This is a bit like asking if the water tastes better out of the kitchen tap, the bathroom tap or the garden tap.

    I can't tell the difference, tbh :P

Yea but would you prefer to drink the water out of the kitchen tap, toilet bowl, or garden hose?

      :P

What does that question even mean?

It may even depend on where you live (aldi isn't everywhere) plus suppliers are all over Australia for Woolies and Coles

    • I'd say there are plenty of variables that may influence the way milks taste or how long they last between different stores. Even between different locations of the same chain.

How the milk is transported, how it's stored, how long it takes them to shift the product into the fridges (is there any delay?), the fridges themselves in the store (you'd expect them to be checked and calibrated often but is that really the case?).

Milk is a staple in our household and I've tried practically every brand available (even some lactose free ones). I keep going back to the generic brands because I honestly don't notice any downsides to them in either taste or shelf life. I've kept generic brand milks from Aldi, Coles and Woolies several days past their use by and they're still been okay.

People will experience things differently though. Maybe some Coles, Woolies and Aldis out there routinely stock milk that has a shorter shelf life than the Use By indicates (for whatever reason - any of the above variables really).

I'm by no means an expert though lol. Just guessing what the possibilities might be.

I think the ONLY milk I've noticed a negative difference in was a 2L bottle of full cream milk from Caltex Woolworths. It wasn't off or anything. It's their own brand "Star" or whatever. It might have just been me, but it left an unpleasant sensation in the mouth. Kinda like.. phlegmy lol. As if there was a layer of fat stuck to my tongue.

But I've bought the same milk other times without the same experience.

Who knows what goes on. Maybe the cows have their off days lol.

  • It will be interesting to see the break down of cow milk vs soy and the like. I'm a soy convert (getting to a decade now).

my local coles store is really good at discounting milk and i buy a lot that is shorted dated. i have found the pauls stuff tends to last a bit longer afer the use by date than the shop brands.

    • =More preservatives?

      • Is that a serious question?

  • I really disliked the coles/woolies lite milk, gave me really bad flatulence and tasted diluted. I switched to Pauls whiter smart milk, which isn't that expensive compared to a2. Pauls is $1.99 for the 1 litre bottles in Sydney.

Then I realised I was lactose intolerant and switched to Pauls Zymril and Liddells. I prefer Liddells, cheap and good at only $1.50/l (on sale, UHT milk). Before lactose free milk, I was drinking soy milk. Felt like drowning myself when I had it with my morning earl grey.

I just get the $1/L woolworths or coles branded milk depending on where I am. Buying other brands doesn't make a difference to taste (in my opinion). All of the generic brands taste the same as the other generic brands, as well as all of the various "premium" brands of milk.

It's all from the same place anyway. There are only 2 major milk producers in Australia who have a massive duopoly (90% of the market) - they make milk for name brands and woolworths/coles.

Also I was interested to learn that it doesn't matter how much the milk costs - the farmers get the same amount for the milk produced, regardless of what brand is on the label.

    Source - worth a watch.

Edit: just noticed the other thread someone linked this video and said basically the same thing :)
