Countertop Transformation Kit $195 Bunnings

370

I have just bought a 30 year old home with the original kitchen bench which stains even if you look at it strangely. I am a dedicated Ozbargainer who does not like the idea of paying lots of money to someone to replace my kitchen when the actual benches are not falling apart, merely the top few mm. These units are quite handy and can replace old kitchen tops.

Amazon U.S have them at around 230 US dollar BEFORE delivery.

Various Australian dealers sell them at ~ $350

if price checking make sure it is for the 50 sq foot box

  • Is this their everyday price or a special price?

    • For that price it would want to be good! I worry that painting a laminate benchtop would be prone to scratches. ie a nice way to tart up a house before you sell it but not very good long term.

I found this very similar product at Masters. It doesnt come with the speckle effect but its one tenth of the price!!! Has anyone tried this? Does it work? Is it durable?

      • That is cheap! But it looks like a single coat, so will not look nearly the same as the OPs multi-layer product.

        • Agree with manic, also Masters has some of these larger kits aswell, normally retail $215. So could price match at Masters and get an extra 10% off.

    • everyday price.. it's been this price for ages now…

  • Messy job?

    • +3

probably, yet less messy than tearing the benches out to replace with new ones.

if this link comes up right it should show the price as yellow, which i think is their special logo

    • +1

The yellow tag doesn't represent the special price, it's more of a value for money highlight…

    • +17

It may be their normal price, but that doesn't mean it isn't a bargain if everyone else charges more.

I shouldn't be surprised at your neg vote though given you have never bothered to post a deal yourself Billy in over 3 years as an OzB member…

I'd be interested to hear the end result after using this

      • Thanks greatwhite, I will send you a pm with the before and after when i have finished.

        • +1

Please let me know too. I'm looking to redo my parents kitchen and have been looking for a bench for a while at a budget price. This may be the answer. Thanks heaps

        • +1

i'm interested at the before and after photos… i was actually looking at this product before but never actually going ahead with it… if the finish product is good i might get one too…

        • +1

I'd love to see before and afters too. Looking at doing something with the hideous 80's grey laminex benchtops at my place.

        • the first coat seems a bit troublesome, and the setting time up to 1 week! but the result is gorgeous

        • +1

Please let me know too as I have a 30+ year old home and want to give it a facelift as cheap as possible! Thanks

        • Me too. Please post photos :)

        • Interested to see as well :)

        • Me too please

        • Looking great. Do you need to remove the sink and stove first?

      • +4

I wasn't aware that there was a requirement to post bargains greatwhite… Oh wait, there isn't. Perhaps, like many of us, he sees the type of posts people like you make and chooses not to paint a target on his back.

        • +2

I wasn't aware greatwhite said there was a requirement… Oh wait, he didn't. Perhaps, like many of us who post deals (don't worry, you woudn't understand) he's sick of all the complaining from those who contribute so little.

My last deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143695 demotovated me quite a bit from posting after the complaints.

        • +3

Can you elaborate, I am trying to understand the 'people like you' reference directed at greatwhite, I have reviewed their comment history a bit but not found as pattern. can you direct me to what you are referring to as the comment here doesn't seem to be sledging the OP.

I do however agree with sledging the armchair critics. Worst thing about this site and Oz in general.

        • I'm pretty sure out of every comment I've ever posted on this site - this is probably the ONLY one I said it wasn't a deal, because it isn't.

If people want to take my initial comment as a sledge, then so be it. That just shows how cynical some of you really are and how much you read into things.

        • stating a fact isn't 'complaining'.

This is the everyday normal price at Bunnings, it's been this price since the product was launched. Again I'll say it - no deal.

It may be a good product, I've used it myself twice but never thought to post it as it's not a deal in any way shape or form. Good value = possibly, but not a deal.

I could post a new deal today - You can buy 60c stamps at the post office for the GREAT PRICE of only 60 cents !!!

      • I've used it several times in various renos but again - it's not a deal if this is the normal price at Bunnings everyday of the year

    • ha ! 14 minus votes for stating the truth - good on ya ozbargainers !

Found a cheaper one for $160. Not sure of the difference between them.

    • +5

The difference is Black & White…

  • I love to know if this works and is not just paint….

    • There are a few kg of "stone" flakes/chips which I am to apply between the coats. I am crossing my fingers for my budget renovation.

  • Great idea! Now I need someone to suggest an idea to update the cabinets and we got a new kitchen.

Tara Dennis on Better Homes & Gardens did a makeover using the product. You can see the video here :

    • Also saw it used recently on one of the reno show with Cherie Barbar.

You do realise that show is nothing but paid infomercials? They will not be honest.

plus the job's done by pro's to produce the best finished product.

Everyday price = no bargain! Shouldn't this be in forums?

    • +1

      I agree and + you..

but then again, at least this posting may have saved someone some bucks.
A lot of good ideas/finds probably get lost in the forums.
It's easy enough just to ignore ones like this that sit in a grey area (at current rates).

    • +1

Well I said exactly the same thing as you just up above and got 14- points, you somehow got 7+

Good job to you sir !

We used this product to do over some kitchen benches and I did a strip of the wall tiles as well.
The hardest part was getting a streak free clear/top coat, we actually had to sand it back and re do it. Otherwise really happy with it.
We did ours over a year ago.

    • whoa! good job sir, bit un even on the finish (sorry for the critics)

    • thanks for the wall tile idea!

  • +1

We bought this a couple of weeks ago at Bunnings for that price. $195 is the normal price.

It worked great. We are extremely happy with the results. You just need make sure you follow the instructions carefully.

    • Looks great gagootzz, great idea with the tile strip. Did you flack that too?

  • +4

For a lot of people it would be easier, and even cheaper, to replace the benchtop.
They are only held in by a few screws and some silicone.
Unless the kitchen has been tiled in such a way as to seal in the benchtop.
But then, if the benchtop is in bad condition, you probably want to replace those 70's tiles anyway.

A new Pragel benchtop is $80 for 2.5m from Ikea (or $155 in WA/SA, the bastards!) , so $160 for a typical kitchen.
Use the old removed pieces as a template to cut the new ones - jigsaw holes for cooktop and sink.
The only hard part is joining the pieces at a corner.

    • +1

For a lot of people it would be easier, and even cheaper, to replace the benchtop

i agree. After seeing the amount of work involved in meshe1969 post above, I cannot believe anybody would bother with such a "kit". It would be infinitely easier (and look better, AND be tons more durable as well) to just install a new top.

      • +1

Did you really mean to say infinitely?

That is nearly as much as ludicrous speed

    • +1

MOST kitchen walls will be tiles ON TOP of the benchtop though, making it an absolute pain in the butt to remove the benchtop.

I suspect that your idea of 'easier' might differ a bit from that of some. While most people are happy enough to pick up a paint roller, the thought of removing and reattaching benchtops and having to mess with cutting out for stove and sink etc, along with possibly calling in an electrician and a plumber might be a bit daunting for many. Incidentally, the $35 you claim to be saving on 2 bench tops just got swallowed up by paying the electrician. lol

      • +1

tiles ON TOP of the benchtop though

If it was done properly, there is silicone filling a small gap, which can be cut, and the bench pulled out, after removing screws from underneath.
If it was grouted, you remove the grout with a simple cheap tool, e.g. those $29 Bunnings multitools. Otherwise, yes you will break tiles when pulling the bench out.

I can understand some timid people being afraid to unscrew and reconnect the plumbing, but would those people be doing a DIY resurfacing either?
And why would you need an electrician? There is no wiring in a benchtop.

I'm not suggesting this to save money. The idea is to get a better result with less fuss - (potentially! depending on your kitchen.)
A new melamine laminate benchtop is much tougher, so will last a lot longer than a patch-up job.

        • Some people are a lot more comfortable painting i guess.

Having said that. I bought into the marketing for tile painting in the kitchen. I wasn't happy with the results at all and ended up re-tiling. Once the tiles were removed (2 day job living in a sweaty plastic bubble with a small jackhammer, the tiles came off as powder. No DIY videos showed how hard that part could be!) it was actually a lot easier than I thought.

        • +1

And why would you need an electrician? There is no wiring in a benchtop.

If there's a cooktop built into the benchtop there is.

        • Good point - I'm on gas :)
But you do not need to disconnect the power, even if the cooktop is hardwired.
Just turn off at the fuse-bix, remove the clamps, lift it up, turn, and lower back down through the hole into the cupboard.
It can stay there, still wired in, while you change the benchtop.

    • We looked at that option. Wasn't cheaper and it was actually a lot more fiddlier!

  • We are looking at replacing just the melamine / laminate cabinet doors with the modern looking "vacuum formed" doors. Anyone has done it this way ? I am surprised to see in the video that this product works on laminates.

    • +1

Are they standard sizes? best to post some photos on renovateforum.com and ask there.

    • If your actual cabinets are in reasonable condition, and you're happy with the layout, there's no real reason NOT to do what you're proposing. You'll save heaps of money compared with buying and messing around with whole new cabinets.

Incidentally, there are quite a few ways of painting on laminate, and not all cost an arm and a leg. A bottle of Penetrol costs about $16 and enables you to paint on anything including glass and plastics. I've also read that you can paint laminate by using oil based paint for a base coat, then just whatever waterbased paint you have chosen on top of that.

To those who want to see before and after photos work a brutally honest cost list; I will make a forum entry which will be completed by the weekend.
