I can't imagine it would be very powerful if its not LED. You can get a better flashlight elsewhere.

  • Maglites are great. Couple them with this - http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id=28&prod… and you've got a powerful flashlight that is super durable. $20 is a good price. I'm gonna get me some if I can find it at the stores near me.

    • samfisher5986 is right. These would not be as bright as the Cree/SSC LED flashlights that you can find on dealextreme. And the Nite Ize LED attachment is a Luxeon LED, which is not as bright as the Cree ones. If I recall correctly, the maximum light output for Luxeons is about 40 lumens/watt whereas an entry level Cree LED has a minimum output of ~80 lumens/watt. Not to mention that the Nite Ize attachment is only 1W and is not as battery efficient as the Cree LEDs.

Furthermore for $20, there are many more superior flashlights that you can get at this price point that runs on AA batteries. The AA one that I personally have is this flashlight, been having it for over a year now, and is still by far the brightest flashlight I have that runs on AA batteries.

      • How can you possibly compare a genuine Mag to some junk from deal extreme? Its kind of like saying the Hyundai Sonata has more features and power than a C Class Benz…

Plus I like the fact the 3D Mag also doubles as a self defense tool, goodluck probing bad guys with the AA

        • A lot of Dealextreme products are high quality. If you buy $10 flashlights, they can often stop working if you drop them on cement. But I have purchased flashlights from there that are great quality, you just have to spend more. Of course people will think dealextreme products are low quality if all you buy is the cheap $5 products.

My Flashlight from DX has been thrown from a building (not my idea) to the cement ground and it still works fine. It is also brighter then anything i've seen purchased here besides a spotlight.

          So a Maglite has:
          Short battery life
          Low bulb brightness
          Poor choice of battery's

          A Cree/LED has
          Long battery life
          High bulb brightness
          Great choice of batteries

And dealextreme even has many water resistant flashlights, flashlights with different modes, flashlights you plug into the wall. I just can't see a reason anyone would want this maglite.

I often laugh when my tiny water resistant flashlight can beat their 9v big heavy dolphin torch.

          • @samfisher5986: A Cree/LED has a great choice of batteries? You really only want a Cree/LED that uses a 18650 for some decent runtime, and more constant output if your torch has a regulator. If it runs out while you're away from your charger, you're screwed, you can't pop into a servo to pick up some Ds. :)

That said, I can't use incandescent torches anymore. You can buy an LED drop-in for the maglite btw. Those D cells have plenty of energy. The runtime of the bright LED ones could be better. Also, nearly all LED torches cannot be focused, only a few can. I can't use nearly all the Crees as they have a very spotty beam pattern. It's the SSC and Surefire L4 for me.

            • @eug: I meant that you actually have a choice, i personally use 18650 for my regular flashlight, but a lot of the other kinds work well too. My point was that this maglight and its batteries aren't a very good choice. And chargers are very cheap, you can even set it up for your car, or why not just buy many batteries because its cheap?

I can't think of a need to go into the shop and get emergency AA or D cells.

              • @samfisher5986: I think Maglites aren't a good choice either - if you're a bit techy. For 'everyday' people who don't know or care what a Luxeon or Cree or Q bin or protected 18650 is, a Maglite might actually be a better purchase in the long run. I can't imagine telling my mom that she can't keep her 18650 SSC P7 in the glovebox as heat will damage the battery, and if she needs a spare battery, simply logon to dealextreme and look for an 18650 but read the reviews first to see if a Trustfire is better than an Ultrafire, or generic blue one. Then pay with her Paypal account.

Going camping? No.. you can't hop in to Coles to buy a bunch of D batts… Need a batt quick? Mmm no, not even Jaycar sells them. :)

CR123A primary cells are the best for in-car emergency use as they last a very long time and don't get damaged by heat as easily as li-ion batts. Unfortunately, the cheap Crees aren't bright at all at 3V, and you don't get much runtime if you stick them into a multiple-emitter torch like the Romisen RC-T5.

So.. for us techy people, 1970s technology like Maglites are crap… but for the average joe, IMHO, maglites are lower-maintenance, at least for now.

                Now, who's up for a 10-watt Ostar 2D Maglite mod? :D

  • From the comments made for the Cree/SSC Led flashlight it is clear that whilst it is bright the quality of construction is not that of a Maglite.

    • I've had a small number of torches, the best from dx so far is a $45 SSC, which definitely isn't as tough as a maglite. Off-centre emitters, poor electrical contacts, poor heatsinking… it's the luck of the draw, really. And those 5 modes are annoying. ;)

I've got a 4D maglite that's 16 years old which still works. The Surefire L1 and L4 beats the maglite though. I've never had a contact problem, and the HA-III coating is really tough.

  • went to Noarlunga Kmart (SA) they were all sold out, but it looks as though the special is Australia wide if you want to look.
