bet you're still hanging onto the zip drives though, cost as much as a cheap laptop, all for 100Mb.

    freeware belongs here

I think it's a bit different when it's software that previously cost money but is now free.

      • -4

it's not temporarily free, it is freeware…

It is not the full laplink software, it is a cut down, freeware version…

You're forgetting the free 24/7 phone, email, and web chat support.

  • Seems a bit strange to me that Microsoft are partnering with a third party to provide this when in theory they already have their own file & settings transfer wizard. Lack of confidence in their own product?

    • wow, you must be new to micro$oft?

    • The files & settings transfer wizard doesn't come with 24/7 phone, email, or web chat support.

      • and you can't go from XP to 8.1 with Easy Transfer (for some bizarre reason)

    • If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you'll notice the PCMover Pro Buy Now link.. they're not putting that there out of love.. so not only $$ from new OS, but get a little kickback from any sales of PCMover Pro as well..

Support for WinXP might be dead, but I predict many PCs will still be running it well into the future. I have no intention of replacing my WinXP VMs with Win7.

    • Many large enterprises are still using XP client machines. I am forced to use one every day :P

Why would you "loathe" Microsoft? XP is 12 years old now

    • He's just reaching adolescence and they pull the life plug from the poor boy.

I read that whole passage in an Indian voice :P

  • /. had an article saying that the UK gov't has paid Microsoft a pile of money to provide continued security patched and/or other support for its numerous Win XP installations.

    So, XP isn't dead, yet.

On this "deal" why doesn't the freebie LapLink provide a 2-way link between versions of Windows, one of which being XP?

Ie, why insist that XP is source of data being sent?!? Just plugin a portable HD & skip silly restrictions like that.

    • Ie, why insist that XP is source of data being sent?!?

Because they're trying to get people off XP?

    • I'm fairly nostalgic when it comes to computing but with an OS you really need to move with the times and keep updated.

  • I'm amazed by how many people are insisting on sticking with XP. In a world where so much of our life is online being ignorant, cheap or just plain stupid when it comes to technology is plain crazy.

    • While I will agree with you, arguably XP has spent 12 years of its life being fixed and bettered. Surely by now bit could be considered one of the most stable and reliable (windows) OSes.

      • "Surely by now bit could be considered one of the most stable and reliable (windows) OSes"

Yes, but that's not the point. Windows vulnerabilities are continually being found. MS sends out patches to fix these. Most of the the time Vista/7/8/8.1 vulnerabilities also apply to XP. Hackers will be able to look the patch list from MS and simply use them to attack XP machines that will never be fixed.

Once again, running XP (connected in anyway to the net) now is plain stupid.

My issue is I have some expensive 3rd party hardware like high end scanners that HP only made XP drivers for. When I run up their last version of the driver I will only get limited (basic) functionality on Win 7 making the device very average and unstable. The scanners still perform perfectly and I'd rather not throw them away as this is just wasteful and I hate being forced. So we'll be looking to lock down various XP machines and keep them running for a few years yet.

In this case, a VM would be handy.

Not me. I'm upgrading to Vista now!

  • "recover from the shock of the news"

They announced it a few years ago that they were stopping support and gave users and businesses lots of time to test and upgrade.

I do agree the warning should've come up on people's machines a lot earlier.

  • This reminded me of the hysteria in relation to the 2k bug scare. Although Microsoft is no longer support Windows XP with future patches does mean you can no longer use it. In fact I have turned off auto update years ago and is happy driving my ancient hardwares like scanner and video camera.

No one seems to voice their disgust when hardware vendors do not provide support with drivers for never Windows because they can't. Microsoft seems to be an easier target and took most of the blame.

I don't expect Microsoft to divert their attention to support XP forever. I rather they be more innovative as this has been rather lacking in the last decade.

Some people suggest linux but it is rather frustrating to use. Its desktop ui is very unstable with alot of crashes. Its command line server version is stable but very hard to setup for most people. I really appreciate what Microsoft have done with Windows in general.

    • In fact I have turned off auto update years ago and is happy driving my ancient hardwares like scanner and video camera.

Of course they'll still work. But they will not have any new security patches. If you use those machines to access the internet, you're vulnerable. If you don't, you're probably fine.

    • Interestingly, I find Windows frustrating, limiting and crashes more often than any of my linux & macox laptops.

      • Maybe there's something wrong with your hardware or peripherals. Windows has been rock-solid since at least XP SP2.

        • Some of the laptops dual boot windows & linux so I don't think hardware is the issue.

The other frustrating part is the multiple reboots to update windows and install software whereas in linux boot off a USB key spend a few minutes setting up the install and half an our later and one reboot fully patched system with software installed.

Well I manage a whole bunch of Windows systems and only ever see a BSOD if there's a hardware problem like bad RAM, or the occasional buggy driver.

I'm sure many others here would attest to that.

The old "windows is unstable" view is long outdated.

No way Microsoft. I'm staying with my XP. Plug your laplink cable into your (*)

    • Enjoy having your personal details stolen. Sure hope you don't use that computer for online banking.

Funny how people never appreciated the ongoing costs of technology. This mentality is like "I'm not paying to repair my seat-belts, because the car drives perfectly fine without them".

  • I've had a few perfectly good working computer hardware devices in the past that manufacturers stopped supporting and never provided provided drivers for later operating systems. So was forced to update and throw them out.

I guess this would be the same with older computers running XP. Using older hardware and software. That just won't work on later OS. So they are forced to stick with XP. Just that if there are still bugs and security flaws in XP there won't be any updates to fix. I would have thought most of these would have already been patched by now.

Even if you have to reinstall XP. MS will still have available all the updates to the cutoff date. Or grab software like Autopatcher. If you want to archive all the updates. So you never have to download them, just in case they ever finally become unavailable.
