The Good Guys price match promise?

Saw a TV on special in JBHIFI, verified that it was in stock. Called up the local good guys store and asked if they had the same TV in stock - they said yes. Asked if they would then price match as per their policy advertised online and instore - and they flat out said no.

I called The Good Guys corporate and asked the same thing - they said it is up to individual store managers. How is this not deceptive and misleading advertising?

Anyone ever got them to successfully match any prices?

  • Better yet, you could ask them to price beat. Link here to conditions.

I would say go into the store with a copy of the TV description and the price (photo or from catalogue). Also print this out:

*The item must be sold by an authorised dealer in Australia of the relevant manufacturer. For online competitor prices the item must be available for immediate shipment. The item must be for the same brand and model and the product must be new and factory sealed. It must also be subject to a manufacturer’s warranty applicable in Australia. Competitor’s prices must be in Australian dollars and will be adjusted for any fees, taxes or other charges such as shipping. Our “30 Day Price Guarantee” does not apply to Boxing Day ‘Knockout’ prices, advertising errors or misprints, bonus offers, limited or minimum quantity offers, clearance, and finance offers. The terms and conditions of our “30 Day Price Guarantee” are subject to change without notice. Refunds will be paid out in the same payment method as the original transaction. If we’ve offered to price beat the competition before you buy, then this voids the 30 Day price guarantee.

Proceed to wave it in their faces until you are escalated to seeing the manager. Say "Australian Consumer Law" and then enjoy your new discounted TV.

  • I've done a few price matches with them and never had a problem.

They do make the offer and should stick by it, no matter what branch. If they refuse they can be reported.

  • buy it at the normal price and then once payed present the 30 price guarantee i done this and it worked for me.

  • +3

Why not just buy it at JB/ask there for a better price?

  • Hi foggy10,

I had some luck with TGG late last year on a 60 inch TV. I posted about it on OZB afterwards. Have a read if it helps https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122473

I also noticed when going into store there were little cardboard displays that stated their price match policy which included a clause about matching online prices with proof in way of smartphone or printout etc etc.

Unless it has changed since then don't take no for an answer.

Also as stevednj48 said… buy the TV and then you magically find a better price… They have the 30 day price match policy… either way your covered. You are actually financially better off doing it that way anyway as if memory serves they refund you 120% the difference.

I wish you best of luck!

    • Hello I need your urgent advice! Which is best price beat policy:

      Office Works' 5%
      or
The Good Guys - If you do find a lower advertised price within 30 days of your purchase, The Good Guys will happily Payback 120% of the difference.

I am looking to purchase this iPhone 7 for the sis: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/307980

      Thanks in advance!!!

  • Mine has done it twice.

Last week was $30 off a Samsung 7" tablet also advertised on DSE on-line.

    Immediate price match.

  • First ask they said this is as low as they would go, even after showing the competitors price.
Stated their website said price match competitors then they they said ok.
Had all my printouts in had but wasn't needed except for the advertised price.

  • I am seeking advice on a similar matter. I purchased a vacuum from the GG ebay store for $498 using the ebay 20% offer. When I went to pick up the vacuum (Nunawading), the invoice said i paid a total of $498 and as per their price beat guarantee would beat the price difference by 120%. I found a competitor selling the same vacuum for $40 less and showed them the advertisement. At first it appeared they were going to price match but then the manager advised that I had paid less than the advertised price using ebay and as such, the price beat guarantee was not valid.

I advised that the promotion was an ebay promotion and the good guys had not provided the discount. The total paid to the good guys was $498 as stated on my receipt. I also said that if I got a cash back offer from my credit card for using my amex, that doesnt change the fact that another store is selling it for less than the GG price beat guarantee is still valid. THe manager kept saying he didnt understand how the ebay offer worked and as such he wouldnt honour it.

Either way, its only a small differential but on the princple of the matter, I was keen to see what others thought. Am i entitled to use the price beat guarantee?

    • So you paid $400, and want them to do a price beat on $460? Sorry if it seems harsh, but about the only entitlement involved here is your sense of it.

Because the retailer gave you an invoice stating that you paid 25 per cent more than you did, doesn't change the fact that you didn't.

  • Good Guys weren't interested in price matching anything or anyone when we bought a few fridge 6 months or so ago.
They just said "This is the best price we can do", and the best price was higher than other quotes I had already got.

Tried 2 GG stores as well, same reaction each time. Walked out and haven't been back since.

  • Breville Dual boiler BES920 with Smart Grinder BCG820 advertised STAXONLINE for $1360 delivered. Went to Good Guys Osborne Park - after 15 minutes waiting for someone to show any interest I showed the printout to the assistant and she said she would need to check it online. This took at least 20 minutes with another ? manager. The sales assistant came back to me and apologised for the wait. She said they could match the price but they would have to order the grinder in and it would take 1-2 weeks! I asked why I couldn't take one of the 12 grinders sitting in front of me and she said because they were on special (still $70 more than JB's).
These guys are deceptive and dishonest when it comes to their policy - they did not want to discount to price match although they wouldn't say that knowing full well that I could order it online and receive it quicker.
Anyway I drove 1km down the Rd to JB HiFi Osborne Park - great service within 1 minute, agreed to price match and better the price in less than 1 min - received my coffee machine and grinder and out of there in less than 7 minutes.
I have bought heaps of appliances, large and small from the Good Guys Osborne Park over time and will not visit there again unless the last resort as they are disinterested in customer service and dishonest.
JB HiFi Osborne Park over The Good Guys any day

  • Yeh, I've noticed they will usually try to get out of it.

I bought something a while ago, a few weeks later saw a better price, and then sent in the price beat to GG online.
GG online accepted the price beat, and forwarded to a GG store.
The GG store also accepted the price beat with the competitors price.

I then went in the a day or 2 later, and that morning GG's lowered their price for the item to the same as the competitors price.

When I went up to the desk, the sales person said after looking at the paper "oh that's our price anyway" and proceeded to refund 100% of the difference.
I told them I did all this 2 days ago, and it was accepted to beat the competitors price, which is 120%.
They said, well its their price now, so they will just match it to that, same thing anyway….

I wanted to explain why its not the same thing, but I couldn't be bothered, and just accepted the 100% difference.

But the worst thing of all, 98% of the time I try a price match, or price guarantee, the sales team at the desk are always pissed off at something and never friendly…. I feel like yelling at them, if you don't like your own figging policy, get rid of it or quit and find another job…

  • I bought a GPS from GoodGuys Fyshwick find out that GPS was about $15 cheaper at Dick Smith next day when I went back to store with proof of lower price guy at check out refused any kind of refund at all by saying that it has to be online advertisement and not in store.

I found it very dodgy and dishonest to say the least.

I'll never go to The Good Guys or should say THE Worst Guys again .

Can anyone please guide me what can I do to get the price difference that I paid and is their any department I can contact or report them anywhere?

  • I bought aDyson DC37C Origin Barrel Vacuum from GoodGuys Bankstown. Few days later (3 days) I noticed that JB Hi-Fi is selling the same with lower price ($46 less) When I went to the store and asked for price match they didn't accept my claim.
Later I made my claim online but didn't received any response, then I tried to contact the on the phone few times, every time they disconnected my call.
Then I stopped going for the claim.
How can they use the Name 'THE GOOD GUYS'(may need a change to something else) even without keeping their own words?

  • would anyone be able to confirm that if you buy something of their ebay store, the GG's price match policy would still apply? can't see anything on their terms and conditions.

  • Tried to get the 30 day claim on a tv today. Showed them the better price… "that's not the same tv", me: "yes, it is". Off to a good start, as expected. She runs off to get a higher up manager i guess, who is a very strange character. He says its the same model, then calls jb-hifi in frankston and says their out of stock now (even though i bought the TV two days ago, when the tv definetly would have been in stock) and says he cant beat it, as the tv has to be in stock. Okay, show him the second voucher at a dollar cheaper than the previous one i showed him. Says they have stock in the store and i can claim it, but i have to do it online???

    Yet what is this?
    http://puu.sh/mj1H6/639a3a9141.png
"You can also claim against local competitors but only in store. The relevant local competitor must have a ‘bricks and mortar store’ within 30km of the relevant The Good Guys store where you purchased or picked up your purchase."
There was a store, in stock, in the area, yet he still told me to go online. Plus the board sign inside the store says the brick and mortar store must be in Frankston, but online it says 30km, obviously a huge difference as 30ks covers almost up to Melbourne. How can they have a contradiction in their own policy? Wtf.

I also read all of the fine print and it said nothing of competing stores having current stock when you make the claim.

So i go online to claim and find the options for the refund are store credit and store credit on a card only. Its been 90 minutes and have yet to get a single email about making an account or confirming they got the claim i made…

F*** the good guys and their 120% 30 day guarantee.

    0/10 would not do again.

    • Had a similar experience today, had a monitor on hold, found it literally about $100 cheaper at Centercom 5km away, had the item on lay-by, phoned up prior to see if I could get a price match, they said they just had to verify the item was in stock, come in store and after looking it up I was told that Centercom is not a "competitor". I asked to see where that was written in the terms and conditions but the manager refused to show me and told me to look it up on the website when I got home, he offered me about $40 less the original price in their store or my money back. After going home and reading their website I seen the same extract you point out above.

Called customer service for clarification they agreed it was not written there but that a competitor is to the managers discretion despite what the T&C state, they also have a list in store of who they will beat, I told him the manager specifically referred me to the website and refused to show me himself despite standing in front of a computer. Customer service said that all he can do is put a complaint in to the store manager and there was no number to contact head office so there nothing further I can do.

So I am really negative on dealing with TGG now, the fact they outright refused to help me after I phoned before I come in to top it off left a real sour taste in my mouth, I don't like my chances of taking it further so I think I'll just buy it from Centercom or maybe FUTU with the current 20% eBay sale, although I'm not keen on returns to FUTU if the monitor has an issue in the 3 year life span.

      • Hi, whats FUTU?

        • Google is your friend although the sale I was referring to was obviously ages ago, so I'm not sure why you would need to know about the retailer offering the item, either way there you go.
