1GB Data Free on Virgin BYO $20 Plan (for Vodafone Customers Only)

190

This is my first post, too hard not to share… If you're sick of Vodafone, make the move I made today!
I recently had data usage charges dispute with Vodafone and decided to look for better deal. After some research, I found the following, but only applicable to existing Vodafone customers who will port their number to Virgin mobile.

Until 11th May 2014, if you port your Vodafone number to Virgin, join the Virgin BYO30 plan.
You only pay $20/month, you get $200 free calls, 1.2GB data (usually 200MB, but you get a bonus 1GB every month).
The free calls can be rolled over for one month, but data usage CANNOT. The bonus 1GB doesn't expire, unless you change plans or upgrade handset. Or if Virgin finds it not profitable to maintain, which means losing a lot of customers!
Of course you should enquire about the nitty gritty details such as call rates etc, which are pretty much similar to other providers. They use Optus network. I can't comment on coverage or quality or speed of Virgin, there's many differing reviews. But at least I know I've got more quota and it can't be worse than Vodafone.

(I better revise this post a little, I'm getting a lot of replies saying the website doesn't mention the bonus nor Vodafone customers….. This deal isn't advertised bcoz it's an under the table deal, as advised by Virgin dealer. But it is 100% true bcoz I changed yesterday arvo. I guess for legal or competition reasons, they can't advertise openly on their website…. I don't know, just sharing what I know.)

I was paying Vodafone $15/month for $20 free calls (no rollover), 700MB data and was told its a great deal which is no longer offered. I did look at Telstra and Optus, but they don't really have low usage plans for people like me. Then there's Vaya, Live Connected, Amaysim, Lebara who provide similar low usage plans, most using Optus network too. But I just couldn't get past insecurity of these smaller providers. At least Virgin is one of big 4 and some professional reviews say they have better stats than Optus themselves.

I changed over today and it was done within 1/2 hour, connection was almost instant. But please double check if you have any outstanding obligations with Vodafone, any cancellation fees etc.

    1.Telstra
    2.Vodafone
    3.Optus

    4 The rest including Virgin

There is only the big 3. Virgin doesnt have their own network ;). Optus's network (which Virgin uses) is pretty crap for a bunch of people out there (hello congestion!!) - reseller's aren't much better imho. Plus unless things have changed they charge their data in 1MB blocks — chews through any usage especially in poor signal/congested areas :/. As always will depend on your area…..

    • For the $30 BYO plan from this doc http://www.virginmobile.com.au/global/virgin-mobile/static/p…

      "Data
All data includes uploads and downloads and is deducted in KB
units. There are 1024KB in a MB and 1024MB in a GB. If you exceed
your data allowance, excess data will be charged at 5.2¢/ MB,
      billed per KB."

so i guess this plan is good for data but if you dont have access/slow network then it is obsilete

…will be sticking to my $20 plan with voda and not risking the virgin network

      • +3

Virgin dont have a network - Optus do, and most places it is a hell of a lot better than VodaFail, tho you may need a phone with 900MHz HSDPA (YesG) to make best use of it in congested areas as adding 900MHz cells is how they deal with congestion.

    • I'm a new user and just sharing what I found out today. I did state "I can't comment on coverage, quality or speed of Virgin, there's many differing reviews…"

Sorry, this was reply to smurfinaus…

      • -7

Why would you write such a long description and not mention things like how the data is charged and the call rates?
        That's what it's for.

        • I didn't bcoz my post is already an essay.
I did mention people should check out the nitty gritty which is available on the website.
I also warned people to double check their existing obligations, cancellation fees etc before making the move.
For those who are interested, I'm sure they will double and triple check with the dealer before deciding.
Why are people so blunt and opinionated, I was trying to share which I thought oz bargain was for…

        • +1

Because MOST of us appreciate the work he put in and arent too lazy to click rather than be spoonfed if we are interested!
With people like you around it is a wonder anyone posts at all - I didnt see you adding to the discussion with the call rates in your post!
(Yocau - that is a response to luke, not you)

        • Thank you! Finally someone with empathy…. : )
I don't know why people who aren't interested have to comment.
This site is for sharing… If you don't want to believe it, then don't!
(Btw, I'm a 'she', hence why a bit shocked and overwhelmed) : p

        • +3

It is great to comment - the more info the better - that is why the system is there - its just sad how much it gets used for just nastiness instead.

Adding the call rates would have been really useful (as is discussion of network speeds in various areas rather just ' duh optus sux')…. just saying you typed heaps but you should have taken even longer because i dont want to click the link to find out - not so much. But there ARE plenty of good people who would just have added the call rates instead, so please dont give up on us :)

For the record I am regional and find optus great but vodafone unusable. Cant afford Telstra and just about never needed the extra range, tho my father in law needs a Telstra phone for his work.

        • Otherwise known as standard optus reseller rates, as noted in the OP

        • Thanks for the extensive info!
What is 'OP'? I've seen it twice…. By a moderator? How did u know that?
This is becoming a tutorial more than anything…. Thanks mycosys

        • OP = Original Poster - in this case you :)
And I knew because he was talking to me last night after i got banned for responding to a troll - I have a bad habit of 'white knighting' (going to the 'aid' of those I feel are unfairly attacked) and gave him a mild personal about the consistently negative nature of his involvement of the site, why he comes here and whether he had posted a deal yet lmao. He has been trolling me since my first posts here - I gave up for a while myself. Hopefully that is vague enough not to be problematic lol. He lifted my ban a bit early so I could post another deal.
YOU however can see that he is by clicking his name and seeing moderator, under role, which isnt there for the rest of us lol.
And I am really glad i could help you, Its probably dumb but i get a kick out of making people happy - Why I have spent so much time volunteering and working in entertainment - wish I could be out doing it more these days but im disabled thx to dodgy genes

        • Aha, got it! Thanks again.
Yes, I went around clicking people's names after seeing moderator, nosing around seeing the hierarchy here…lol
You are a white knight! I could tell from the start.
We are similar people… Outspoken, can't stand injustice and feel over the moon when I can help someone!
Oh no, that's no good… So you are stuck at home, so the internet is your friend : )
Maybe you should be a moderator here too, since you have so much experience… That way you can help and defend more people, provide proof of certain deals etc…

        • "National call rate Unlimited Calls VtoV or 98c/min (billed per min) + 40c call connection."
A call that lasts 01:01 will cost $2.36.
If you make 3 calls a day that last 01:01 each it will cost $7.08.
The $200.00 credit will be all used up before the end of the month.

        • Thank you for your kind words - little taken aback tbh lol.
I dont know if i would become a mod if they offered, but i doubt very much they would as I tend to disagree with some of them on what constitutes trolling and slander for instance - swearing and saying a merchant who you have never bought from sells crap that is likely to explode for instance is in my book unjustifiable slander. As would be claiming that a merchant is deliberately lying without evidence of such, but i have reported both and been told they weren't. I admin some lil facebook groups and even on ones I created running things by the rules can be really hard. For instance giving a fair go to somebody in my skeptic group (where the rules are around fairness and politeness and not acting like a know all ass) who I would far prefer to just ban can be emotionally taxing. But even if i know they are trolling need to rat their opinions as just as valid as anyone elses. Have done a lot of that kind of thing, even administering fairly large organisations via mailing lists, and it is hard work.

  • +1

No thanks. Where does it mention there is an extra 1GB of data on the $20 BYO plan?

    • It doesn't say on their website. The guy told me it's an under the table deal which they don't advertise. I found out via online sales chat with Virgin rep.

      • Thanks. All is well. This has been confirmed by Hamza (MOD)

  • Are you a Rep Yocau?
The description smells a bit like a rep.
Sorry if you aren't, but the fact you joined 40 minutes ago doesn't help either.

    • +1

No I'm not a rep for Virgin.
Just a consumer who thought I found a good deal and wanted to share. Hence why I just joined for the first time, never had anything else to broadcast. But regularly checking oz bargain for good deals.

    • -2

LOL, I reread after reading your post, it reads like a paid post. I would love to neg it for that fact alone, but I have no proof.

      • I am not a rep and I don't get anything out of it… So hard to be nice without being doubted….
People don't need to believe it or take up the offer, there's no need for some of these comments. Doesn't oz bargain ban/prevent these non constructive comments?

        • I wish - sadly it is full of nastiness and plenty of people who even free isnt good enough.

Became friends with a merchant who tried to GIVE AWAY $150+ rolls of vinyl but got slammed by dozens for needing to charge to get them from the warehouse to his showroom so they could be picked up, or shipped direct from the warehouse elsewhere. People couldnt appreciate the deal, and if they didnt want to pay the shipping them leave it be - they had to neg it into oblivion. He runs half a dozen very cheap businesses and funnily enough has not been back.

We REALLY need more nice people like you, so PLEASE dont go. We arent ALL like that.

        • +2

Oh dear… What's wrong with humanity nowadays.
Honestly, why would I bother staying up in early hours of the morning posting and justifying myself. I have better things to do, like SLEEP, so I can care for my 4 kids tmrw!

    • +1

This is why we cant have nice things. There always has to be SOMEBODY here to drive the people trying to help away.
Just for reference - there are these things called good people - and they do nice things like go through an entire signup process just to help others with a good deal.
Not to mention - Why in hell would a rep advertise a secret deal and why would a company as big as virgin need to sockpuppet?

      • How do you 'LIKE' things on here?

        • lol the little + buttons (or minus to downvote them, but you only get 5 negative comment votes a day - it is SUPPOSED to be a nice place lol. partly the negative votes on comments are used so that if somebody puts a negative vote on a deal, if it gets a -6 rating the vote will be cancelled. You cant put a -ve vote on a deal without giving a reason, unlike +ve votes :)

        • Oic…. Kinda makes sense now… My + works now, I have to tap it twice, just like 'reply' or 'votes'….might be an iPad thing…. Thanks for your expertise and kindness to explain. : )

        • That was added to prevent accidental taps resulting in votes on touchscreen devices. It's not the same on a desktop browser, so that's probably why you weren't quite getting it to begin with.

FYI, the Wiki is probably a good place to start if you're brand new. The basics are here

        • Thanks. I will if I find time….: ) really didn't know it was this confusing…. Now I'm having trouble keeping track of new comments… Even though there's a yellow 'new' icon. Maybe it's getting too late for me… Lol

        • +3

There's a 'Mark All Read' button down below in the orange bar, if that's any help. It clears all the orange 'new' notifications so it's easier to keep track of them.

        • Oic, thanks!

  • It doesn't mention anything about Vodafone on the page…
Optus coverage is better than Voda but the speed isn't quite on par with both Telstra and Voda… probably because of excessive overselling (Too many resellers like Vaya, LC, TPG, iiNet etc and I can go on and on and on)

    • True, I agree with the latter. But I wasn't getting good coverage with Vodafone anyway, so nothing to lose. But yes, too many resellers using Optus network.
As mentioned in another reply, it's not advertised, but an under the table deal bcoz they know there's a lot of uproar with Vodafone customers ATM. Virgin did have this deal with other providers too, which has since expired.

  • Can't find additional 1GB data for $30 BYO. Or anything refering Voda like what it was mentioned:
    — if you port your Vodafone number to Virgin, join the Virgin BYO30 plan.—

    • Please see my revised post or previous replies.. Thanks

      • Why neg me?? I wrote that before Yocau said anything about under the table and I didn't see that. Of course Yocau might be typing/updating it while I am typing it. But Thanks for the info, appreciate it.

        • How does one neg a comment? It wasn't me for sure… Still getting the hang of things here…
I clicked '+' on a few comments, assuming it is equivalent to 'like'… But it didn't show up. I was wondering how the -ve vote came about….
Sorry, I was delayed replying to you jeryw…. Bcoz I was revising my original post as many people asked what you did.
          Thanks

        • +1

Your post comes across a lot like you are attacking Yocau since she is the only one to have commented.
Yocau - negative votes are anonymous, but you can see +ve votes by clicking votes. I dont know why it isnt working for you? Hamza23 might - he is a moderator.

        • +1

Sorry, if it sounded like that. The reason I wrote that because I went to the linked page (virgin site) and I can't find anything about voda to virgin or 1GB data. It was more a question asking clarification.

        • It's interesting that I (not sure about everyone else) can see who placed the + votes! but the - votes are not shown…. Maybe in fear of reprisal?

Now, I've worked out how to 'like' a comment!

        • It's ok, I know what you meant.
mycosys is helping a newbie like me : )

    • +1

I got negged for asking the same question. It's reasonable for members to ask for proof especially when the page linked to the deal says nothing about a bonus 1GB data.

      • No you didn't…. Someone negged my reply to you…. Dunno, wasn't me to you.

        • +1

Thanks ok. I am not worried who negged me. I was just agreeing with jeryw that we couldn't see anything about the bonus 1GB data, but you explained it and others have confirmed it since.

      • You have the word of a site moderator below (Hamza23) who has spoken to the Virgin rep will that do? Or you could have rung Virgin, or one of their stores, since it isnt an online deal apparently.

Did it occur to you, though, that the neg might have been for the way you posted, not your question? That posting 'no thanks' which seems to say you don't want it either way, followed by demanding more even though you don't want to use it makes you seem…. a little unpleasant? You could have even started with 'thank you for all the info' for example……

Dont worry tho- I didnt waste a neg on you.

        • +3

No thanks was in response to the initial title of the deal which read " Time for Vodafone customers to change to Virgin Mobile". The fact that I used the word thanks indicates it was a polite response.

It's important that all facts relevant to a deal are verified so members can make an informed decision on a deal. It was a legitimate question to ask about the bonus data as there was nothing written in black and white.

        • It's all cool…. Your initial comment isn't as bad as others…. Maybe came across wrong.
Hmmmm, you just restated my title…. But I see a revised title "1GB Data Free on Virgin BYO $20 Plan (for Vodafone Customers Only)"
          I was wondering about that….

Another thing is, I thought people post bargains to 'announce' deals they find, but it is up to the individual who's interested to investigate further before taking up the deals. Eg. People who post super cheap prices of items are only broadcasting what they found or bought. There's no guarantee all stores have it or any stock left. So if I wanted it, I'd ring or go around for it. The OP isn't the supplier or merchant in most cases, we are third parties… Is that right or did I miss something?

        • +2

But I see a revised title "1GB Data Free on Virgin BYO $20 Plan (for Vodafone Customers Only)"
          I was wondering about that….

Check the 'Revisions' tab just under the title at the top. You'll see that hamza revised the title to be a bit more informative, as mods and power users often do.

          Another thing is…

It's a bit of both. Depends what kind of poster you want to be. While you aren't wholly responsible for all aspects of the deal, it's recommended you do some legwork before posting (post basic information in the description, check competitor's pricing to ensure it's a deal, search OzBargain to make sure it isn't a duplicate, etc). You don't have to check every single store for stock on others' behalf, obviously, but just say what you found and notify people there may be low stock if that's the case. That's all covered in the Deal Posting Guidelines. It might seem harsh, but the guidelines are in place mainly to enforce a measure of quality on the submissions, and make things easier on mods.

        • +1

Oic re revisions, so unity1 only saw my initial title and then commented based on that.

I did briefly skim through the posting guidelines, I checked it wasn't duplicate and saw that I should put in more info in the title… Not very creative in that dept… Wanted to yet too much to say just in title.
I guess I just put out there exactly what happened to me and didn't want to bore everyone with the process of my findings in relation to checking competitors' prices etc. now I know the importance of presenting all the raw data. Honestly, as I mentioned before, I thought people would do the legwork if they were interested.

Thanks ProspectiveDarkness, I see you are an expert too. Appreciate your guidance as well. Will know for next time…

  • I guess Amaysim is still better value compared to this mnvo who give hundred of dollars as credit n charges $2-3 for 60 sec call…

    • I don't know yet… But according to their fine print, it says for a 2min call, the charge is $2.36 flag fall included (from memory)
Which is very similar to other providers like Amaysim, vaya, Lebara etc… Can't rem all the details.
I haven't got my first bill yet, but $200/mth is plenty for me, same with the data usage limit.
Maybe after a few months, I might add to this post demoting the whole deal and cursing Virgin as well.

      • No its not similar to amaysim. Amaysim has flat n actual charges like 12c,10c etc without flagfall per minute..

  • +3

Thanks for your post OP. The online rep knew about the deal, I was advised it can be done in store or over the phone as they need to verify that you are a Vodafone customer when doing the port to receive the 1gb data.

    • +1

      Yes, exactly right….
Maybe also they don't want to breach any legalities and competition stuff.
      Thanks for the confirm.

  • Moved from Vodafone $30 plan to virgin $30byo plan(pay $20) a month ago with 1gb bonus data.
With coverage, (sgs4 vodafone model so no 4g plus…. I think)
I have not travel outside Melbourne yet with virgin. But at home, work and travelling the signal strength is poor than vodafone but it stays on 4g more often.
    Vodafone 3/4 bars avg
    Virgin 2/3 bars avg
With internet speed vodafone 4g was faster @ 75/15Mbps vs virgin 60/14Mbps.

So based on a month's experience with virgin mobile, it's just OK. And the phone charge seems to drop bit quicker that when I was with Vodafone.

    • Oh ok…. Doesn't sound promising… Will wait and see… But where I am, Vodafone wasn't good anyway, but at least with extra $180 free calls and another 500MB data, I won't be going over my limit as easily as with Vodafone. $20/mth doesn't go far these days… So my cheap monthly fee balloons with excess usage.
      Thanks

      • +1

        "Doesn't sound promising…"
It depends on where you live and phone you use! If vodafone coverage was bad, then no matter what, you have made a better choice.

    • I did the same switch as you in Sydney. Call quality seems better under Virgin, unless it's a placebo effect. I haven't had any calls drop or where one end can't hear the other yet.

3G coverage is similar, but under Virgin frequently dips to standard 3G whereas Voda was HSPDA practically anywhere 3G was available. Haven't bothered to test 3G speed yet.

And agree with the phone charge dropping faster.

  • +1

Thank you Yocau - I have been on the lookout for a new plan - might have to port to Voda first and then back lol.
Some of us appreciate what were given :) I appreciate you

    • +1

      Hmmm, I assume u r already a virgin customer now? U're too funny…..
Thanks for your support, there is hope…. Now I can go to sleep feeling better : )

      • Sleep sweet

  • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140686 still looks better to me given it's Telstra = better data speeds where I'd use it.

    • Thanks for that. I will check it out too. If it's better, I can still change from virgin to telechoice. : )

  • +1'ed because I'm a Vodafone user for the last 10+years and I'm so sick of them even though I cant take advantage of the offer since my contract with Vodafail doesn't end for another 6months.
Coverage is so ridiculous I used to get it in the airport tunnel and now I get zilch!

The benefit of Virgin is that international calls are included in their monthly usage quota. However, if you don't have a 4G device, some 3G areas are bad. I am having issues using it in the Perth CBD. If on 4G it's fine. When drop to 3G good bye internet. I have complained to Optus about this and they are yet to fix it and its almost 2 months now since I raised it as befoer it was working fine. It's just one tower in the Perth CBD and unfortunately I am connected to that tower at my office.

    • Out of curiousity - do you have 900MHz too?
