It's credit specifically for the app store, so yes, Android purchases only.
The confirmation email I received said this…
"As a purchaser of select games from Amazon Digital Games you have earned a $5 credit valid towards games or applications from the Amazon Appstore for Android. "

Thanks for this, also using this I spotted other benefits with Amazon. I used this to knock $5 off San Andreas gaining 2000 coins then I downloaded the 5 free apps for another 1000 coins for a total of 3000 coins and a game I might play for $1.99.
what can the $5 use for? I tried to download batman for windows, but it still asked me for 5.41… hmmm

The credit seems useless unless the appstore is also somehow recognized as being in US region. Any purchase of apps that we make is automatically treated as region Australia. And there does not seem to be a way to change this behavour.
