +1

Ridiculously cheap… cheapest ive ever been able to get there is 480 and thats flying through singapore with scoot then changing

  • I wonder if the people badmouthing the security in Philippines have actually been there, or have been outside Manila? I know there are problems down south - but thats why you dont go there. Same as the wrong parts of Malaysia/Thailand/Indonesia - you just dont go there, its no different for Philippines.

I cant comment on Manila, other than it appeared to be a overpopulated, polluted, congested SEAsian city in the ~24hrs I spent there (I had little interest in the place), but Palawan/Coron islands were magnificent, with no troubles at all experienced, and would return in a heartbeat.

    • +5

I have been there many, many times and what people are saying is correct. It is dangerous (my brother almost got kidnapped, and I've been in more hairy situations than I'd care for), and unless you know what you're doing/how to take care of yourself/all the tricks people play, you can get yourself into trouble. If you've been to Bangkok/Phuket and expect it to be similar, it's not. Life is cheap there. It's incredibly sad, but that's the way it is and if you go there expecting to be fine cos you're a tourist, or because you spent time in Thailand/Malaysia without trouble, you'll be mistaken.

  • ITA Matrix reports Manila to Los Angeles return flights are as low as $880 with China Southern. Doesn't quite get you to the US at less than $1000 but it's close.

  • +3

My partner (white Aussie) and I (Filipino-Aussie) have visited Manila half a dozen times already. He feels quite secure. Shopping there is amazing. Dental treatments are top-notch.

BUT Manila is not the Philippines. Even the neighboring provinces have a lot to offer.

  • Sheez.. $143… ! crap im in melb. definitely dont waste too much of your time in manila (for none locals it will probably be a culture shock and can be stressful for first time travellers). Great shopping centres & lots of tourist spots but you do need a tourist guide to get around and unlock those pretty cool spots).

Saying that… go travel places such as Palawan, Cebu, Boracay… etc Cheap & magnificent diving spots in Palawan( coron).. a few japanese shipwrecks to explore.

  • I've been on the site for a while and i can't see any of these 'bargain' fares - keeps giving me 'promo' fares which are still high, even when traveling within promo period. Anyone been successful?

    • +1

I booked SYD - MNL return $143 in December i can still see heaps of fares at that price, try the month view it might help you find it better :)

      • thanks, how many do you have travelling?

      • Gone now…

    • The way that I read it, the sale has not started yet!? Start date 19 June ??

      • Up to June 19 - all the cheap fares seem to be gone.

  • I never flown with Cebu Pacific Air but their Cabin Crew are worldwide known to be great dancers. There are a few of their demo musical versions on youTube

For that price it´s worth checking it out.

  • +8

I'll probably be downvoted for pessimism… but.. my two cents:

I lived in Manila for 5 odd years (2005-2010), and have been traveling there 3-4 times a year since I was 13 (white Caucasian here btw, family have worked there as expats since 1990). The Philippines is a great country, but I agree with the other posters urging caution if you are not an experienced traveler. You will get ripped off, corruption is a serious issue (FYI, one of my best friends were held up by police just two years ago for everything they had, another was stabbed in a backstreet of Makati about 7 years ago while another got in a cab drunk and was dumped in an ally somewhere in Malate butt naked at 3am in the morning more recently). I know of people who have been shot (doorman outside of Fridays in p burgos in 2006/2007) and raped. If you are smart, careful and don't get yourself into trouble it can be a fantastic place and I still consider Manila my home. There is no shortage of islands to visit, but for a novice it would be worth securing a good tour guide even if staying in Manila.

So, long story, I'd discourage novice travelers or people likely to get into trouble, but if you have your wits about you and are open to new experiences Manila can be a great place to visit outside of the smog and poverty. A lot of posters here would tell you to forget Manila and head to Cebu/Boracay, and while I disagree with this sentiment it goes to show just how overwhelming/toxic Manila can appear if you don't have a good local contact/guide.

Also, Cebu Pacific are mostly fine but they have a long history of safety bungles and is something worth considering. They had a few minor crashes last year - no fatalities though. They are not as safe as AirAsia, and while I have flown with them 20-30+ times I now try to avoid them if at all possible (there cheap fares like this can make it hard though!).

Happy to help any ozbargainers with travel tips if anyone is interested, or otherwise I could provide 10,000 other stories about why you shouldn't visit (haha!).

    • These examples you are giving were they mostly locals or do they include tourists?

      • All expats/tourists, of course. If I were to include local stories… A local kid I went to school with there actually got kidnapped when in primary school. His family is super wealthy though, and they had to ransom him. It was pretty big in the media at the time apparently.

I spent a number of years at the coveted International School there, so I went to school with all of the expat kids, knew their families and had countless friends/family business acquaintances pass through over the years.

    • Hi mykii, just wondering, how does Manila compare to Bali? Been to Bali a couple of times now and have found it great - basically don't be an idiot and you're fine over there! A lot of touristy things to do? Might jump on Trip Advisor and have a look :)

      • +3

different experience to bali if you are comparing it to manila.

any of the mentioned tourist islands, palawan, boracay, etc.. is breathtaking vs bali .. been to bali 10 or so times.

      • +1

Manila is a one day city max! I had been advised of this before travelling there last year, I thought surely 3 days could easily filled….. So I booked three…. I was wrong, there is nothing for the tourist that can't been seen in a day! People were very friendly though, and jollie bee is worth a look!

        • You're obviously getting bad advice and looking in the wrong places..

The shopping, night life and food have improved immensely over the last few years. L.

        • +1

The advice came from ex residents of Manila, I ignored them and stayed longer. Been to all the Asian capitals, with the exception of those of Nth Korea and Myanmar, Manila is my least favorite. The Phils is about the islands, not the cities.

        • I'm living there and it is not safe. If you haven't been there before I'd suggest to go with someone who at the least has been there a few times.

Australia has been overnannied and our common sense doesn't exist (danger signs everywhere)- there's a reason why our travel insurance is so high compared to the rest of the world.

    • +1

manila… would I live there is a different story to TOURING/VISITING.!!! I could exactly say the same thing in Brunswick, VIC.. People getting raped, shot, stabbed, etc..

Travelling any part of the world you'll need to be cautious!

The only thing I will agree with you is.. YOU will need a GUIDE to take you around in places in Manila! These can be arrange as packages… Vehicle, driver, tour guide… hassle free!

  • +2

Crazy cheap. Love it when a new budget airline reaches Australia, the more the merrier!

  • +1

Just don't complain when you die of cramp

"The most tightly packable flights ever to operate on a scheduled basis to an Australian airport will arrive from September in the form of Cebu Pacific Air A330-300s with 436 seats."

"The tiny narrow nine across all economy seats measure only 41.9 cms or 16.5 inches between the armrests, which is around 3.75-5 cms less than would be found across a range of different configurations in economy class cabins on Australian domestic and international services in general, and with around 5 cms less legroom than the the majority of those flights."

    http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2014/06/16/cebu-paci…

    • I found ones for 95 there and 40 back, so there definitely are cheap returns available.

  • +1

for 173 you can have return with bags on way back, pack light on way there and buy a suitcase there (less than 30 AUD in most asian countries) and you have a spare suitcase when you get back :D

thats the ozbargain way to do it.

  • +1

Been flying with Cebu Pacific (domestic and international) for the past few years. The planes aren't fancy but the staff are friendly. I'll say this, I feel way more shame when I fly Jetstar. The staff don't give two shits and all their planes seem to have this strong air fuel stench when they land whereas I've never experienced that with Cebu Pacific. Never flown Tiger so I can't compare.

There are some things to see in Manila but I suggest taking some other cheap flights out of town. There are a lot of incredibly beautiful places outside of Manila. Palawan is magnificent, I'm gonna move there some day.

  • I can't see any seats for $99 any more between start of October to end of November.

  • There's still one seat left of $99 on 26 October, but I need three. lol.
