  • My parents' 50" Soniq Plasma (bought in 2007 for $2000) is showing signs of imminent carking. Perhaps I should show them this.

We have three Soniq LCD TVs in the family, two 32" and a 42" 3D TV. Very happy with all of them. The picture is great but the speakers aren't great. They're OK for basic TV and sport but music doesn't sound very good and action movies sound very dull. Most people probably wouldn't notice, but some are a bit picky when it comes to sound. This TV does NOT have an stereo line-out, it only has an optical audio-out, so keep this in mind if you're thinking of hooking up better speakers.

Some people have commented that older Soniq models are slightly laggy when it comes to gaming, but I haven't noticed any problems. It's just something to consider if you're buying one mainly for gaming. You could always give Soniq a call tomorrow before purchasing, if you're concerned about gaming performance.

The PVR on my Soniq 42" is awful, but most TVs don't have very good recorders built in. The TV needs to be turned on to record, which I found out the hard way when I set it to record the F1 at 4am and woke up when the TV suddenly turned itself on with volume blaring. Turning the TV off cancelled the recording. They may have fixed this issue with later models but I don't know.

Instruction manual is here if you want to check other features:

when it finally dies maybe crack it open and try your hand at soldering on new caps if that's the problem?

  • Cheep! Cheep!

  • God dam it, brought for $499 just over a month a go. Grrrr.

If you have purchase insurance on your CC, check to see if they have a prie drop guarantee

  • Now showing $399 online.
Our Soniq 32 plasma in the bedroom is on its way out, not full HD but pretty good picture. Sound is not great, but more than adequate for our use.

  • Hdmi cec didn't work on 40' one, just to keep in mind

    • what is CEC ?

      • Consumer Electronics Control. Allows you to control other appliances like a receiver using your TV remote if they're connected via hdmi.

  • Warranty should be only 2 years, 1 year genuine and 1 year repair only.

  • Tempting. Might go in store & check it out, not expecting much for $399 but for something as a spare TV to use with the our PS4 & 360 it shouldn't be too bad.

    • I paid $499 for the thing and I am (was) happy with it. At $399 it's a steal. Use it for my games at 1080p on my HTPC.

      • Yeah ended up grabbing it, hopefully they send me the pickup Email before lunch & I can go grab it today.

i have a Soniq 24" with DVD inbuilt that I bought a year ago and it is pretty damn good. tuner is great. playback has worked with everything I've thrown at it. really nice TV. If I had room for a 48" tv then I'd be on this like an Ozbargainer on a freebie.

  • My mate and I literally went and bought this on Monday…now that's some poor luck!

    • They will refund the difference if he asks.

      • +1

Oh really? You think just go to the same store and ask?

        • Bought this on Saturday, do you really think so?

        • +4

Just confirming. Bought this on Saturday, went in today and got $100 store credit, bought a 2ds on the spot. Mad props to JB hifi.

  • Great price!

  • can anyone comment on the remote. it seems a lot of these cheap TVs have a lag in when the button is pressed or sometimes needs to be pressed a couple of times pointed at the right angle..

anyone have any problems with the remote on this tv?

    • +1

Remote is fine, the media player interface is a bit clunky but plays almost everything. Can't go wrong with 399, I payed 499 on Saturday :(

  • What is it like for gaming? The the Input Lag acceptable? I bought a soniq many years ago and it was fantastic for gaming but my friend bought a later model and the input lag was unbearable.

    • I play CS:GO with keyboard and mouse and don't experience any lag.

      • did you compare with a pc monitor to check? you could just adapt the lag couldn't you?

    • I got on Easter Monday and use with PS4.
TV+PS4 runs at 60HZ and I have played Killzone and COD:Ghost and I did not noticed any lags. The Lag is difficult to measure and for me i am happy with the purchase.

Since i paid 499, i ask over the phone to the sells guy and he told me coming in to the shop and they will fix it.

for 400 48 inch TV with 3 year warranty is a good choice.

      • Does it have HDMI CEC? I tried downloading the manual but couldn't find any information on it so it doesn't look like it does.

It's a bummer because I want to get a Chromecast which AFAIK needs CEC to turn on the TV automatically.

        • +1

i don't think so. all manual channel changing.

I've a 42" Soniq and have had no issues with it - only negatives are the 'Smart' interface is a little clunky (I've a HTPC so don't need to use it anyways) and the sound is a bit underwhelming for proper movies etc.

I'm pretty sure mine is 60hz though which is the only thing that'd put me off this particular TV when hooked up to a PC or whatever.
Anyone got one already that has experience of this?

JB Hifi does a 2 week price policy any store will refund the difference if it goes on sale.

Couldn't resist upgrading from my 32 to 48 for the bedroom. Damn you ozbargain.

  • How long does it take through Paypal for the money to go through? I paid it at 8:15am (it says it's in stock as well) this morning was hoping to pick up today sometime but it's still pending.

    Hi all,
Just wanted to throw in my perspective of owning a Soniq tv (older 3D model).

Decent colours, with rich blacks and whites (doesn't "blend" like some cheaper tvs).
    Digital TV receiver is decent
Limited inputs on mine, had to buy a cheap HDMI switcher
Limited support on the Soniq forums, but does exist.
    I believe it's a JB Hifi brand.
Speakers are average, but I never use them anyhow.

If memory serves, I bought mine for about $500 a year or so ago. Use it primarily as a 44" 3D computer monitor. I use it for gaming and XBMC and even my daily screen (used to it now).

Very happy with it and it looks a lot better than some of the other cheapies (such as Tyagi (worst IMO), Bauhn etc).

  • i m not sure if i should wait til EOFY sale? it is only about 1 month or so away…
more option and better price then?

    • Jb hifi is into the change over of the 2014 models coming through, most of the good 2013 stock has been sold and the rest are display models left. As for this tv I have never seen it this cheap. But for eofy deals we dont find out until 1-2 days before the day!

As I've put in other threads, years ago bought a 42'. Love the thing, recently I finally moved into my new place and my arm locked up carrying the TV, literally said f# it and threw it, cracked the side and the TV still works perfect. Let down are the speakers but still great for the price and still rate it above my 55' that I bought for close to 3K.

  • I've plugged my Changhong 50" to the pc thru PC-RGB/ VGA and love it! Anyone tried it as a monitor thru VGA? does it look good?

  • We bought this for $499 but returned it because the picture was grainy. We then went to dick smiths and bought something else for a little more and was worth it.

But for $399 its a good buy

  • Purchased this TV yesterday, intending to return it tomorrow. Picture was rather grainy I agree with what SBP said. Mine also came with a very prominent and obvious dead pixel. I mainly play games and watch Blu Ray movies tested both and wasn't very impressed… however that being said it is only $399 but I feel like if I spent an extra $200 I could get something significantly better.

    • Went to JB yesterday to buy one, untilI saw the 48" display. Looked terrible - very grainy. One had a blu-ray movie playing and another had a Foxtel show (not sure if it was a live feed or a Foxtel recording). Both looked terrible on the 48" Soniq TV. Maybe that was why they still had about 10 boxes of the 48" TV on the floor for sale.

      • HOW TO FIX GRAINY RESOLUTION: so after simply going into the menu and changing the "Sharpness" setting from default which is "50" to "0" it drastically improves the image quality an removed the grainy pixels. Much nicer now. I still have to return mine due to the bright pixel.

Thankfully it was my Xbox One HDTV calibration test that recommended reducing sharpness to lowest possible.

        • nice work, I did try to use different settings but didn't exactly do that

  • anyone else care to share some of the picture settings they are using for best picture quality

  • Bought one.

Not happy with the skin tones. All the picture modes make faces look rather pink or orange. I've played around with the user defined picture setting - but just can't get the skin tones to look natural. Other than this TV is pretty good for the price. But this does bug me.

Do others agree - or maybe I have a bad unit?

Also, I want to control TV basic functions using my Sony SVRHDT1000 PVR remote, but no listing for Soniq in the manual for the 2-digit manufacturer code. I've tried all the brands listed, including Philips which supposedly uses generic codes but no luck. Searched the net for codes as well but nothing. Sent emails to both Sony and Soniq.

    Anyone help?

    • Have the same issue with colour. I dropped all my colours (r, g, b) to zero and put colour to thirty slightly better but not much. Also drop the sharpness down to twenty. Not sure if we have dodgy panels.

      • Same. I played with all picture settings including colour levels, dropped them low even down to zero, to the point of washing out all colour - no matter just can't get skin tones to look right. Bad unit? Wondering if I should get a replacement or just stick with it as they are all the same. Others comment please.

        • You sure its not the crappy media? Mines fine with 1080p stuff. But ugly with SD.

        • I think that is probably part of it. Seems ok with hd content. I am happy anyway for the price it's a bargain and it is great having such a large TV in the bedroom.

  • Just watched monsters university on blu ray… It's flickery as with motion ghosting……. Fail :/ was pretty keen too. Apparently price goes back upto 499 tmr.

  • Just contacted Soniq, They said the TV defiantly doesn't come with a 3 year warranty.. one year only
anyone able to confirm they actually got the 3 years?

    • Register on their website for 3 yrs.

      • i did.. there was no where it said 3 years so i emailed them and they told me it was for only 1 year

        • Same here, I registered on website to get the 3yr warranty, but confirmation email doesn't mention anything about warranty period. I'm going to have to call them to check.

        • The guy at JB Hifi told me it was only a 2 year warranty. He said it's one year through Soniq and 1 year through JB Hifi. There's a flyer in the box that says you have to PAY for a 3 year warranty.

Service menu fixes a lot of things. Like red fix and native overscan fix. My mac now runs 1:1 pixel mapping.

    Service Menu.
