Probably applies to other cities as well, but could only find info for Melbourne & Brisbane.

In Melb, any sign that has the days of the week on it, is free on public holidays…
Here's a sample sign from Sydney:
Sydney street signs
Nothing is for free in Sydney!
Doesnt Melbourne get free public transport days here and there … nothing in Sydney , with the exception of the free shuttle bus which has been cut down from a loop around the City to just running up and down a street
EDIT: However just found this from a 2012 publication, not sure if it is still applicable (http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/doingbusinesswithus/downloads/tech…) : "If the scheme is to apply on public holidays, the words 'INCLUDING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS' must be included on the sign.
Thanks OP!
How did I not know this?! Thanks!
How did I not know this?
Try topping up a meter on a public holiday, it doesn't accept the money…
Alright the heat is getting too intense here
Calm down boys
Wow jv, you're like the Grinch who stole Christmas. Or stole my parking spot. On Christmas :-P
Or stole my parking spot.
You're welcome to use mine…
I didn't know this and appreciate this post.
I'm kinda freaked out by jv's amount of comments here.

Apologies, I've been a bit lazy tonight…
Perth CBD is also free on public holidays.
who cares…
Can't believe I missed out on this heated exchange. Sad now :(
Sorry to disappoint, but it wasn't really heated…
It was just different opinions on whether a Council's policy that hasn't changed for decades can be declared a bargain…
You guys are good for a laugh. Ever ozbargainer should know that street parking is at a premium even during off peak. The trick is to find a nice empty open air commercial carpark. Check that its not a wheel clamping area and your good to go.
Should be free every weekend. Brisbane is becoming a ghost town since the new parking rates.
Evening and weekend parking from $5 at selected parking stations in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and on the Gold Coast https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140697
or
parking reduced to $3 in Melbourne CBD until 20/4/14 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/139949
This has always been free. Not a bargain.
BEWARE. For Melbourne there is some fine print. It only applies to zones that have conditions that relate to a particular day of the week. If the sign does not differentiate on days then it is NOT free and the time restrictions apply.

I don't know about Sydney… but I have heard that this used to be true. But if you look at the street signs some of them know quote "and public holidays" …
