  • Hardly see any WD portables in stores these days. Might pick one up although I don't need it.

Anyone know why stores are stocking less and less of the WD drives?

    • have heard that the new WD portables have louder harddrives then last year's model least that is what i am reading from reviews compared to new Toshiba portables

      • I've got one of the old ones and it's whisper quite. If it was four times as loud I doubt that I would be able to hear it over the device that it's connected to.

WD 1.5TB password for $98 at Harvey Norman

    • I know for most the physical size difference doesn't matter, but the one listed in this post is the Ultra portable- it's smaller on all dimensions.

What's that useful for? I can easily slip one (I have the Toshiba Canvio slim) into the laptop sleeve with my ultrabook, whilst I can't do the same with my bulkier HDs.

Granted, it's a fairly niche target audience but for some the ultra-slimmness is an important factor

  • Officeworks Pricebeat?

  • If this sucker has WD smart wave, avoid it like the plague.

      Care to elaborate?

      • It's bundled crapware mainly found on the WD My Book/My Book Live range that's difficult to remove and always launches the moment you plug the drive in (it constantly monitors file activity and makes real-time backups).

The newer My Passports do have it, but it doesn't have an autorun executable/self-mounting VHD that launches on connection and I just formatted both of mine without issue after I bought them.

        It shouldn't be a problem.

Difficult to remove even after formatting or deleting and recreating the partition?

        • I don't have any first-hand experience with the WD SmartWare that comes on the My Books, but apparently particular models had SmartWare firmware-embedded onto the logic board inside the enclosure, so there was no way to remove it without taking the HDD out of the enclosure and using it as a bare bones internal drive.

I remember hearing about that some years ago though, I'm not sure if WD is still doing that.

        • Like I said, this shouldn't be an issue for the My Passports, of which I have two, and all I needed to do was format them.

  • Compared to the My Passport is it just extra software and thinner?

    • Yeah I'm more interested in speed differences, if any.

  • any idea on a price match?
