I suspect it's more to do with the iPhone 6 - nothing worse than being caught with excess stock when the change over comes.

I had a look at that link and noticed a few things:
Firstly, the $480 you are referring to is for a 16GB handset.
Secondly, not everyone was able to sign up as a "Family" or "Friend" if you weren't.
Assuming you could get it, and paid $10 min per month, the 64GB handset (if still available!) was to be $20 a month, making it $30 x 24 months or $720, which is more than the $649 here.
So don't think your efforts were wasted, at least not on me. Just that it wasn't as good a deal as the $649 posted here.

That's a fallacy as that is on top of a (pretty good) plan, but not "outright". Each to their own, but should compare Apples to apples.
