User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Related Pages

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

Could you please add Ampol Fuel?

    Referral details:
Introduce a friend to the app and when they first fill up, you'll be automatically rewarded with 6c per litre^ off your next fuel purchase.

    Referral format:
Get FuelPay® to pay for fuel
Hello, Keep moving with an easier way to pay. Save 6c per litre on your next 3 fills with FuelPay®.

Enter this code during registration: XXXXXXXX
    Download the app: https://www.ampol.com.au/service-stations/ampol-app

    Referral format example:
Enter this code during registration: WGB4Q7U5

    • Ampol has been added.

  • Could you please add Get Paid In Bitcoin?

Great little company that allows people to get a portion of their wage paid in bitcoin.

    https://getpaidinbitcoin.com.au/

    Referral Format: https://portal.getpaidinbitcoin.com.au/register?referralCode…

Referral Details: Referrer gets AUD $0.50 for every transaction the referee makes - "Every transaction they make will give you a referral bonus. It's also paid out in bitcoin. What could be better?"

    • As there is no benefit for the referee and there have been no deals posted, we won't be adding it to our system at this time.

  • Could you please add PD insurance? I called them and they advised me of their Refer a Friend program. I asked for a code and then they emailed me the referral code to use along with some instructions:

    1. The URL format for the referral link: From my brief search, it appears to be accessible by phone only. From emailed instructions: "Tell them to call us on 1800 776 473 to get a quote and mention the referral code"
    2. Instructions to get the referral link: I couldn't find this online - perhaps it is also accessibly by requesting a referral code manually.
    3. Benefit for the referrers and referees: From the email: "If they purchase a policy, they get an extra 10% off their premium and you get a $100 Visa gift card (one for every person you refer)"

"*Terms & Conditions: 1. For each policy term, you can get a $100 gift card for each friend who signs up with PD Insurance with a maximum three friends. 2. You'll get your gift card 45 days after your friend's policy commences and as long as it is not cancelled. 3. You qualify for the gift card only if your friend takes out a new PD Insurance comprehensive car insurance policy. 4. Your friend will get up to 10% off their annual base premium only."
    • PD Insurance has been added.

      • Thanks neil. There is no instructions/benefits on the referral link that has been added, so it's unclear how people will use it - is it permissable to post this as a deal?

        • There is no instructions/benefits on the referral link that has been added

It shows up once someone puts a code in the system. It's now showing.

is it permissable to post this as a deal?

          Yes, Deal Posting Guidelines: Referrals:

Can I post a deal for the Referral offer itself?

If the retailer offers a referral program, you may post it as a deal (e.g. signup to ABC site via referral code and earn $10 credit) if all of the following conditions are met:
          The referee also earns credit.
The current offer has NOT been posted as a deal previously.
It's a limited time referral offer or it's a new addition to the OzBargain referral system (added less than 7 days ago).

          • @neil: Thanks. I'll post it as a deal after the 7 days has elapsed.

            • @Brickles: You need to post it before 7 days, not after. The guidelines are to prevent entrepreneurial people going through one by one and reposting referral offers (over 500+).

  • The referral code section for these sites are broken due to them changing their link formats. Can you please update these? Thanks!

      Don't see any indication of it working. What's the new format? Currently set as fbuy.io/eau/{ReferralCode}

  • I am unable to enter the Amex Qantas discovery card referral code. It says it's invalid. But the one on the Amex website looks like the below(Doesn't have XLINK=…)
    http://amex.com.au/refer/xxxxxx?CPID=99999999

    • As per the instructions:

You only need to enter 'myC0De' and nothing else - don't include the "?" or anything after it.

So just the xxxxxx part, not CPID or XLINK or anything else after the ?

  • Can you add SnapSendSolve to the list?

Referral code is in format https://services.snapsendsolve.com/accounts/referral?code=xx…
    (eg https://services.snapsendsolve.com/accounts/referral?code=3H…)

    From their email:
Refer your friends, family members or neighbours and you and the person you refer will go in the running to win one of 10 x $50 gift cards each month.
    How to enter:
    1. Refer a friend in the app
You can do this after submitting or rating a report or by clicking ‘Refer Friends' in the ‘More’ section of the app.
    2. Select the friend you wish to refer
The more friends you refer to Snap Send Solve, the more times you will be entered into the competition.
    3. WIN!
We’ll be in touch if you’re selected as a winner. We draw prizes every month so keep your referrals up for more chances to win!

    • Snap Send Solve has been added.

      • Snap Send Solve referral links from the app appear to now be in a new format. My old referral expired and I can't add the new link. Can you please update?

New format is: https://me.snapsendsolve.com/refer/207ozm-1-0 (where 207ozm-1-0 seems to be the unique component)

Update: The old format links still seem to work but they are no longer what the app generates for a referral.

        • Updated.

Why do referral codes expire? And in 86 days? Where do these arbitrary things come from? We donate time and effort to post deals and get a few paltry referrals but you really do make it hard to want to bother.

    • By default all stores expire after 365 days to keep codes fresh and to also alert us to any changes within the system.

Without knowing what store you referring to, often a short expiry of 90 days is typical of stores that change their referral links/codes often leading to broken referrals. I only see 2 store referrals in your account, one for which the store is set to 6 months and the other 1 year. Monthly paid stores like ISPs, Health Insurance where people switch over are generally set for 6 months.

      • +1

Even at 6 months for an ISP - why is that? The referral code is set to a customer for the life of their continuous engagement with the ISP - should it not be up to the member to determine if any when these codes need to be changed?

        • Even at 6 months for an ISP - why is that?

From my experience of probably going through close to 1000 audits on stores, we end up with stores where the referrals are broken. So people looking to sign up will struggle to find a working code/link. It would be great when referrers move over to another ISP, Health Insurance, Mobile Plans that they think to remove their referral from the system but that just doesn't happen. We end up with deads links or worse the links or codes work but the referee doesn't get the credit.

In any case, I'm not quite sure why it is such an imposition to add your code back in once every 6 months. A notification is sent to your notifications button on OzBargain or you can get a notification email.

can you please at Honey the coupon checking browser extension
They also do some cashback and the referrer gets 500 gold, 800 gold gets you a $10 gift card.
I'm not sure what the referee benefit is. But it doesn't cost anything.

    • Honey is already in our system.

  • There's no text input field for Private Internet Access

    • It's a private message referral. So a user looking for a referral would PM you out of the pool of referrers in the system.

      • Thanks, is there a specific reason for that since PIA does have a referral link

        • As per this comment:

you can refer someone by typing their First name and email address in the invite section
(need to send private message for account owner to provide these information)

      • not working for me. the format for my referral url is ref.nordvpn.com but the ozbargain format is www.ref.nordvpn.com. i tried adding www to my url but it's still saying it's the incorrect format.

        • I've changed the referral to accept a referral code instead of the full link. Please try again.

  • Can I multiple referral codes for the same provider (eg Belong Mobile)? Or only one per OzBargain account? Thanks!

    • Only 1 referral code per provider, per person/account.

  • Hi Mods, the Afterpay referral program appears to have been extended to 31/12/2021 (see link below). The OzB “grey box” referral details needs to be updated?

    • What are the benefits for the referrer and referee?

      • Ah, I wasn't actually 100% on this but see it's lifetime 10% of escrow fees to referrer of referee's transactions. No benefit to referee so ineligible for here I guess.

  • UNBRK

    • What does the referee get?

  • CovaU

There is no format or link, there is only a form https://covau.com.au/refer/
It asks for their First Name, Last Name, Email, and Phone Number so it's likely it'll have to be done manually.

I believe the referrer receives a $50 gift card and the referee $50 account credit.

    Thanks!

    • That's been added. CovaU

  • Merged from Powershop Referral Link Changed?

    Hello,

The OzBargain referrals page used to say something like
"Include the URL but remove everything after the ?p=981" or something?

When did this change? Did it change? What is a correct Powershop referral link?
If it did change, can we have people notified somehow?

    Thanks

    • NOTE: you can now put in a URL with EITHER code - with or without the ?P thing and it saves? So I'm confused, which is it - the site engine accepts both?

    • What is a correct Powershop referral link?

Template when you add your link:

      powershop

      https://secure.powershop.com.au/r/{ReferralCode}

When did this change? Did it change?
If it did change, can we have people notified somehow?

Nothing changed. Just changed to full URL from adding the individual code.

you can now put in a URL with EITHER code - with or without the ?P thing and it saves? So I'm confused, which is it - the site engine accepts both?

      Either link will work.

      • Neil, thanks for the reply. So I'm not crazy, you used to have to remove that end bit.

        Appreciate it!

        • Either link works and should be fine but best to put in without the ?p=.

          • @neil: Keep the ? or ditch the ?

            • @hamwhisperer: Without the ?.

              • @neil: Sweet, lost 2 clicks:/

                Thanks

                • @hamwhisperer: Just to reiterate, I've opened your link with the ?, without the ?, and with the ?p=981. All load correctly and say that both the referrer and referee will be credited. Assuming we believe the message on screen from Powershop, then it doesn't matter what format you put it in.

  • Why is the sleeping duck referral via PM rather than via link?

    • See an earlier comment in this thread:

Sleeping Duck have now updated their terms and conditions (in the link above) to say that referrals through OzBargain are not valid. I checked recently and my SleepingDuck referral code has been clicked over 200 times, but I’ve never got any rewards from SD. I clicked my own link and found that they have marked the code as invalid. I ran into this same issue when I was trying to use other people’s SD referrals from OzB, they were all marked as invalid. Maybe the SD referrals should be removed?

      So we switched to PM:

We've switched the system to PM (notified all users) as to not expose the links. They also have a cap on how many people you can refer so by using PM, the referrer should check to see if their code is valid.

  • Everyplace on the stove page says $30 off box for the referree but it’s showing for me as $60 off the first free boxes ($60 total over the 3 boxes not each). Can this be updated? I’m unsure if it’s just a short term promo or updated forever

    • Everyplace on the stove page

Do you mean the EveryPlate store?

I've updated it. Seems like only some of the links have the 3 box promo.

      • I certainly do. Don’t know how I wrote that without noticing. Should have been everyplate store. Thank you!

  • Native Deodorant now uses this URL format for refer a friend: http://rwrd.io/[code]

Can it please be updated? Thanks for all your hard work

    • Updated. Thanks. Native Deodorant

      • edit

Please disregard, worked when I modified the URL to https://

        • Oops, fixed.

        • Native Deodorant now disabled due to no referrers in the system.

  • Is there an issue with superloop referrals?

I just got notified mine expired, but it wont let me put in a new one (Error: Verification error - invalid URL link). I tried just the code, copied the url in the example and added my code, with and without 'plan=', many variations etc.

This is what they give you from the customer portal,
https://members.superloop.com/signup/referral?referral_code=… is what they give me

    Thanks

    • Fixed.

      • Thanks.. just tried again, still getting verification error.

        • Sorry, now it's fixed.

          • @neil: Thanks, working great now!

  • Grrrrrr

    • As per the OP:

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

  • Can you please add Field Agent https://app.fieldagent.net/

Referrer gets equivalent of 10% of the amount the new agent signed up earns (up to $10 in total)

  • The Iconic link on my RAF page is showing the format https://theiconic-web.app.link/e/xxxxxxxxxxx

Can the verification code please be updated.

    • The links are different on the app from the website. I've put a note to use the website only and not the app for referral links.

      • The above format is from the website, not app.

        • We've tested on 3 accounts from the website (Edge & Chrome) and we're seeing the other format. What's the page that you are seeing the theiconic-web.app? When I go to https://www.theiconic.com.au/customer/referafriend/ I see thei.to referral links.

          • @neil: Edge and Safari both bring up the original link above.

            • @Chuppa: Alright, I still have no idea how you are getting that different link but I've setup the system to accept either theiconic-web.app.link or thei.to. The codes at the end of both links are fortunately the same.

There is a referral for https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/oculus.com for purchase of a Quest 2

Benefit- AUD $47 in Oculus Store Credit for referrer and referee

    Terms - https://www.oculus.com/legal/referral-program/

Would need to be by PM - looks like you have to be willing to connect with someone on Facebook messenger to send the referral, also the link changes for every referral, you get 5 per month.  I am getting a pop up banner in the oculus app to share the link, and also a little diamond icon in the top right corner.

    • Oculus added.

This shows up on game deals too so I think some people see it and get confused. Also others don't dont want to use facebook - be nice to highlight the fine print up front to save some time. Is it possible to update the referral box text to something like:

$47 in Oculus Store Credit for referrer and referee on purcase of new devices. Must exchange codes through Facebook messenger. See terms
        https://www.oculus.com/legal/referral-program/

        Cheers!
