  • Good price but are they decent size?

    • just bought 3 and they are pretty decent.

Are these loose? If not, the Woolies pre-packs of 3 - used to be (Grrr…) 4 - tend to be slightly smaller than the loose ones available at the same time, but usually not by much. Otherwise, fine, more often than not and actually quite often better than the loose ones on offer.

The Shepard season (my favourite variety) is pretty much done for the year, sadly.

For $1 each size doesn't really matter!

Aldi have a kilo for $5,get about 6-7 and they are usually all perfect if you let them ripen up at home

what's the excuse there if you get caught. there's no excuse. you'd get fined and arrested and banned from the store. not to mention the embarrassment.

  • Also available in the ACT.

    Just get one from Wollies.
How long does it take to become soft (very hard now), put them on fridge or room temperature?
I find myself transforming to be a OzBargainer now

put them next to ripening bananas at room temperature.
how long it takes can vary.
put them in the fridge if you don't want them ripening.

but make sure the fridge temp never drops to zero, or you'll get a lot of brown/purplish flesh. Pop them in the fridge too early in the ripening cycle and you'll find that when you bring them out to ripen you will have hard and soft parts to the fruit, generally soft under the skin and hard as rock and stuck to the stone in the centre. Getting it right can be a real art.

  • A few days ago they were 2 for $3.80 at Wolli Creek, but the quality was terrible so we didnt buy them. Maybe a another lot may be better.

  • How do I know whether they are ripe guys? How long should I wait?

Unless you're making guacamole, where it doesn't matter too much, too dark (sometimes dark even a bit), and too soft, is too ripe.

Avocadoes that just yield a bit (you'll learn over time just how much) when you squeeze, are still soft to eat, but retain a creaminess that disappears when they're too ripe. Shepard avocadoes exhibit this contrast in taste and texture the most.

Choosing avocadoes that are going to ripen without going rotten can sometimes feel like a weird cross between an art and a science. Both inexact.
Do definitely avoid any avocadoes that are too round or have (talking Haas ones here) any reddish colour on the skin. They are always pale inside and a little bitter-tasting under the skin.

We tend to buy unripe most of the time, so that we can control the ripening time a bit - depending on where we put them - and because there are ways that you can reduce the likelihood of them going rotten before they ripen completely. I mention one way with Shepards, in particular, here

The last batch of Woolies Haas we bought was last week. and all were bullet-hard. Most ripe after 5 days, a couple took a day longer. Shepards (for next season reference) can easily ripen from hard in half that time.

I hope some of that helps you.

You must have been an avocado farmer in your previous life :)

        Very informative - thank you!

    • Press softly on the top (the narrowest end) it should give slightly but should not feel solid or rubbery.

      • Worth mentioning, particularly while your choosing instore, is that if the stem end gives very easily compared to rest of the fruit - very high likelihood that its on the way to being rotten.
If stem end is soft and the rest of the fruit is very hard - definitely don't buy.

  • I lurve avoca smoothies….so good.

  • Went to Eastwood Woolies this morning and found that the avocados were actually quite small and were in a pre-packaged pack of 3. Not sure if it's the same at other woolies. Earlier this week, the Eastwood store had 2 large ones for $3.40 and it was a better deal.

    • Still very early in the Haas season - a lot of variation in batches off trees generally.
Up here in Qld - where the special isn't on - the size in the prepacks is pretty good already. Very slightly smaller than loose.

Further into the season - at Coles - the loose, large, organically grown Haas are (very) occasionally cheaper than the regularly grown ones. Always worth checking, just on the off-chance.
They are always amazing. The grower(s) that Coles buy from do a great job.

  • Sorry but $1 per avo doesn't ever look cheap to me, they were 3 for a dollar when on special only a decade ago. With more avocado growers than ever either the supermarkets are profiteering or the export markets are taking most of the crop, I can accept if it's the latter.

  • Copy cat Coles immediately has matched the price, but you can buy 1 or 100

    ALDI still @ $1.50/pc

    :-)
