Free Rubbish Tip Disposal (with eWaste) - Brisbane and Possible Other Cities/States

580

Took a full trailer load of old wood to the Chandler transfer station today in Brisbane, and also had an old monitor at the top which i planned just to dump in the e-waste bin.

Upon arriving at the exit, the guy waved me through because i had disposed of e-waste and that made my entire trailer load free. I asked him about it and he said it was some federal government incentive to recycle e-waste and didn't know how long it was going to go for.

All he said that they need to do is sight some e-waste on your trailer as you come in, then they have to instruct you to dispose of it in the correct bin, and everything in your load is free.

Hope this qualifies as a good deal, it's not something i knew about and may come in handy for some OZB's

most council's give vouchers to ratepayers

        mine doesn't

      • +2

        most

        ??? I don't think so

      • +4

Brisbane City Council does give vouchers out, I think it is two or three "green waste" and two or three "general waste" vouchers per year. They come with one of the four rates bills each year.

But if you are a renter, you won't receive any vouchers, because the rates bills (and the vouchers) will be sent to the property owner.

trailer load of old wood…. sounds to me like you just disposed some good $$$. Winter time means people are buying fire wood…. You should have listed on ebay and people would have paid you to pick this stuff up!

    • +1

I don't see anywhere in his post where he mentions that it's not treated, painted etc?

      • Yeah it was old treated timber from a retaining wall that was rotted and fallen apart

        • -5

if its rotten and falling apart its fine to use for firewood! the treatment will have been washed away by that time.

        • -1

Well excuse him Mr Wood expert.

        • -1

I've a good a wood just reading this post

        • +5

Might be time to get it treated then lol

  • +12

mmmm fire wood in queensland is not a big seller

    • espeically not when you can get a lot of it free if you drive 20mins somewhere.

  • I've always put the e-waste in the boot separate from the trailer load. So I must try this other method next time.

  • thanks

  • Has anyone done this at a SITA waste transfer station?

  • Yeah this is a genuine good bargain - I only dump my e-waste one at a time to maximise free trips of regular waste to any of the BCC transfer stations:

    1402 Nudgee Road, Nudgee 6.30am to 5.45pm
    360 Sherbrooke Road, Willawong 6.30am to 5.45pm
101 Upper Kedron Road, Ferny Grove 6.30am to 5.45pm
    728 Tilley Road, Chandler 6.30am to 5.45pm

  • That's weird, they don't accept alarm clocks for some reason…?

    • some smoke alarms contain radioactive parts to detect smoke

they don't accept alarm clocks for some reason…?

        ….

some smoke alarms contain radioactive parts to detect smoke

        What

        • +1

There is more radioactive material in a bucket of soil from your garden than in a smoke detector. The first point is somewhat alarming though.

  • If it's working e-waste you could try freecycling it first.

    • +7

How does that give us a free trailer load at the tip?

What you could have said was, if you re out of e-waste, try freecycle to get some free e-waste to put on top of your trailer.

      • BCC already gives free tip vouchers plus kerb side cleanup. This post was about my local tip & may not apply elsewhere anyway.

Was just a suggestion to pass on working equipment to others. I've got plenty of good equipment from Freecycle. Better to reuse, rather than recycle or go to landfill.

      • How does this deal give us a free trailer load at the tip? Just a lucky day on 1 dump trip (of recyclables) to 1 tip a long way from you. Not a deal unless it is a confirmed policy & I doubt that. More likely laid back staff.

  • I get 4 free visits in a year, with no specific limit on weight or how much. I load the trailer and the ute to capacity to get my monies worth. It should be included in your rates!

    • We get 12 free curb side pickups a year (average trailer load) but they won't take certain items like car parts and building materials, so they need to go to the tip, apparently with a TV on top of them :)

  • um ,.. this is topical!…. I have a faulty boxed vacuum cleaner (Kogan … dont ask) and need to get rid of it, (live in Western Sydney, NSW)

I see a lot of people leaving stuff by the front of my block of flats that seems to be picked up by council etc … usually just old furniture/matresses

Can I do the same with my one small vacuum cleaner box? I dont think I can cause that could be considered fly tipping no? I also have a small trolley bag that needs to be discarded. Not sure what to do. Live in Western Sydney, NSW, What would normal process be?

    • What council area?

      • Riverwood - think thats Hurstville council?

    • You could always put it up for free on gumtree and state you will leave it out on the curb or in your front yard.

I've had people pick up crap like broken chairs, very dead lawn mowers etc… One mans trash is another mans treasure ;)

  • SA has been doing this for a while. Can't comment on funding but for SA locations:

This seems weird… e-waste has been free to tip for years, but using e-waste as a sort of 'voucher' to tip other stuff for free? Is this policy/offer written anywhere on any website (I note that it's not mentioned on any of the links posted above)? If anyone knows of any tip in Victoria (within about 30 kays of the CBD) that does this, I'd love to know about it… currently I pay a minimum of $50 a trailor-load, and I have lots of e-waste I could use as vouchers…

    • I know the Willawong depot mentioned above, now has it's recycling area off to the side so the weighbridge can be bypassed, but I think sometimes they may still need to be weighed afterwards if regular rubbish is also to be unloaded. Might still cost a voucher.

      • Where's Willawong? I thought that was a chocolate factory.

        • Only if you want your chocolates filled with industrial waste! It's Brisbane's main toxic waste site.

  • I think e-waste is only allowed, its upto the person at the tip to allow you to dump everything else for free.

  • Guys, how are we supposed to dispose of batteries?

    • +1

Aldi takes them if you have one close by.

      • Aldi takes old batteries? I'm learning a lot from this post! Why would Aldi take them? Just a community service? YAY for Aldi!

    • SA link - http://www.zerowaste.sa.gov.au/your-questions/where-can-i-re…

'Battery World stores throughout South Australia take most batteries, phone 13 17 60.
Recycle My Battery shows locations around Australia for lead acid batteries (the kind used in cars, motorcycles and boats).
Mobile phone batteries - check out Mobile Muster for your nearest drop off point.
You can also view our list of recycling locations.'

Your local Govt should have an online list available for you to see local recycling facilities.

  • Used to cost me a fortune going to the tip when I lived in Vic (Mornington Peninsula). Now I live in Toowoomba and tip is free all day every day.

  • Yep, that's why any otherwise decent bit of parkland in Melbourne is loaded with old fly-tipped rubbish (often entire trailer-loads), it's all through the local waterways, and even everywhere in the suburbs on the side of the road… vacant lots become tips overnight etc.; because it actually costs a heap just to take one small trailer-load of rubbish to the tip.
Lotsa' peeps burn it too instead, as a (not very green) alternative to paying. It's technically not illegal, as long as they throw a sausage on to cook, "once the fire dies down a bit" (i.e., after burning for a few hours)… it's a barbeque!

  • +1

How to avoid paying tipping fee… How is this a Deal?

This sounds like it was a lucky day at 1 Brissie tip, only with recyclables (timber & ewaste) & may not apply at other Brissie tips, with other loads, let alone other places.

More in the realm of a pricing error. I've had many free rides on Brisbane buses when the reader malfunctioned or the driver waived me on for free - but certainly not worthy of posting as a deal as it may not apply to anyone else.

Unless someone can quote a stated policy, it is probably up to luck getting certain staff on the day, depending on your load.

Ewaste may be disposed of free under Federal policy, but not the rest. Can't see Canberra paying the compensation bill which councils would charge them for free dumping of ordinary waste. Besides, Federal programs would want documentation of type & quantity of waste dumped.

Too many unknowns for a Deal!
Can't see feedback that it works anywhere else.

    So hardly a deal.
    Possibly a forum post.

  • I was at the Willawong Tip, Brisbane a few weeks ago and the same thing happenned to me. I had a big old TV on the top of of heap of old, ruined furniture, and other random rubbish.

Because of the TV it was free…

It would be good if they actually had a stated policy on the website.
