  • All things considered, a good cheap option with very reasonable reviews. Yes, HD is better, but for $17.96 I've bought one.

    Thanks OP.

    • Cheers

  • Is there every chance that when the inside of your car gets to about 60C in the summer time, this item will die??

    • +1

I've got a unit similiar to this that's been on my windshield for about a year by now (through a scorching summer; left parked in full sunlight for the entire working day for months on end) and it hasn't missed a beat.

Really, all of these sub-$50 dashcams are as near as makes no difference in quality, so I should imagine this will hold up well.

The only problem I've had, is that occasionally (every 2 months or so) the dashcam suction cup will lose suction to the point of falling off the windshield; sometimes I've opened my car in the morning to find it on the floor.

It reattaches securely without issue but I'm worried all these falls are going to break it eventually. Not that it's very dear to me as it cost about $30.

      • +1

I had the same problem re it falling off occasionally, I ended up using silicon and gluing the suction cap to the window. It hasn't fallen off since, and will be easy enough to remove if I ever want to.

        • Silicon as in some Selley's Silicone caulk? Might give that a shot, but I actually like being to reposition the dashcam though.

      • +1

If you tie the unit to your rear-vision mirror, perhaps with a bit of elastic cord, then it won't reach the floor. Hopefully it will just dangle below the mirror, and the camera won't strike anything.

For the suction cap problem, I've heard that wetting the suction cup with soapy water (not soft soap) can help. As the water gradually evaporates, the soap acts like a glue. However, use too much soap, and it'll probably slide down the windscreen.

        • That soapy waters a good idea, back in my bmx days i used to put hairspray in the handlebar grips so they wouldn't come off, worked like a charm! Maybe it'd work for these as well?
*Dunno if it'd damage the cup overtime though.

    I have one,
In the 60c heat the unit still works but the suction cup warped.
I adapted a kogan mobile mount that had broken phone holder and it is still working.

  • looking at the video review, it seems useless for license plates. Would be handy for sorting out liability when all parties remain at the scene, but not if the other person drives off. But I guess for the price you can't expect much more!

    • +3

Dashcams are virtually useless for that purpose, even the higher-end ones with GoPro-worthy CMOS sensors. The only time you'll pick out licence plates is when everything is perfectly still. The compression algorithms are just rubbish (mainly because the CPUs are so weak) and recording in uncompressed video output would require a 4TB external hard drive that'd need emptying each day. The well-known "Jello effect" (the rolling shutter) also compounds the problem of visibility of licence plates as wells.

    it's just a cheap knock-off of the real DVR-027, of which i have 2. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310585954574

i bought a cheap version that 1day.com.au were flogging. although they look similar, the product and video quality is rubbish.

btw, my two dashcams have held up superbly through 2 perth summers. and the best part is they can use nokia bl-5c batteries which means i can run them on battery power alone for about 3 hours.

    • care to share the video quality of DVR-027?
      Thanks

1280x720p, daylight, both vehicles stationary: http://s27.postimg.org/vahwcqh9v/736398_552582261437798_2214…

i normally run it at 640x480 since reviewing the video at higher res is too hard on my computer :p
night shot, exposure -0.7, both cars stationary: http://postimg.org/image/5fu0eyfrv/

sorry, no moving pictures for now since it takes a while to upload :)

          Thanks

          Heh.. that licence plate. GG.

Anyways those are pretty clear shots.

        • can't really go wrong picking up plates within a few metres when you're sitting still, like Amar89 said a few comments up.

when you're on the move, plates are harder to catch…you rely on luck you'll catch the right amount of light at just the right angle. at night, it's impossible unless you're right behind and you've adjusted the exposure properly for night driving (i've found -0.7 to be best but it darkens everything else) and the plate isn't tilted at an angle.

oh, and the IR lights are useless except for spotting moths that land on your windscreen.

    • Didn't think the IR lights would of done much considering it is behind a windscreen… I would think there would be some issues trying to get through the windscreen in the first place.

      • my dashcam picks up the IR lights from those mobile speed camera vans. so IR can definitely penetrate a windscreen, it's just down to the strength of the IR emitters, which on these dashcams are very weak

Guys I have this, camera is good. Practicality is a disaster the suction cap just does not work. It abruptly falls down, many times while I am driving or when I open my car in the morning. Now it's just sitting in my glove box because it just pissed me off so much. Now I am angry again.

    • +1

Yeah… "Full HD" @ 25FPS only. 720P @ 30FPS. You get what you pay for.

It all depends on your motivation for having a dashcam. Potential evidence in determining fault in head-on/side-on/pedestrian/cyclist collisions? It may suffice but the 90 degree viewing angle is a bit restrictive.

You can forget about seeing things at night realistically.

      • For something to play with the cheaper one may be better.

Currently I am playing with Autoboy on my phone but keep stopping by itself.

    • The K6000 is reviewed here: http://dashcamtalk.com/

The G1W (mentioned below) is also listed, and as stated below is one of the best in that price bracket.

  • G1W seems to have good review for $35 from Hong Kong.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HD-1080P-G1W-2-7-LCD-Car-DVR-Came…

    • be careful of the fake ones

  • go for the G1W or better the mobius action cam. read the detail on dashcam forum. amazing detail on the best value system -> Mobius Action Cam

  • Not a fan of banggood. Had heaps of niggly things happen with them. Nothing terrible just issues. Eg deliveries not arriving. Online help not being umm helpful.

    Free shipping?
It say it on the product page, but once you add it to the cart it says it's $1.60 for shipping.

    Anyone else notice this?

    • Yes, me too. Had a chat with CS but they're useless, couldn't solve a thing.

      • Me too, they didn't answer my question.

  • I think they may have increased the price.

    • Not really because the product page still said "Free shipping to Australia via Standard Shipping".

But after added to cart it was not free.

      • Yes, you are correct. Let me edit my listing again.

        • emailed their CS, report via their web page. Still nobody care about the error.

        • fixed now.

  • $15.84 delivered on ebay looks like same model

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-5-HD-Car-Vehicle-Dash-Dashboard…
