A camera or a camera-phone?

Hey,

I am traveling soon and thinking of getting myself a camera - Cancon SX600 from Jb for $299, got WIFI so can connect and share photos direct to phone via app.

However now I am thinking why not take the money and spend it on a camera phone?

The camera only going to be used for general travel photos, couple photos at a wedding and maybe some videos….nothing pro like.

So yeah, what does everyone think is the better buy:
a) Proper camera
or
b) Phone with a proper camera

If b) which phones have proper camera?

I would always choose a stand-alone camera, mainly due to the lack of optical zoom on a phone.

Also, if your photo needs are so modest, do you really need a $300 camera just for the wifi? I would get something more simple in the $100 to $150 range and wait till you get home to transfer your photos to your computer / phone the standard way.

  • I wouldn't get a camera phone unless you actually also need the phone itself as they generally don't have the same camera quality as normal cameras with equivalent pricing. For the camera part I reckon a basic camera like what Smulder suggested would be fairly decent for your needs and if you need more memory you can just use the difference to buy a bigger memory card.

Nokia lumia phones generally have fairly decent camera's/software, the lumia 1020 is one of the best camera phones but that's out of your price range so possibly the lumia 1320 or the lumia 925.

Camera phones are pretty great, but only when lots of light. They really suck in low light conditions. If you think you are going to be anywhere with low light and shadow conditions a 'proper' camera would be much better.

The point and shoot cameras these days are seriously good and would be worthwhile.

I use the camera connection kit with an iPad as a way of getting photos off quickly.

  • Buy a proper little compact.

Going back just a few years, almost all of the reasonably priced compacts had 3x zooms. Now, even cheaper, smaller and in every other way better little cameras can be bought - decent 3x zoom ones for ridiculously cheap prices, and many (still nicely priced, still crazy-small) cameras with much bigger zooms. When travelling light, they can sub for a pair of binoculars that you might otherwise wish you had at a given point!

Whatever proper little camera you buy - relative to a even a good phone camera, you won't regret it.

  • If you're worried about carrying a lot, get a camera + phone in one…

But if you want both camera + phone here's another camera option… (refurbished 30x zoom, 20mp, wifi)

  • Definitely a smart phone with a good camera.
We stopped taking our camera on holidays a long time ago.
Aim for something with a minimum of 8mp.
They can produce as good a pic as the low priced digital cameras.
I've been using a cheaper smart phone lately with only a 5mp camera and with the indoor shots they come out perfect with the flash turned off!!
A good smartphone would be very adequate for your needs…
