User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

Comments

      • Thank you Neil for the clarification
Can the random link modified to be more random ( like whatever link or code is shown once does not repeat again for next 1000 times or so ?)

        • The random link served is random. The system de-prioritizes users who haven't logged in for a while (e.g. people signing up to OzBargain to stick their code in) vs. users who continue to actively use the site.

        • +1

What about also deprioritizing those who don't post deals in the last 12 months or if not deals, voted on so many deals/comments in the last 12 months?

That will serve as a gentle nudge to support those who post good deals on ozbargain. If the members have enough food to eat then they're more likely to have time to post, search for and describe good deals.

          • @brisdaz: Two points.

            • Given the long history we've had to get our referral system (referral links used to be at bottom of deal posts, posting limits etc.) to where we are now I can say that people will do anything to get their referrals used. This would include posting a nonsense deal to meet say a requirement of 1 deal every 12 months or voting randomly etc.
            • Members are not required NOR does is make a member better or more deserving than another member if they post deals. In fact, its something I see in the comments quite often. Of course, we want to see people posting good deals but it's not a requirement. There are members who only post competitions or post loads of comments on forum posts or just casually use the site. I'm not sure one group should be more revered than another as long we're all participating on OzBargain.
            • @neil: Thanks for your considered reply.

Sorry I didn't add enough explanatory text.

My suggestion was only a starting point. What are all the various ways one can contribute to the community anyway? What behaviour do we want to encourage that is pro-social?

Any method or process to fix a complex system will always have downsides or ways to game the system. It doesn't mean attempting to try isn't warranted, just maybe a long consultation period.

              • @brisdaz:

What behaviour do we want to encourage that is pro-social?

Improving The OzBargain Environment, Acting Respectfully & Goals for 2017

But as for referrals, I think its probably easier to look at it inversely. Those members who don't frequent the site as we currently do and perhaps you can make an argument for those who don't contribute positively to the site (e.g. those who have served penalties especially for referral SPAM). Would that be a carrot enough to encourage those members to contribute positively instead? Not sure but I feel like we'd be getting eerily close to China's social credit system.

    • To answer the opening poster question:

      1. Yes, I've received several Belong referrals - maybe up to $100 value or 5 referrals over a few years. I think I have also received a few Aussie Broadband referrals.

How long have you been in the system? It does take a few months depending on which referrals you have setup.

  • Can Loaded lifting please be added.

    Website: https://loadedlifting.com.au/
Reward: Both referer and referee get $15AUD credit on their account.
Referal URL looks like this: https://i.refs.cc/0zjuSzAL?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJ…

    • Loaded Lifting disabled as the store seems to no longer be open.

  • I’m getting an error when trying to add my Tiger Brokers referral link?

Have been trying for a few weeks and 2 different links but both failed.

    Website: https://tbar.com.au/
Referral link format: https://i.refs.cc/<referral code>?smile_ref=<string representing a JSON object that was base64 encoded and then URL encoded>
    Example link: https://i.refs.cc/Syzosk1X?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJzbWlsZV91aSIsInNtaWxlX21lZGl1bSI6IiIsInNtaWxlX2NhbXBhaWduIjoicmVmZXJyYWxfcHJvZ3JhbSIsInNtaWxlX2N1c3RvbWVyX2lkIjoxMTY2MDM4NDkyfQ%3D%3D

    • T BAR added.

  • What happened to the amaysim referral on OzBargain? I can no longer post the referral link, it just has a checkbox asking my permission for members to send me a direct message to ask for referral link.

  • Could you please add AdBlock Pro for Safari?

3 referrals for 1 year of premium

    https://adblockpro.app/help

    How to use referral program?
You can unlock 1 year of Premium for every 3 friends that you invite. There is no upper limit on amount of years that you can unlock. You can find your invite link and invite status under More tab / Referral. Premium unlocked this way isn't compatible with Family Sharing.

    Sharing link from the app

Hey! Try blocking ads in Safari with AdBlock Pro!

If you download it and use my code F0DE78, you can unlock an extra feature (like blocking of video ads, tracking or cookie prompts)!

    https://adblockpro.app/?r=F0DE78

    • As the benefit is only for the referrer and there have been no deals posted for the site, we won't be adding it at this time.

  • Would you please add Setapp?

Benefit: 1 free month for referral and referrer

    Example URL: https://go.setapp.com/invite/fjibm3dd

    • Setapp has been added.

  • AGL seems to have refer a friend program, not sure if it qualified as seems like it is limited time only.

Take part in our End of Financial Year refer a friend program where you’ll receive up to $50 in bill credit for each referral who signs up online to a new AGL home electricity or gas service before 30 June 2022

Use your promo code and sign up online to get up to $200 in bill credits plus no lock–in contract and no exit fees. That’s $100 for gas and $100 for electricity.

    Example
Visit www.agl.com.au/introduce-a-friend-whatsapp and use this unique code BIA795

    • AGL added.

  • BTC.com.au crypto exchange has made an official announcement that they are closing. Thus, the referral system for them is now redundant. Official notice (if it matters) - https://btc.com.au/blog/an-important-announcement

    Cheers.

  • I'd like to add Brookfarm please. I'm having trouble adding my request. Could I please have assistance. Thank you

    • Could I please have Brookfarm added to the referral program. Details are -

      Business Name: Brookfarm
      Referral Link Template: https://i.refs.cc/{code}
Deal: Referrers and Referees get $10

      Thank you!

  • The Chefgood referral offer has changed. Referees and referrers get $40 off next order (previously $25). Thanks!

  • Bamboo now has a referral code rather than a link. Could you please change this. Many thanks!

    • Can you provide a screenshot of what it looks like? I need to know the number of digits, case sensitivity etc.

  • I would like to suggest adding Trusted Housesitters. It’s a paid service where on signing up, if you are referred by a member, you receive 25% off the annual joining fee.

    The template is https://www.trustedhousesitters.com/refer/{code}

    • TrustedHousesitters added. Does the referrer get anything?

      • Thought I could help. Found this on the Trusted House Sitters website regarding their referral program -

"Each existing member has their own unique Refer A Friend link which can be shared with friends and family who are interested in joining the community. This link is only valid for new members and when it is used by a new member they will receive a 25% discount on their membership fee, and then the existing member will earn 2 free months on their membership - a win-win!"

So referrer gets 2 months free on their existing membership.

Link to referral program info - https://support.trustedhousesitters.com/hc/en-gb/articles/36…

Also thanks heaps for adding my Brookfarm referral info! :)

        • Thanks. Updated.

      • There's no-one in the system?

        • Correct.

  • Another suggestion - PureProfile.

    Referral link template:

    https://referral.pureprofile.com/referrer/{code}

    • Survey sites like Pureprofile, Octopus Group, Purkle etc. are not permitted on Ozbargain and there are no deals for them, so we won't be adding it, sorry.

  • Another suggestion: Askable.

    Referral template is https://askb.co/{code}

    • No.

  • Last suggestion: Mad Paws petsitting.

Example of a referral code is:

    https://vrlps.co/guZ59dh/cp

  • Kiehls no longer has a referral program - have confirmed it with customer service.

  • Oz Bargain West Fund referral generator just gives a 6 digit code. They want the name of the person referring also. How do I go about getting one?

    • You can contact us in TWAM and let us know what number you used when you applied for the Insurance product. We can then send a private message to that user to let them know that you were the person that used their referral code and they can contact you via PM.

      • thanks, will do now

      • Link is for moderator but found it anyway

Should a referral to West Fund send a new private message in the future?

  • Sukin referrals say "Do not add anything after ?" and "Please enter full referral link", which I a bit confusing - not sure if I am supposed to enter the full (very long) link or not.

    • Have edited for clarity. Should be:

Please enter full referral link without the ?smile_ref part.

  • Can Jamie Kay(kids clothing) be added please: https://jamiekay.co.nz/

    URL: https://a.marsello.com/l/615589ea4e2de10e3c29d64d

    Benefits:
Get a 10% off Voucher when they join and you will receive your points when your friend makes their first purchase.

  • Looks like Linode have modified their referral link slightly.

It's now in the format https://www.linode.com/lp/refer/?r=c43c6ccda8c28b2a002acc122… (with the /lp/refer/ added in compared to the current verification format.)

The referral terms ($100, 60-day credit referree, $25 non-expiring credit for referrer) appear to be unchanged.

    • Changed to accept new format. The old links still seem to work so eventually they will be phased out. Referral appears to be $50 now.

      • Cheers. FWIW, the old Links appear to go to a slightly more generic $50 credit. The new links give $100.

        • Ah ok. Have expired all links in system (except yours), notified users, changed to only accept the new format, and changed to $100 credit.

  • Could you please add Sans Drinks?

    https://sansdrinks.com.au/

    Referral link example: https://i.refs.cc/r03rtjUy?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJ…

Presumably the referral link format is: https://i.refs.cc/

Benefit: $5 for referrer and $5 coupon for first order for referee

    Thanks

  • Could we get Leaptel added?

    www.leaptel.com.au

The referral link is located in the members section -> Referral

Referral link example: https://members.leaptel.com.au/base/manage/customers/referra…. Presumably the code is after customer_id=.

Benefit: $50 credit for the referrer and $50 credit for the referee

  • Hi guys. I think the format of Binance referral links have changed.

When I go onto Binance and try to refer someone, the generated link looks like this:
    https://www.binance.com/en/activity/referral/offers/claim?re….

But the OzB site is expecting the referral to look like this:
    https://accounts.binance.com/en/register?ref=UNDNW7H0

    • The first link if you follow it is showing LITE (and Standard with with a seperate button).

      LITE seems to be:

      • Claim your 100 USDT cashback voucher
      • Deposit more than $50 within 14 days after registration

Standard which is your 2nd link, if followed, shows 10% off trading fees.

Have added LITE to Binance. Standard seems to still be the same.

  • How about an option to re-use the same link you entered when it expires? Just so i don't have to go back and find the link again!

    • The whole point of the expiry is to ensure that everyone checks if your link or code has expired. Many stores change referral systems, links or codes with no particular reason at all. On the other side, users can say change ISPs, electricity companies, etc and their referrals get disabled by the company creating non-function referrals for OzBargainers looking for a signup deal.

Sometimes the formats of the referrals change which get reported in this thread after users try to enter their referral in our system. So yeah, a lot of reason to keep the system with some expiry (mostly set at 1 year).

  • Hi Mods, I can't seem to get naked wines to save my referral link, says wrong format.

copied directly from naked wines profile
    https://www.nakedwines.com.au/invite/keone-little

  • I can't seem to add my ECO Modern Essentials link.

Got it from the rewards tab on site, removed everything after the '?'

    Says invalid format

    • Just to add onto this, the referrer still gets $10 off coupon, but referee now gets $20 off coupon (instead of 10% off)

    • What link are you entering? Instruction is:

Please enter full referral link without the ?smile_ref part.

So you shouldn't be including the ?.

    Localcart.com.au (grocery shopping)

    Both get $10 each discount

  • The website and format for dinner ladies has changed as well as the amounts. You have to opt in to referring and it seems to generate a link after requesting one, not sure if unique and stops working after 24 hours or something so need to be freshly generated each time.

This is the new format, I just generated this link

    https://www.dinnerladies.com.au/a/refer-a-friend/redeem/ysdn…

Referral amounts are now $25 each

  • Hi there,
