Recommend a smart phone

Hi all,

I am planning to buy a smart phone for cousin but i am not sure as to which brand to buy.

My cousin has no preferences in terms of brand or model and i want to buy something cheap yet reliable.

Can you please suggest some brands that you think fit the bill

Motorola Moto G ($238) - good low-mid range dual-SIM phone, great build quality and fast processor but disappointing camera (consider price though.)

LG Nexus 5 ($420 incl shipping) - high-end flagship from Google, arguably the best value smartphone you can buy. Camera isn't the best though.

  • Don't forget the Nokia Lumia series. If the person you're buying for is a smartphone beginner, Windows Phone makes a good start.

The new Nokia 630 is about to hit stores fairly soon. see http://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/News/Nokia-Lumia-6…

There's also the Huawei Ascend Mate phablet at JB Hifi for $320

china phone. plenty decent phones for over $100 delivered (also plenty more crappy ones for that amount as well).

I recommend this one Ipegtop Z26- US $113.86 delivered.

I bought one for my wife. camera is really good - quick. screen - clear + responsive. calls are clear, etc. can't really fault it at all. nice specs. etc etc.

also she has dropped it a few times and the screen hasn't smashed.

    • Tempted.
      You didn't get the Samsung S5 US$166 + $26 P&H ?

That's what my wife would want…

    • Hi, how do I know is 4g phone pls?

      • GSM arena. Phone Arena. Google.

And none of the China-brand mobile are 4G, you can be pretty sure that if you're buying a cheapie off-brand there is no LTE support.

  • Nexus 5

  • Well, here's a new contender. There's a Moto G coming up, it sells for $129 in the USA. Specs are fairly humble, Snapdragon 200 dual core, a 4.3 inch display @ 960 x 540, 4GB of flash memory, water resistant and 5 mpx shooter.

    • No 4g,

But you can't really complain for the price,

I don't really get it, why aren't all new low-ish end phones using 4g?

All i want is a reliable android phone, with a good battery, an expandable micro-sd slot, and 4g,

I guess maybe it's too expensive too put a 4g chip in there, but phone manufacturers should really be thinking ahead, in terms of what consumers want in there phones.

The low end phones are targetted to markets that aren't willing to spend so much on a flagship phone, and typically those countries do not have 4G services at all.
