iPhone 3G S Outright / Unlocked from Apple Store, 16GB $879, 32GB $1040

338

It seems Apple are going to be selling the new iPhone 3G S outright in the Apple stores. It will be unlocked. Several Whirlpoolers (myself included) have called the Apple stores and this has been confirmed with the following pricing:

16GB – $879
32GB – $1040

That is cheaper than buying it prepaid with Voda! If you just want the handset it really is the best option. Who would have thought it Apple?

(Edited by TeaEarlGrey - added "$" in title)

    Cool!!

    • indeed… hope that crackberry deal on 3 you posted earlier is still going blinda, this would be great to combine with it :)

      • No, it has just ended recently. I'm sure some people got it intending to add an iPhone.
That 3GB will be useful now that tethering is allowed by Apple.

I call this 'good news' for iPhone junkies (like me). I wouldn't call a $1000 phone a 'bargain'.

  • +1

I think it depends how you look at it. Previously the cheapest way to buy outright (for the same model) was about $200 more, hence I classified this as a bargain.

  • +1

    I'm excited

  • +1

Hmmmm.. can i justify paying a grand for a phone and then some more for prepaid/plan, and then theres internet data pack charges….decisions decisions..

    • +1

:) I can't and will never be able to justify paying a phone more than $500 but that's just me.

  • any idea on what the current iphone will be selling for. Need to get one for my friend, but am waiting for prices of current one to go down once new 3GS comes out

    • 719 for the 8GB 3g

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's is all.

  • does anyone know if the apple education discount will apply to this?

    • I don't think so, if I remember correctly Apple doesn't even offer a discount on iPods anymore.

How is this a bargain? Even tho this is exciting NEWS, go post it on Digg.com or something lol

    • -1

How is it not a bargain? It's cheaper than prepaid.

      • +5

        RRP != bargain.

    • Yeah I wouldn't call it a bargain myself but none the less, it will probably help someone out here so I won't neg it.

Reasons I wouldn't call it a bargain is
      a) It's still expensive (and while Vodas prepaid may be more, at least it's got bonus credit ect (see http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/iphone/3gspricing/)
      b) The Optus 12 month plans as far as I can tell aren't a lot more and thats with the service included.

Obviously those that don't want to be on Voda Prepaid or Optus Post Paid will benefit but.

@itsross : Considerably cheaper than alternatives.Previously the cheapest way to buy outright (for the same model) was about $200 more, hence I classified this as a bargain.

  • -1

It's a bargain because many people have been trying to figure out the cheapest way to get an iPhone 3GS that is not locked to a carrier, as some folks are locked into contracts or simply don't want a contract.

I'd say this is more of a bargain than half the stuff posted here because up until this news from Apple, the prices were around $1200 for the new iPhones. That's hundreds of dollars off the best estimates previously available.

  • +5

not a bargain. this is simply rrp price.

  • how is this a bargain? it's retail price?

  • people selling them on ebay new will be in trouble now. $1599 I saw for the 32gb. Older models people want a grand, Wonder if this will push the old 16gb secondhand prices down under $600. I will wait a couple of weeks to see if 3 come out with a deal or buy one

    • Yeah. But 2nd hand Apple always fetches pretty good price — sometimes you don't know whether it's the seller has unrealistic expectation, or the buyer basically has no idea.

  • HI..just wondering, if I buy this iphone 3G S from US, can I use it in Australia?

  • It's great you can finally buy it outright now without the hassle of unlocking and jailbreak etc. Still very pricey for a phone though :/

    • +1

      its more than a phone!

anyone who owns one will agree with me

      • girlfriend has it, i play it and dont like it.

  • +1

I just paid $899 + $120 to unlock from Optus so I could use it on 3. Then I find 3 are getting the 3GS directly ..

    … now I get this!

    I can't win :)

    • That's what you get for jumping the gun!! ;)

  • if you get this the best plan option i think is TPG. i'm on it i pay $50 a month for $1000 worth of calls and 500mb data. and best of all NO CONTRACT!!!

    • I guess you pay a premium for the "no contract" status

      Because iPhone ($879) + 24 x $50 = $2,079

      Compared to Virgin ($70 + $8) a month x 24 months = $1,872

      • Voda sell it free on $69 plan
also, if you are a member of raa or nrma and put your order online/phone, you get 10% off and 2 months free.

    Not a bargain, it's RRP!

If you paid more than retail price, then you got ripped off!

  • +1

wonder why so many people say its not a bargain but refuse to give a -ve.

for one, i say its not a bargain. its rrp and just because ebay or some telco has a higher price, its definitely not a bargain

    • +1

      alright, you've convinced me

      • +1

        Agreed, Nooooooo Bingo.

This is more of a forum post than a bargin post.

  • Its good for knowledge sharing. The forums is a better place to post I think.
    But no negative from me.

    • Same from me. I did consider it for a few moments but at the end of the day $879-1040 does go a long way elsewhere too. 1 phone or a brand new netbook with change. The latter works better for me. But no negative because I'm a fan of seeing more fans available for outright purchase, not all of us do contracts, I'm with TPG 79cap, no-contract, no intentions of ever going back on contract.

Good find, not a bargain but still a tempting deal.

This is like saying you can buy a macbook pro from 1899, which is the RRP… not a bargan!

  • This post "bargain" should be deleted as unauthorised advertising. It (RRP) is not what this site is about IMO!

EDIT: yes I accidently voted positive, so used to it :) Admins please change mine to negative.

    • You can revoke your vote by clicking the red button on the votes page.

Unless ruled otherwise, 30+ positive votes is sufficient reason to leave this deal in place.

    No bargain at all.

  • -1

    No bargain at all.

  • As a CBA employee we get 6% off at Apple, try your luck. Just give a 6 digit number as a staff ID.
So that would be around $830 and $980

  • yeah, like everyone says this is the RRP price, nothing special. Not such a good phone either.

    IPhone 3GS + RRP = =( + Broke

  • Now you can buy online. I suppose that means you can get 3% back from MoneyBackCo?
