If you feel like a short one way camping trip Apollo Rentals have relocation deals to move their vans. From $1 a day and in some cases they refund some of the fuel costs.
Downside of this is a hefty deposit and you have to find your own way back, but it may suit some of the more adventurous ozbargainers. If your travelling to these location for whatever reason it could be a novel way of getting there.
One I saw was Brisbane to Sydney over 3 days, but mostly they are to outback locations.
It seems you have to refresh the page and make a selection pretty quick as some were gone after delaying for a while.

Looks like it could be fun!
How do you get back?
Walk. Everywhere is within walking distance if you are prepared to walk far enough!
Better Idea: Pick up Cycling. If you want to save on cash stay at hostels or couch surf.
Public transport.
I used to do Driveaway car moving all the time when I was younger in the USA, great cheap way to see the place. Ended up going to nearly every state. Just pick a destination and there would usually be a car needing to be moved there, either someone moving or a company relocating their fleet for some reason. Was pretty funny driving a high end Merc and staying at hostels and cheapo motels!
From what I can see people do this less now - a quick check shows only a handful of cars needing to be moved.
http://www.autodriveaway.com/view_car_listNobody drives long distance in hire cars since the no frills airlines arrived.
But esp in Aus we do get a LOT of people want to see the coast, tho top end or the nullarbor and just about all of them seem to go the same direction lol. I guess it must be the direction in the lonely planet guide ;)Lots of people do driving holidays, myself one of them. Much prefer to see the sights than to fly.
I Love the obvious start at the grand canyon and see california, and spend some time going up the california coast vibes that the US campers are virtually all returning from lol. Also love the biggest RVs all need to come back from IOWA - bit of seee the mid west vibe.
Damn the deposit is pretty massive.
Was looking at Melbourne to Adelaide, was either $1,000 or $250 deposit.
Yeah $250 is a lot of money
Beware of apollo.
Rented one of their campervans for a 5 day kakadu trip from darwin.
Fridge didnt work. Aircon didnt work.
They wouldnt offer any sort of compensation or refund.
Had us over a barrel too as they wanted us to sign off on the contract before we could get our $1k deposit back and we had to leave for a plane flight.
Be careful!Hellsh trip with no aircon. What was meant to be a fun romantic trip ended up pretty sour.
I don't really get what you mean about sign off thing?
Do you mean you had to sign to say it was acceptable? You had to agree it wasn't poor or they refuse to return your deposit?
They might want you to Sign but if there was a problem why did you sign? You had a plane flight but why couldn't you arrange via correspondence later? Were they putting you under duress?
Use these strickly only if you don't need to travel. We (tried) to do this twice, about 18months apart. Both times got told the camper was no longer available. Once (CNS_BNE) the day before, then (BNE_SYD)was actually at the pick-up counter when told the van was no longer available.
Yeah I think that these are really not like a deal but you are working for their business and not getting paid. Otherwise it would cost them a lot to relocate their own vehicles, its not usually good locations. I wouldn't trust them to keep the booking.
Relocation rentals are pretty common knowledge IMO, they're also only a good deal for a select few given the limited rental time, very few Kms and insurance costs.
