Free Main Meal & a Drink at Pho 24. Melbourne CBD Thursday May 29 [VIC]

450

To celebrate the launch of PHO24 in Australia, the flagship Melbourne restaurant is having a free lunch day! Dine at PHO24 between 10am - 4pm on Thursday 29 May for a free main meal and drink.

Confirmed on their Facebook Page and on their website and their website graphic. Pho wants you to register but I don't think that's a requirement as nothing is mentioned on Yelp's webpage.

Address:

656 Little Bourke St
Melbourne Victoria 3000

The 22nd in Yelps description is a typo. Should be May 29. I've let them know about the error. They've fixed it.

  • This is for May 22nd - last Thursday!

    • Whoops, I meant May 29.

EDIT: I tweeted them and they fixed it up.

  • I had their Paprika Pork Banh Mi which is really yummy. Friend of mine also had their Fish Pho and said it was really good too.

Is this a spin-off from Pho 24 in VietNam ? If it is then pass

    • yeah, Pho24 in vietnam is crap…and from urbanspoon, it looks like this one is too!

Not good by Viet standards but probably pretty good by Australian CBD standards.

i very much doubt it would even be pretty good by Australian CBD standards (which is already very low)…

      • So what's the best pho in the CBD?

        • in Melbourne? probably Pho Dzung ("chicken and cow")…if i REALLY needed to have pho in the city, that's where i'd go. but, to be honest, i'd rather catch the tram to Victoria st, or just eat something else! :)

there is also a new I Love Pho outpost in Emporium (I Love Pho Express). i haven't tried it (i'm skeptical…and I Love Pho is not my favourite joint on Victoria st anyway). and another pho joint in Emporium called Pho Nom. i can't say i'm that excited to try either them, tbh…but i guess those are the only other two places i'd give a go.

I had the opposite experience in Vietnam. Good quality meat over there is pretty pricey and as a result I have had better pho in Melbourne than much of what I had over there.

      • yes the beef in australia is better, so the pieces of (sliced) beef are definitely generally better in (good) australian pho shops…but that doesn't necessarily translate to better pho.

i'm not 100% sure how much difference there is in the bones (used to make the stock) from better quality meat, and i'd wager that a great pho maker in vietnam who has spent their whole life (and probably generations before them) making pho has probably learnt how to make the most out of what they have. plus, the broth is more than just the beef bones in any case…the freshness of the other produce may also impact heavily.

and the best pho i've had in vietnam is from shops that are way way smaller than any in australia, and would have barely any shop costs (being holes in the wall or small stalls/shelters by the side of the road). hence i'd suggest they probably put more care into their pho than most australia pho restaurants.

i wouldn't say pho in australia vs pho in vietnam that either one was "better"…there is definitely great pho in both places (and i have never eaten them back to back to decide which i prefer). in any case, i have definitely had some amazing bowls of pho in vietnam (although, that might be influenced by other factors like being in Vietnam and getting the authentic experience on the side of the road!) :)

edit: to clarify, i'm not saying that bones from better cattle AREN'T better…i just think that the meat from better cattle probably makes a lot more difference (ie. that it would be easier to distinguish the difference in meat than in the bones).

Still pretty awful by Australian standards.
Turn up to just any place in Footscray or Richmond and its guaranteed to be better than Pho24.

"The first western-style quick service PHO24 restaurant! We’re breaking all the rules, with a fast, avant-garde, fresh & healthy twist on the classic Vietnamese pho meal. Bringing the undiscovered to the masses!"

Western Style and avant-garde twist should trigger alarm bells already.

      • My colleagues went the other day, and afterwards they told me not to go to this place ever.
Worst pho they've had in Melbourne(according to them). The soup base was brownish coloured and tasted bad, LOL.

  • I went to this place the day it opened. It is by far the worst Pho I have ever had. The soup is simply disgusting. In fact I wouldn't even call it pho, it has some strange chemical unnatural taste. There is also a gross smell outside the restaurant if you walk past.

I would give this deal a pass.

    • I think's that's just my mate's BO. He lives around there. Apologies for that.

  • is it really not worth eating for free?

    • I've eaten there before and will go back on Thursday for the free meal because it's free, but unless it is much better than last time I won't pay to eat there again.

  • Only 400 clicks in 4hours? I always thought CBD freebies within 4 hours were always from 3000-600 clicks? All asleep?

Hmm I guess this is their last gasp of air of staying afloat, since all these gourmet hipster Pho places starting to pop up everywhere especially the two in Emporium (neither impressive either, soup base taste like the beef stock in maggie noodles)

I used to love the Russell x Lonsdale street one until somehow now its different… so now I resort to Mekong, but then again I don't really have a hankering for Pho since then and only reserve myself to visit Huong Vong in Springvale for one of the best :)

  • defin huong vong is my fav in melb. if ever on hanoi i recommend going to pho thin….it all started from the north, no bean shoots and herbs.

  • I'll pass. Not worth the drive or myki money to get there.

  • Just occurred to me that it says grand opening 29th May. It's been around for quite some time already. I wonder if it sucked that much that it is now taken over by new management and cooks. Just a thought.

  • the appeal of street food is a cheap price, quality food and authenticity.

you can't replace that with high prices, a commercial factory product made with the cheapest ingredients to maximise profit and a "authentic" shop fit-out that was designed 6-months ago by a marketing committee and financed by a multi-national food and beverage conglomerate.

  • i'll just go for the drink

  • Do you need to purchase a drink before you get the free main meal? I think there is a catch?

    • It's a free main meal and free drink.

    Ah, nothing vegetarian. :(
(I know that's a downside to being vegetarian, just saying.)

    • probably an upside, in this case…;)

ps. speaking of vegetarian vietnamese food, the other day i had the vegetarian version of bun bo hue (bun bo hue chay, i think)…it was surprisingly excellent! (i would still prefer bun bo hue with the bo, tho!)

  • Just came back from the place and the Pho and roll were horrible :(. The beef wasn't even half cooked XD.

  • Went with my colleagues just now. The pho meh, the broth tasted like MSG and luke warm. Some of my colleagues had pork Banh Mi the pork was raw.

  • The only good thing was we each got free bottle of coke and I collected all their labels for my coke rewards :)

  • The portion is generous for a free pho. Taste wise, very different from all the phos I've tried over the years.
