Thanks . sent a couple of texts and this is reliable

  • +1

It works but only problem is that you can't receive their replies unless they text to you from their computer to your mobile

    • you can put "Sender ID:countrycode + your Mobile Number" and yr frd can send you back.

you can use the browser on your mobile with little data cost

When sending to an Australian number, that option disappears, showing sender as +61437376261 Tried a few times to check speed etc. But could include number in txt.

  • +19

Will they start spamming the numbers though ???

  • Not working for me. Must be getting ozbargained.

    • +3

I found it works with IE, but not with Chrome…

      • +2

Thanks JV. Will try with IE but just wondering what's the advantage of using this service over say viber?

        • +5

if the sender or receiver dont have smartphone

      • +1

Correction - works fine with Chrome here.

      • interesting i stopped using this months ago because my messages appear to be no longer sent.

Appears to be working again. For IE at-least.

awesome……but I use a smartphone, so i use other apps to do this now.

    • Which other apps?

      • +2

Any text messaging app? Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, FB Messenger even.

        • +2

Aren't those basically instant messaging apps, not exactly sms text messaging. You need data to open those fb etc msgs .

        • +4

But you also need data to open to web page for the free SMS site.

        • +2

…but the recipient doesn't need data/smartphone. Plus recieving sms on an Australian sim when overseas is usually free, recieving data is usually not free. You sitting in hotel room overseas on wifi want to tell your mate where you are and want to avoid paying $1 or whatever international sms fee is and avoid them paying exorbitant roaming data charges could use this.

Was hoping for advice on Android Apps for free SMS to non-smart phones as lovepub said "i use other apps to do this ", not a NEG!

        • +1

I used to use the smsglobal free SMSes for which an app is available, but now they only offer a $1 worth of SMSes for signup. If anybody know of other SMS freebies with an API, do tell.

I suppose someone experienced with app programming could write a frontend to the aFreeSms web page. Not sure how much checking they do to make sure that a real web browser, not an app, is accessing that page. Edit: I see there's a captcha. That's not necessarily a problem, just present on the smartphone to the user.

  • Has anyone tested to see how instant it is? Just curious.

    • +1

      its fast nearly instant

The old adage rings true (pardon the pun):
If it's free, YOU are the commodity.

  • +1

Yes, it works well so far. May come in handy occasionally. Good post.

  • +7

I do wonder what the catch is.

    • +1

you get have to see ads when you send a SMS. If you send more than one SMS they rig the phone number box to make it hard to click and when you do manage to click it ads will pop up.

      • +1

Actually the left half of the phone number box causes a popup but the right half doesn't and you can proceed to fill a phone number by clicking there.

Tried work on Aussie number but never work on Hong Kong number.

If you're looking for a cheap but not free option http://www.fishtext.com/, They give you 0.3 euro for free to try it out (10 sms).
Their rates are pretty decent and fast to receive. 0.03 euro AKA 4.4c per text, and I think if you buy the credit in bulk you can get it a little bit cheaper than that.

    • +1

correct, i have an app for that on my phone, but nowadays everyone(my friend/family) using whatsapp so it's rarely use now

  • +1

There was a site poster many years ago in ozbargain use promo code to get 500 free SMS, think it was called global something if anyone remembers?

  • thanks

  • -3

Just remember that if someone is global roaming, it will probably cost them to recieve this SMS. If thats the case, rack them up a massive bill.

    • +5

That's not true. It's free to receive SMS even while roaming because you can't choose not to receive an incoming SMS like you can with an incoming call. You're only charged for SMS sent.

  • Bookmarked.

  • +2

I swear if TA posted this jv would have told him to move it to the forums because 'it isn't a deal' because its always been a thing.

  • +2

There used to be an App on Android to do this Jaxtr SMS, and they shut down,

  • +2

Don't really see the point of this. You can't put in your sender ID when you select Australia. So the person you are texting texts back some random number….

    • As brucefromaustralia suggested above, if you want a text back, put your number in the text of the message.
