Hi all,

My fiancee knows I like bargains and sent me a link to their Facebook page. Looks like today only for some cheep cheep chicken!

Ok, maybe the internet is wrong sometimes and the Facebook page was only trolling us to get in and spend today! Ongoing cheap chickens it is :)

I have noticed this price every Tuesday at my local store (Surry Hills), wasn't sure whether it was store specific.

    • Never seen it before, but could have been store specific until lately?

      • +16

It's on special for every Tuesday over the past 6 months as far as I know.

        • +1

Same at all my local Woolies - $8 Chicken Tuesday - has been going for quite a while now.

    • +2

So Woolies has a tight arse tuesday too, for chickens at least.

      • +12

Does the stuffing fall out on the other days?

      • +3

That would explain why the logo above looks like a swirling toilet

    • +1

      Every store.

      Source? I work for woolies.

  • Redfern also does this on Tuesdays.

  • Yep, every Tuesday at my Woolies.

  • +1

If you're a Costco member, $7.99 everyday price.

    • +11

But it costs $6 petrol to go from my place to Costco and back and it only costs $1 to drive to the nearest woolies and back.

      • +12

You know you've reached 'Guru' status when you calculate fuel cost into the total :)

        • +3

Nah thats when you calculate the opportunity cost of working for that period of time, when you were looking for a bargain/ buying stuff. With wages so high in WA it adds up :/

        • +11

True opportunity cost = actual saving, petrol/wear and tear/depreciation, potential lost investment earnings/loss on extra saving, time value financially/emotionally/intrinsically, personal satisfaction level. That's before factoring in Flybuys, credit card points etc. It's no wonder being a bargain hunter is so vexing.

        • +1

If you have to drive that long, chicken is probably cold and needs to be reheated. Thats a few cents of gas right there

    • +1

And I reckon they are much bigger than the pigeons sold at coles and woolies.

  • +14

Every Tuesday Woolies does "Chicken Tuesday". Chickens for $8. I work for Woolies, can confirm :)

      • +4

neg bandwagon again? mafmouf is probably right. and thanks temz for sharing info

      • Why are you even being downvoted…you're right.

    • +1

Well you'd get 10 per cent off as well this week

  • +1 for chicken joke

    • +15

Only 8 buk buks; not bad eh.

  • Yep everyday Tuesday @ woolies!

  • Been on for a while at my two local Woolies.

    • +12

I love eating chalk and cardboard.

    • +6

I don't know what your local woolies does, but ours are always tender.

      • +2

It depends how many people brought chicken on that day and how many chicken shops near your area which effects the quality of roasted chicken in store. Sometime they put the chicken on the hot tray for more than 5 hours and becomes very dried like chicken jerky!

        • +4

Not true dude, I bring out atleast 2 oven loads of delicious roast chickens every Tuesday and were not near any other chicken shop!

And after 4/5 hours you can ask for a discount, even just 20% will make it like $6.40 (bargain depending on the chicken!)

        • +1

Damn forgot about that, Coles and Woolies surely have put a lot of takeaway stores that sell Chicken out of business

        • +6

Who do i talk to about that $1.60 discount?

        • +1

Just ask the supervisor. I normally give a substantial discount after 9pm at our store :)

        • Well my local woolies does a 50% discount on 6 hour old roast chickens. Usually around 5-7pm they sell any roast chicken cooked before midday at that price.

    • Have to agree with Lukian, very happy paying ~$10 for their chicken, just have to go at the right time to get the freshly cooked ones.

  • Does no one eat chicken on Tuesdays? This and KFC's 9 pieces for $9.99!

    • My local KFC doesnt do that deal anymore

Is it still supposed to be active?

      • I believe so, I've seen a few promos about it in Victoria.

    • -1

Gah… if it wasn't for this damn flu I'd go grab some! Don't feel like risking my insurance premium right now.

  • -4

thats expensive. i can buy homebrand and about the same size for $5 at my local woolies. i know its caged but it doesnt say this chicken is free range?

    • +2

I don't think that's cooked though? Never seen a cooked homebrand chicken for sale

      • This is going to be a shocking revelation… but you can actually roast a chicken at home. Like, in your own home!

        We Have The Technology.

        • +4

Seasoning, time, electricity and cleaning. Probably add up to $3.

        • +7

Being generous, power would be about twenty five cents.

If you are using anything more than salt and a tiny splash of oil, you are doing it wrong. At around $1.50/kg, salt will set you back maybe a touch under four cents - but the true ozbargainer would just steal salt packets from maccas.

A tb of oil will probably hit you for about ten cents.

Calculating the cost of your time forgone at some theoretical wage is an economic fallacy if no one was going to pay you for it. You might as well add imputed rent for the oven space in your kitchen or the depreciation on your appliances :)

So, technically, for the ultratightass, it works out, especially since you can regularly get a large size chicken for four bucks :)

(Obviously, this was tongue in cheek. I don't buy woolies chickens because they are terribad)

  • +1

Had their cooked chicken so many times lol, don't think I can have another.

  • +1

My local (Wolli Creek) has been doing this for a while, the chicken has always been tender and juicy. I do have to admit, the Costco ones are better (larger and tastier) but I dont get them often due to the distance.

  • -6

are these the ones that are kept luke warm for hours sweating in a plastic bag? they are like so grody .. grody to the max .. its like really nauseating .. like barf out .. gag me with a spoon .. gross

    • I notice the Woolies near the city have terrible chicken, it falls apart like its really old.

      Out west its pretty good.

Coles is just pure ugh anywhere

What are the margins for the producer and wooles for chicken, always freaks me out when i think of this.

    • +3

That's why they have the time written on them. On days like this we usually have 32+ chickens coming out every hour. Nothings stopping you simply asking at the Deli when the fresh chooks are coming out of the oven.

  • +1

For those in the know it's $8 every Tuesday. In woolies known as "dead chook Tuesday".

  • My local store in ACT had $8 roast chickens on Saturday

  • +7

I usually wait until half an hour until closing - if there are any chickens left over from the 6:30-7pm batch they go for $2 each. If the meat has become dry I keep a jar of teriyaki sauce at home and turn it into chicken teriyaki. 1 chook feeds me for 4 meals.

    • +6

1 chook feeds you for 4 meals!!? Sounds like a smart Chicken! Oh btw, here's a pic I found of you two on a quiet Tuesday night http://imgur.com/0BLfokI

      • Yeah, you can luck out on a very cheap one late in the day. It's a bit like lotto though, more often than not the oven thing is empty.

  • This isn't actually a bargain. It's the case every Tuesday, as multiple people have pointed out.

    • +4

If Lamborghini's went to an everyday price of $1, is it a bargain?

  • shit, I know what I'm eating for dinner tonight then :) its a bargain to me as I never go to woolies on a tuesday so I would not have noticed otherwise!

  • +1

Yeah like dude said you can go just before closing and they always try and sell it cheap so you don't have to wait till tightarse Tuesday, you can choose when you want your arse to be tight

    • +3

Brings back memories… my first job was in the Deli dept of Wooles… they would always put me on the closing shift by myself…

I would always select the best chickens and put them aside, when a family member came to pick me up from work they would be magically reduced to $1!

Having said that chicken we couldn't sell would be thrown out… on slow nights I would mark them all down to $1-2…

      • +1

The good old days when you could do that. Can't really mark chooks that low without bringing up some suspicion from management anymore unless you manually mark it (without RF unit).

        • I got one for free as they needed to clear them off. They were basically giving them away to remaining staff members. I work for woolies.

  • so sick of those roast chicken from woolies and coles now..they're usually about half price if you buy them just before closing…but you gotta stand by to fight with a few bargainers …haha//

    • On that note, anyone know what time they usually discount the chooks at Woolies? HAHA!

      • I've never stayed up late enough to find out, but when I was travelling through WA where their stores close at 5pm, they were discounted at around 4:30pm or so, so I'd say about 30-40 minutes before closing time.

  • +1

Red Rooster is selling chooks for $9.99 at the moment (at least here in WA), I bought one on the weekend and it was only a bit bigger than a pigeon.

Will be going back to Woolies/Coles for my BBQ chooks in the future.

    • My local IGA has "specials" on sometimes when the price on a hot chicken drops to $7.99. And, like magic that day the size of the chickens is halved.

      • +1

Yeah, my local Progressive IGA has 2 pigeons for $13.99 at the moment. Every single time I go there, they never have any. It's always "Oh sorry mate, another 30 minutes until the next batch is ready".

        I have given up…

  • It's called woollies chicken Tuesday

  • Help me choose guys. This or KFC 9 for 9.95 h&s???

    • Depends how unhealthy do you want to get ?

    • +11

Thinks of Old El Paso commercial

Little girl: "Why not have both?"
      Everyone looks at each other

      Fiesta

  • the KFC deal over this anyday, but saying that its a nice change to have this once and awhile, this is a regular at our local woolies each Tuesdays.

  • +2

Sometimes they have 50-70% clearances for their roast chicken towards the end of the day (7-9pm). I've snagged bargains as low as $4.50 for a whole chicken. Of course it's first come first serve.

  • KFC chicken can vary a lot, but the same can be said for woolies. And yeah if you want to wait till end of day for chicken that has been sitting for hours on end, then you can get it even cheaper.

  • +1

Does this include the peri peri chickens?

    PLZ SAY YES

    • +1

I humbly regret to say…it actualy said via the Facebook page it didn't. Sorry to crumble your chicken fantasy dreams in front of you :(

      • Noooo!

        :(

    • I must get the Katy Peri chickens then. They are hot n cold

      • +3

Generous breast portions too, I hear.

      • +3

'Cus it's hot or it's cold,
        It's best when late sold.
        You're in and about,
        The shop's nearly sold out.
I look left and then right,
        Only one chicken in sight!
We fight, we break it up,
I miss out then save up.

        Story of my life :(

  • We are pensioners (I say "registered oldies" when flashing the Seniors Card) and Tuesdays are usually chicken Tuesday from Woolies (Yarrawonga 3730). The $8 is hard to go past. Even the dog gets a bit of it.

That said, lately they have been falling to bits in the bag. Not sure if they breeding them to self destruct or if they are very well cooked. I must have a talk to the local management. Anyone else having them fall to bits?

    • +1

I thought it was location based ie city, now I think its more store based.

Out west the Chicken are bigger and firm.

The ones in the city(Sydney) always falls apart. Maybe they're cooking them longer?

    • When the meat falls off the bone that means it's cooked to perfection! Seriously!

      • For white meat/ chicken…?

        These don't taste as good.

And I've never seen them do pink yet

  • I have only just found out roast chickens are $8 at Woolies on Tuesdays!

Bought one last night at 6pm and the guy told me the deal had been on for the last 6 months… He said they sell twice as many roast chooks on Tuesdays.

Great for making chicken wraps with lettuce and mayo, or sweet chilli.
