User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

    • Added games and updated offer.

      • Great! The offer terms should also be updated on the Meta deal page: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/meta.com

        • Cheers, updated.

          • @neil: It seems like there's more to this than I first realized. With the updated Meta Horizon app you now also have to be friends on Meta first with the person giving out the referral before you can accept the referral link.

So it looks like the whole Meta referral process on here will need to be changed.

At the moment when you click on a referral link and are taken to the Meta game page you are blocked by a message to first connect with the user and that you must follow each other before accepting the link. But there's no way in that message to add the referrer and when you close the message you loose the referral link.

So on here there will need to be a process to first prompt people to connect with each other on Meta, and then get the referral link from them so that they can properly accept their referral.

There is a shareable profile link that can be generated out of the app, not sure if that helps? For example this is what mine looks like: https://horizon.meta.com/profile/pixxelpusher

I've tested it in the old Meta app and it doesn't require becoming Meta friends first, so if using the older app the current process still seems to work.

  • WorldRemit format changed.

    • When I click that on my computer, it sends me to the iOS app store. Is that referral from their app and/or their website?

      • It's from the App

I think WorldRemit is App only now. When you go to their website there is no option to login - https://www.worldremit.com/en

I think I received an email to that effect a few weeks ago as well (that they were app-only now)

        • No worries. Changed to code, expired all referrers and notified.

  • Binance LITE URL checker not working for me. They seem to have dropped the /en/ or /en-AU/ part from their link. Here is the format I just got today. https://www.binance.com/activity/referral-entry/CPA?ref=CPA_{ReferralCode}

The Binance Standard one is working OK.

    • Updated.

  • Hi mods, seems the referral system for "gami chicken and beer" has changed, i just signed up and after clicking the link here on ozbargain there was no 'carried' through referral code.

It seems the link takes to their login in page but than you have to click sign up on their side, so maybe it's lost in this process? Or they have deactivated the referral system for the moment (after signing up i can't find a referral code for myself…)

    • I've expired all the referrals as they are all from last year. Let's see if anyone flags a new format or if they still have a referral system.

  • The updoc link was changed, it is now https://updoc.refr.cc/default/u/(name)

Not sure if you saw my message last week but Meta referrals on here are no longer working with the new Meta Horizon app. The issue is with the new app you now also have to be friends on Meta first with the person giving out the referral before you can accept the referral link.

    • After discussion, this is probably jumping through too many hoops to get this working. We will shut down Meta referrals shortly unfortunately. Let us know if the process changes in the future.

      • Yeah it is a bit of a hassle now. Trying to think outside the box, could it be setup like Zip is on here, where clicking on the link sends a private message to a random referrer? Then in the message back the referrer can give the referee their Meta account link to follow each other, and the game referral link or headset referral link depending on what they need.

Because with Zip it's a kind of similar 2 step process, you need to give each other your mobile numbers (basically be contacts of each other) and then in the Zip app the referral is generated off the mobile number.

So the current game page on here could stay the same, but instead of sending people directly to the Meta site with the referral, it could bring up a message box which will message a referrer for the game. And the same thing could be done for the headset referral.

  • Iherb.com

    Referral format is wrong

    It should be

    http://www.iherb.com/?rcode={refcode}

    • We've confirmed on the website that the link is https://. Where did you get that http:// referral link from?

      • Well, the email I received on sign up has this link with http and not https.
I can share the screenshot too.

        • OK, interesting. Have updated to accept both.

  • The referral link in ozb doesn't like this format
http://simsdirect.refr.cc/<referralname> but i tried it and it seems like my URL works.

I got this error trying to reconfirm my referral

    "Update Referral
Error: Verification error - wrong format"

    • Are you sure it's an http:// and not an https:// link?

  • Globird (https://myaccount.globirdenergy.com.au/linkmanagement) looks like it has swapped back to a link-based system.

I just signed back up with them for Gas (best rates), and on my account management page, they have a Referral Link Management page.

    It says:

View your referral link and share with your friends.
Referring your friends is as easy as copying your referral ink and distributing it to your friends using your chosen platform.
Note: the referral link above will expire on 13-Feb-2025. The expiry date can be extended by returning to this page.

The link is in the format:

    https://quote.globirdenergy.com.au/quote?pcode=refer&ref=%7B…

    • The problem was the links were requiring referrer details in the signup process. Can see the signup process now doesn't ask anything so have switched to links, expired all referrers and notified.

  • I see Flip is still listed in the referrals system. Flip used to have referral codes, but discontinued them a couple of years ago.

    • OK, disabled. There are referrals in there that were added in the past 2 weeks however when testing them I can't see any indication that the referral offer is being applied at sign up.

  • Can you please add referrals for Origin Energy (this is different from the current Origin Spike)

For each friend you bring, you get $150 (inc GST) bill credit, they get $150 (inc GST) bill credit.

    Details here: https://www.originenergy.com.au/campaign/refer-a-friend/

    • Hi moderators, would it be more appropriate to change the way this type of Origin Energy referral is handled on OzBargain?

The Origin Energy referral terms and conditions has the following clause:

      1. You must only share the unique referral code with your friends (the people you know). Your referral code must not be shared with people you don’t know, including on third party sites for example through promotion on public forums outside of your personal network. The referral code also must not be used in paid ads. If your referral code is shared in any of these ways, then no credits will be paid as a result of any New Customers signing up using your referral link.

When I read this, it sounds like the current system of allowing users to paste in their referral links would violate this clause. Would it be more sensible to change the system to a PM-based system, similar to the system OzBargain currently uses for ING (especially considering ING has a clause in their referral terms similar to the one above)?

(Sorry bauser99, I thought it would be more efficient to piggy-back off your existing comment.)

      • Also, if the system is changed to a PM-based system, I think there should be a message on the screen for turning on/off referral PMs that the Origin Energy referral link will display the referrer’s first and last name when opened.

      • At this point, we are going to leave Origin referrals as links. The T&Cs are similar to many others in our system and at this point, we haven't had any reports of Origin cracking down specifically on OzBargainers.

    • This has been added. Origin Energy
