I bought their W230ST unit from their last sale. Please be mindful that though they state their build times to be around 15 days, it could take longer. It took about a month for my unit to arrive. Even longer for the requested OS to arrive, I'm guessing another week and a half on top of that. Still a great deal, but try to be patient and understand that it will take a while to get to you. Those heading overseas, please keep this in mind.

I still haven't got mine W355SS from last sale, it is still at payment accepted status.. :'(

      • +1

Most W355SS orders will be shipped within around a week. We try our best to be both extremely thorough with our orders and to ship them as soon as we can, but sometimes they can take a while.

        • My P370SM-A shipped two weeks after order, so one week earlier than the quoted 15 business days (it was "in stock" on their site though). I got SMS and email when it shipped.

    3200x1800 13.3-inch QHD

What the…? For once it's way beyond what most laptops this size display. I'd like to see how small the icons go!

    • +2

Yeah you'll need to adjust the DPI if you want to use the laptop at those resolutions

Also note that not all apps will scale properly with high DPI settings (dropbox for example doesn't scale properly so you end up with this tiny little window in the task bar)

    • +3

      notepad with 6pt font =D

      • +1

A "point" is an absolute unit of measure. On display or printout, 6pt should look exactly the same size, regardless of PPI, whether it's on default Windows (96ppi), above screen (276ppi), new LG 6" QHD (700ppi) or that typed on traditional typewriters (used by your grandpa) with effectively infinite PPI.
High PPI shouldn't change the size of the render, it just allows more pixels to be used to improve quality of the render.

    • Fantastic resolution! The fact that it is glossy and dimmer than the lower res displays means using it with any sort of background light may not be that pleasant.

  • Anyone owns one of these? I'd like to know how noisy/silent the fan is and how warm the whole laptop is under load. Thanks.

    • +4

Under Windows I run it under the quiet profile with a 70mV undervolt and the fan rarely comes on for menial tasks. Under heavy load it gets gets fairly loud but not shockingly so. Day to day and even under gaming I've rarely been able to push it to 100% fan naturally; you can force this by pressing Fn+1 on most Clevo laptops anyway.

  • Why do they persist with 2 x USB3 and 1 x USB2? Cost savings? Limitation of the mainboard? I'd rather pay a touch more and have 3 x USB3.

    • I have one. Can confirm 3x USB3.0 and 1x USB2.0.

    • +10

Well for compatibility issues its good that they have one USB2 slot. Some of my older peripherals don't play nice with USB3, even though it is supposed to be backwards compatible.

      • I concur.

        • I thank you

      • Interesting, I've never had any product compatibility issues with USB2 stuff on USB3 yet, various USB portable driver, USB desktop drives, USB sticks, card reader etc.

        • I've struggled to boot to usb3.

        • Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've not had it personally with a whole bunch of older devices. Maybe I've just been lucky. I'd prefer to have all USB3 ports on any new laptop.

        • I've had plenty, wireless mice and keyboards playing up (have to put them into usb 2 slot) some external HDD's show up but then for whatever reason disappear n u have to plug them back in, external hdd plugged into usb3 made wireless mouse and keyboard play up, unplug it and everything back to normal .. :)

and no they weren't on the same machine nor were they the same external devices… :) just diff experiences with desktop and laptops usb3 n 2 ports.

i work in IT so i get to see more of this than typical user…

  • Jack from LBO seems to be AWOL.
He hasn't posted anything in whirlpool or here in a while.

Been look at this for a while, they listed this model last week and just saw the sale today.

It's not available till end of June + 15 days build time, so you're looking at mid July at the latest.

Does anyone know if they take the money out right away or when the product is in assembly ?

    • I'm around, just on vacation at the moment :)

If you pay by paypal or credit card, it will come out at the time of order. Bank transfer it's up to you.

      • Thanks for the reply.

Do you have Linux as an option on this laptop or any other laptops ?

        • +2

Yes we can install Ubuntu on this model and others too, free of charge. We haven't included it in the drop down at the moment as we haven't had the ability to make sure all compatibility is working. Although it should be. When the models arrive and if it's working we can install it for you.

    Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know my experiences with this laptop so far. I bought one very early on, had it for over a month now.

At first I just had the 1920x1080 screen but when the 3200x1800 screens were available I quickly jumped to get it upgraded.

Screen wise: STICK WITH 1920x1080! I pride myself on my eyesight and I don't use any of Windows 8.1 scaling, I leave everything on 100% magnification. It's legible BUT the screen technology used for the 3200x1800 resolution is utter crap. There is a pixelation effect on small text that makes them look like they're dots instead of solid lines.

Noise: it gets noisy when you play games. I run Diablo 3 on it and it's quite loud. Not the extreme but it is definitely noticeable. When not playing games, even CPU intensive activities, it is whisper quiet.

Overall it is a fantastic laptop. Powerful, fast, somewhat portable. It beats any ultrabook in terms of specs and barely loses out in terms of style and portability. Things you might want to consider also is that the touchpad is horrible. It's tiny and the capacitive gestures don't always register. Couple that with the gigantic resolution makes it barely useable. I prefer a mouse anyway so it doesn't bother me too much but for those who use the touchpad more, please keep this in mind and double if you plan on the screen upgrade.

The only thing I regret is that screen upgrade. Paid more money for less, now I'm saving up to get the screen back to 1080 or go with a Gigabyte P34G v2.

    • There is a pixelation effect on small text that makes them look like they're dots instead of solid lines.

Any chance you can take and post a hirez picture?

    • Agreed,

      I have this resolution on a 15" screen (3200x1900)

It's terrible, it would be fine if the scaling worked properly for all applications and delivered an otherwise seamless experience.

Unfortunately this is not yet the case (although windows 8.1 scaling is getting close)

  • +1

Couldn't load the LBO site for the last 15 minutes. From the IP range it looks like they have dedicated servers for their website. Not sure what's going on.

    • +1

Ozbargain effect I think. It's been restarted.

  • +3

No way is that graphics card going to handle gaming at that resolution. It's a 128-bit card, offering performance roughly equivalent to a desktop GTX 750 Ti. You need an 870M minimum, or better yet an 880M. Expect sub-30fps gameplay, at best (and that's with graphics settings turned down).

    • +1

I think the idea is that in gaming you can easily scale down to 1600x900 without sub-pixel issues like when you scale down from 1080P to 900P.

      • +1

I don't think anyone sane would think a mere GTX750 would do 4k resolution in 3d games.

        4k is only for desktops

you scale in down to HD or FHD for 3d games

  • For the price I would get a SP2 if the screen size is not an issue.

  • Ok its loading again now :S

  • This or gigabyte p34g v2?

    • gigabyte = no warranty

      • Not true - there are several Australian vendors selling it who have to provide a warranty by law.

        • compared to other notebook, gigabyte warranty is harder to claim

  • Yes, still considering this or p34g v2

  • Wish the 11.6" model was a bit lighter. Quite tempting at the current price.

Thanks OP for posting this, I was going to do it myself later. :)

First off, yes the display has been fixed. The quality of these panels is now A1 and we have been waiting and waiting and waiting for them to get this right. So no issues there, we also include a 90 day 100% pixel warranty on the panel.

Secondly, if you want to you can use that same voucher code for free shipping on any model on our site, it's valid till the end of June. We ship via DHL Priority. So once your machine is done, it's usually 1 business day most of Australia, 2 to NZ.

Yes we have a 15 business day build time, the machines ETA is June 27, so there is a chance you may not see one in your hand until mid July. Keep that in mind.

Oblig tax questions. If you are buying this for this financial year, as long as your order is placed and paid for by 30th June our site will auto generate you the invoice. So even if the goods are delivered in July your invoice will be for June.

    • On the tax side: I think, for some companies the deadline for Salary Sacrificing Laptop is by the end of April. (At least mine is). Be aware and ask your salary department before ou jump in.

  • What's the battery life like on this?

    • I'd conservatively say around 4 hours, could be a little longer if you have everything dimmed and not using wifi etc.

  • Bugger. If only this had a bigger screen. Great deal!

    • +1

The Free mSATA upgrade still applies to other models too. You may want to check out our 15.6" range of notebooks like the W650SJ, P150SM, W355SS for other options that may be more suitable.

      • Does it apply to previous orders that are still waiting to be completed? I don't care about losing out on having to pay for shipping but the mSata size upgrade would be nice.

        • +2

If we haven't already allocated you a 128GB plextor drive to your order we may be able to do it. It would be worth checking out. Just send us through an email and we can check your order.

        • Hi jack, I added a comment to my order asking if this was possible, awaiting a response, thanks.

  • Is there a dock (video, USB, power) that this can be used with?

  • As always , LBO ~ Suburb customer service, good machines and good solid prices +1 every time~ mines going strong

  • Heya Jack, I'm currently seriously considering in getting a W550SU-1. Either this, or a ThinkPad T440p (apples to oranges, i know, but I can save a lot with Clevo if I can live with some compromises). To make a final decision, I need to ask you some questions:

    1. What is the realistic battery life of W550SU-1, say for general web browsing with screen brightness at around 70%?

    2. Does i5-4330M throttle under full load (for around 5 mins) for this model?

    3. What RAM brand/model do you guys use for this laptop?

    4. What kind of LG IPS panel do you guys use for this model? Can I upgrade to one with better gamut?

    Thanks heaps in advance!

    • +1

      Sure.

      1. Maybe 5 1/2 hours I would say give or take.
      2. No the i5-4330m will be fine under full load under any condition.
      3. It depends, but usually it is Crucial (Micron) memory. 1600Mhz Low Voltage.
      4. This is the highest gamut 15.6" screen in IPS available, that will fit this model unfortunately. It is 72% Gamut.
      • Your service never cease to impress me. Have an upvote!!!

      • Finally decided to purchase W55SU-1 last night with an i7 upgrade.
The last straw was Lenovo's sudden price increase VS your consistently good & responsive customer service.
        Looking forward to it!

PS: You guys don't seem to have drivers section for this specific model. Where can I find them?

  • oh how i would love to build my own laptop.

do you assemble these locally? if so is it possible to just get it shipped in bits so i can build it?

    • Yes we assemble these in our Sunshine Coast office. Sorry we must assemble the unit for you.

  • I've got a W230SS w/ the 1080p screen.

Things are already very small, I won't even try to imagine 1800p.

  • Can I assemble it myself?

    • No sorry we must assemble it for you.

      • +1

But you can take it apart and put it back together again after it arrives ;)

  • Is there a matte display option for this model?

    • Sorry we are only getting this model with a glossy QHD+ panel.

  • +1

I purchased this model from affordable laptops a few weeks ago before I went overseas. Including GST my model was $1399 and the specs were:

4700MQ instead of 4710mq listed here, so 100mhz faster than mine.
1080p screen - I got this on purpose, knowing hiDPI support in Windows is crap compared to OSX. Also bad reviews about the 3K panel. I am happy with my choice, 1080p is even too small for most things, and many applications still look crap as you can see from the link below:

    us.hardware.info/reviews/5178/8/hidpi-test-high-resolution-windows-a-complete-nightmare-conclusion

This one says rubber palmrest - mine is not rubber….
There is a promotion with affordable laptops still ongoing of a Plextor M5S 256GB and 1 year extra warranty, so I have a 2 year warranty vs only one year for this one, if I am not mistaken.
I had to pay for shipping, this is free shipping.

So this is a good deal if you specifically want the higher resolution screen - if they dropped the price and had the 1080p screen it would be a fantastic deal.

BTW, I also bought 2x M5M 256GB mSATA drives from MSY for $170 each inc. gst and it was simple to install, and now I have 768GB of solid state storage, big improvement over my Macbook Air 128GB, and necessary once you start installing games.

  • Is the QHD+ panel the same one as used in the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus? If so, it may be able to be improved with software
    http://www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/Samsung-ATIV-Book-…
Can't wait till I get my hands on mine :D

  • I'm 99% sure I'll order one.

@Rep, is it possible to order this by Wednesday and receive the invoice for this FY, then the delivery can be delayed up to end of August?
Late delivery is OK with me as I'll be out of the country during that time anyway. If it is to be delivered earlier, that's not a problem as I can have someone receive it for me. Main thing is to be able to claim it during this FY. Thanks.

    • Yes. That is no problem as long as the order is paid for, you will automatically get generated a tax invoice and that will be for the 'Paid for' date.

  • Does anyone know if the additional 3 Year RTB Warranty + 90 Day 100% Pixel Guarantee is worth it? It is an extra $99 but this could be a worthy investment in the future.

Or put simply, has anyone had any problems with their Clevo after expiration of 1 year warranty?

    • +1

I added it to my order, doesnt seem to much to pay for peace of mind.

      • I agree and I ordered it too. I figure that the extra $99 will give me extra 2 years peace of mind.

For some reason it did not accept my Visa card, so I had to pay using Paypal.

@Rep, you need to change your billing software so that it takes the person's name from the billing address and not from the delivery address. The billing person is me but I nominate a different person for the delivery address in case I am not there to receive it. This is just a small change to your process that I think will be appreciated by all customers. Thanks

  • One more thing Rep. Does it have 1x8GB RAM stick or 2x4GB RAM stick?
I would like to know for future upgrade possibility of adding another 8GB RAM stick. Thanks.

    • +2

      IIRC, it is 1X 8GB

      • +1

        Thanks for clarifying.

      • Yes correct 1x 8GB.

  • Hey Jackkel, just wondering what sort of products I can use to clean the horize screen machines? I got the matte display one and wanted to use some screen cleaner~ Just didnt want to damage it.

    Kind regards,

    Calmer
