Cheapest Comprehensive Car Insurance

Hi,

I am just wondering which company do you guys have your cars for the cheapest comprehensive car insurance?

Need to renew mine, and the company i am with no is pretty expensive.

It really depends unfortunately, and you will need to do a quote with each company.
With some companies, you can literally put in two addresses next to each other and come up with different figures.

Yep, agreed. We've found with different cars we are better with different companies too. None seem to come out consistently cheaper, just too many variables. Online quoting makes it fairly easy to compare though. Doesn't take too long to stick in the details.

    Over 30? go with coles

Coles for me - and I claimed in 1st year so I'm well ahead.

I just dumped Allianz and went with Progressiveonline.
Been paying comp insurance for nearly 50 years now and never a claim… but they still keep increasing the premiums each year… I suppose someone has to pay for the bad drivers out there…

Whoever you decide to go with do some checking into their claims performance. They are all good at taking a premium but most are piss poor when it comes to needing their service.
The supermarket ones seem to be amongst the worst.

If driving less than average driver in your area. you can choose pay as you drive option with Woolworth, it provides comprehensive cover based on Kms.

I can certainly recommend "Bingle" based on price… they charged us less than half of what RACV quoted us to renew our (long-standing) policy. We're in the process of making a claim right now, so I'll repost when more details on how that goes come to hand. They've certainly done everything right so far, i.e., were very kind/ supportive when my wife rang them to lodge the claim/ report the accident (unquestionably her fault), first question was "are you OK", then reassured that it happens to everyone, not to worry, etc.; excellent customer service, my wife tells me. Communication has been good since then also. So far so good; stay tuned.
As another wise poster mentioned above, with some of them you literally pay per KM driven, so if you don't drive much one of them would seem to be the obvious place to start re getting quotes to compare.
One final thing to think about, is insuring it for "agreed value" (i.e., any amount that you choose, basically) and keeping that pretty low, in order to reduce your premiums… particularly if you're pretty confident that you won't have an accident that's your fault. Check on ebay what your car is currently selling for from car-yards, and you may be surprised how low it is… I certainly was; it seems cars over 5 years old suddenly plummet in value/ cost to replace.

Appreciate the feedback on the claim process and efficiency. A+

    • +1 for Bingle.they are owned by Suncorp, same as AAMI, better quotes. They never fail to impress.

Thanks for letting us know the claim process.

One thing bad with Bingle and other 'cheap providers' is excesses.

If you have a not at fault accident, you still have to pay the full excess.

      • Only if the person at fault could not be identified..right ?

      • You pay the excess at the start of the claim process but get it back once bingle is happy you are not at fault. I had a claim in 2009 for almost $14000 and the process was smooth. Repairs have a lifetime warranty.
My premium is only just over $500 so it will take them decades to break even.

I'm with Budget but shop around every year.

After doing so this year, I contacted Budget with the lowest price I found and they matched it.

Allianz & the like were double (or more) the lowest price.

For cheapest the recommendations above will be best
    Just remember cheapest isn't best

Lots of OzBers will buy the cheapest razor or the cheapest noodles or whatever
That isn't for everyone though and you may well "pay the higher price" if you ever need to claim, negotiate your pay out price, choose a repairer (or be allocated one a long way away), receive a free loan car during repairs, etc.

Just remember insurance is basically a promise - it's easy to get someone to give you a cheap promise
Getting them to deliver on that promise when the time comes - different story

Well I get quotes by ANZ insurance for $3000 comprehensive. It's not like they will answer the phone when I am in trouble, probably will send me to the Indian call centers.

I think the point is you have to know the PDS inside and out, so you make them keep their cheap promise.

  • any bad experiences with the insurance company denying any claims??

I'm a 22 year old with full liscence (classified as a 'high risk' driver' yet havent had any fines, crashes, accidents).
Driving a chyrsler sebring 2009 model.

I called up woolworths and they were almost double the quote i recieved from AAMI :(

    • I think you'll still be a high risk driver for another 3 years, till you're 25yo.

  • I went with AAMI after being displeased with GIO( Victoria), funny enough I got a quote from budgetdirect and AAMI was cheaper!

    • All these price differences are ridiculous.

I tried AAMI and they were twice the price of Budget (even before they price matched).
Yet, like you, some have found them cheaper.

It's not as if I have a bad record either & I've been driving for a long time.

  • I am with Woolworths, cheaper then my existing one, saved $134 per year…

  • ENDED UP WITH QBE. $567.

    Others quoted $757!!

    • Uh what??? You must have a long safe driving records? I would be more than happy to get comprehensive at $800..

  • I'm 26, Woolworths was the cheapest for me, they also gave me a $75 fuel card along with roadside assistance.

I pay $72 per month in case I find a cheaper deal elsewhere, on the second month they sent the fuel card.

Just some funny tricks that "most" Insurance company do.. The renewal letter is usually higher in cost than a newly done Quote.. Example. Colleague was telling me he got a renewal letter from Bingle for $789 and the claim cost of his Corolla had dropped to $7100. He went ahead and did a new quote (from Bingle) and the new cost was $739 and he was able to select $10,700 for the value of the car. That got me thinking.

  • By way of a (somewhat belated) update to my original post above, the claim and actual repair-job facilitated by Bingle was awesome, from start (phone-call advising them of the crash) to finish (flawlessly repaired car back in our drive-way). We could not be happier with any aspect of their service. The repair-joint contracted by Bingle in our case ('Sanick motor body works')was extremely professional (and their staff polite), and their repairs are absolutely top-notch (cannot fault a single thing). So having now gone through the entire claim process (quite a costly claim for Bingle in this case; > 4K worth of damage to our car, + an unknown amount to a BMW that they no doubt also had to cover), I absolutely OBJECTIVELY (i.e., I have no affiliation with either Bingle or the repair company), hand on heart can highly recommend Bingle. Their prices are about as cheap as you can get for comprehensive (at least in our age-bracket, > 30), yet I found their service when it came time to make a claim completely flawless (i.e., I can't possibly see how a more expensive company could possibly have done any better).
So based on my experience, Bingle is clearly the 'winning' choice for cheap comprehensive car insurance. I'd be interested to hear of the experiences of others.

  • Cant go past Coles price beat guarantee policy. Now paying $450 comprehensive with protected max no claim bonus, 500 excess and $75 coles voucher when i took it out!

  • maybe i should call coles for the price beat guarantee ~

  • Woolworths had similar premium to Coles or RAC-WA for me, but big discount if limit distance to 10,000km.
And a bonus $100 woolworths gift card. ( So ended up only $100 more than third-party only would have cost!)

So if you are driving low milage, try Woolworths.

  • Youi

    my cars

    2011 Proton Gen 2 $284

    2011 Kia Koup $288

    2003 V35 350GT Skyline $520 ———-all on a rating 1, over 40

    • youi was only slightly cheaper than RACQ for me (can't remember exactly but it was under $50 difference).
Wasn't interested with Youii after they refused our home insurance because we were within 200metres from a canal (but we are not in a flood zone at all) - that would mean most of Gold Coast they won't cover.

  • progressive. but then I try to use the lowest quote to get a price beat with another company , e.g. NRMA.
