These usually go on sale for $99 at office works.

    • +2

It's been a very long time since we've seen these on special, especially under $100, this isn't a bad deal at all.

      • +2

They're on special reasonably often, and you can walk in and haggle with JB on any given day! Sundays are usually the best!

      • +6

Wasn't that long ago. Just over a month actually…

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141701

    • There you go onggie, technically your neg could now stand as they're advertised in HN catalog for $108. ;)

  • +12

Unless OW current price is $99 your neg is invalid
Please don't abuse your vote and use with responsibility
And just wondering what I am doing here in first place.

    • +2

Agreed that unless you can see it advertised for less than the $109, don't neg it. But his comment about the $99 is completely valid!

    • +7

Uh oh, time for another hissy fit but the looks of it…

    • Please don't quit again :(

Luckily,Ozbargain still have quality posters like TA, EC, Unity1

    • +3

Hilarious, it was TA that triggered the event I linked to above and you've ripped shreds of EC for editing your posts.

Here is an example for those that forgot or never saw it.

Why are people so sensitive about votes on the Internet?

If you think you've posted a great deal within the rules of the site then why care? It's not like those Votes count toward anything anyways….

      • Exactly, it will either be revoked by the community when it gets 6 negs (which has now occurred) or by a mod when one comes along.

    • Deep breath everyone, deep breath.

    Well
Time to get back to work
This argument will benefit no one
    Have a good day all
    Regards

    • Enjoy your day :)

  • While this is a decent price. These things are so 2010.

Get a Chromecast instead. Much better and much cheaper

    • +6

it is my understanding i need another device to cast from?

i cannot play local media without one? so they completely different

      • Good point. Most houses do have a PC and wifi. But yes if you dont have that then the chromecast aint good for you and get this instead.

    • Chrome cast looks interesting but the DNS entries are locked to Google's servers and can't be easily worked around. Therefore not a great solution for Aussie Netflix users.

WDTV Live works with Netflix no probs.

Still curious about Chromecast though. Could be good for taking on holidays.

    • Chromecast has no DTS pass-through and unlikely it ever will. That means no audio for DTS content. As mentioned it also needs something to cast from and it cannot play network media directly.

  • last time this was on sale, WD was offering $50 cash back. Downside was, cash back took like 6 months

    • +1

last time this was on sale, WD was offering $50 cash back.

That cash back offer was about 18 months ago now! I bought 2!!!

  • Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying one of these.

After reading so many great reviews on these, I bought one via an OW price match last month. I was hoping to use it to play all the MKV files that I get my hands on. I must say that I am disappointed.

Even after installing all the updates it does not play most of the MKV files I have.

This may not be the WDTV's fault, perhaps my expectations were set to high. So you are wanting one of these to play everything you have, please keep in mind that it is not a magic box that will do so. You still will need to encode these files (which kind of defeats the purpose of buying the player in the first place). My PS3 is just as good a media player if I have to encode the files anyway.

    • +7

mkv is just a container.. so there could be a variety of obscure codecs inside.

i had a wdtv and it played 99% of things i threw at it. generally sourced from major release groups.

    • See if there's an alternate firmware for it, WDLX is what many run in the older model and it plays near everything but I'm not certain if its available for this model.

This is a reply to vermiculite below, on phone and clicked the wrong reply button.

      • AFAIK the WDTV live firmware is locked

    • +1

I use MakeMKV and my WDTV player has no problems playing them.

    • +2

I still have my gen 1 WDTV (bought the week it arrived in Australia!), in all that time, there would have been less than 10 instances it couldn't play a mkv. Are you downloading something with a very obscure codec? I find if the WDTV can't play, nothing else that plugs into my tv can, either.

      • Pirate bay. Guess explains it.

    • Even after installing all the updates it does not play most of the MKV files I have.

My ancient 1st-gen WDTV Live hasn't ran into one file format/codec it couldn't play.

I would definitely look at the codec/bitrate of the files in question that are refusing to play. They may need some re-encoding.

      • The only thing mine doesn't seem to like is AAC5.1 audio, it will play AAC2.0 no problem but complete silence when it's a 5.1 track. AC3 and DTS no issues at all. Weird.

It also doesn't like H.265 but that's to be expected.

        • +1

foobar, Under audio video settings on the latest firmware if you untick AAC then 5.1 AAC will be played through as stereo

        • I know what you mean. In my case some AC3 5.1 tracks do not work when Audio Output is set to Digital (HDMI) but changing it to Stereo fixes that.

    • I bought mine when the cashback was on and I haven't had a problem playing an mkv yet. The only problem I have had was having to remux the iview mp4 but that was also true for windows media player.

  • +3

I have not had a problem with MKV files on my WDTV live. I did have to roll back the firmware once when it did not detect my hdd after an update. I find it great for playing local content such as kids movies (no sticky fingers on DVDs). Maybe I am so 2010 :)

  • +1

Good(ish) price, mediocre product. Or rather, things have moved on while these players have not. I'd rather get a player that can interface with the popular media servers (Media Browser 3, Plex etc.) that provide a much richer & user friendly experience

    • +1

It does interface with plex though

      • Only through DLNA, which is pretty much the same as browsing a local HDD. Unless there is now a way to install a Plex client on the WD? Last time I checked there wasn't.

  • great post thanks. this is def a good price ppl at the moment if your after one. its 3rd generation model

  • These are very slow and outdated devices.

Don't waste your money there are much better devices available.

    • +4

      such as?

      • Roku 3 comes to mind, but not available locally, so warranty could be an issue if things go wrong.

      • Raspberry pi with xbmc

    • Roku3 looks good but you can't change DNS settings so have to alter in your router instead, which some people don't like. I personally prefer to change at the device level so not all think they are in the US!

    • As much as I like this player, I too thought it was a bit slow… Until I upgraded router to a DSL2890. The difference is amazing!!!

  • So the consensus is these are over priced slightly outdated tech essentially?

  • Is this my solution I'm looking for? I'm looking to setup the TV with something better than HDMI cable dangled to obsurely balancing laptop on cabinet - but I'm not sure which direction to go. Roku3, WD Live, Chromecast or Raspberry Pi? I'd like something that works with centralised local media, and smarten's up my aging TV. I've heard good things about RPi, but looking for any direction/advice on what and why!

    • +2

Hey gregl, I was in your situation a few weeks ago plugging in the damn laptop whenever I wanted to stream from my NAS. I bought a 2nd hand WD TV Live (current model, 6 months old) and so far I'm pretty happy! I wanted something that plugged in over Ethernet as I didn't want to congest my wifi. If you've got a NAS or shared media folder this device will do nicely. I haven't yet found a video file it won't play, and it's got some cool apps in it like Youtube and ABC TV.
But I do have a couple of friend's who are loving the Raspberry Pi, but it comes down to what you need. I was looking for media support and physical Ethernet connectivity.
Word to the wise, keep an eye on your local Gumtree, people are upgrading their TV's to Smart TV's, so they are selling off their WD TV Live, picked mine up for $60 locally.

      • +1

Thanks for the awesome info. & huge thanks for the 2nd hand angle - I hadn't thought of it, but its definitely a great way for me to setup cheaply and upgrade/swap later if I choose. Hugely grateful. Thanks again.

    • +1

I can't say it's the best… But certainly very easy to setup and operate! I'm running a NAS drive direct into my DSL2890 router to 3 WD Lives over wifi! I used to have the network drop out every now and then, but put this completely down to the p.o.s. Optus supplied router. Since upgrading I very rarely have an issue!
Edit: I also have media folders on the PC and laptop that I stream from from time to time!

      • Thanks Snoop. Great to hear about the router fixing drop-out issues, because that was one of the main problems I've seen reported everywhere. Appreciate the info.

  • I wont neg but find it cheaper at around $100 when ever it's on sale in most stores.
