    This should work … Deposit $2k end of month for 1 day. Then withdraw back to previous bank. Then rinse repeat. Seems no need to keep money in the account looking at the Ts & Cs if you just want the bonus 10k points.

    • +3

      Thats a great idea.

      • Does it have to be $2000 in one go? Or can be $500*4 in a month?

        And how far (how many actual miles flown) does 10,000 QFF points take you from Syd to Asia, for instance?

        • I think depending on what you spend your points on, the conversion rate is around 0.5-1.5 cents per point, so this is about $100 worth of points (very roughly, but should be in the ballpark).

        • No. SYD to Singapore is 30000 points each way. 8000 points gets you Syd-MEL or 6400 on Jetstar Syd-Mel - plus taxes

        • $500*4 is ok, all they ask for is $2000 as the aggregate sum of all deposits by the the last business day of a calendar month.

          Which I think means you can also just use the same $500 to deposit and withdraw 4x a month…

        • I see. Maybe I was looking at the virgin points thing, or maybe it was only when you cash in points for gift cards, toasters, etc instead of flights.

        • Where can I get SYD to SIN for 30,000 one way. They are all above 80,000 for me?

    • I thought about this once with another bankwest account with similar terms. Don't know about transferring from another bank. But transferring money from one account to the other doesn't count for the 2k minimum.

      • +1

        I don't think that's the case adgum. I have a Hero transaction that requires a $2k minimum deposit. My salary was deposited into a Bankwest student account, and then transferred to the Hero and it met their requirements.

      • Same. I have a Bankwest Zero transaction account, and when I transfer $2k from one of my other Bankwest accounts to that account, it fulfills the $2k minimum to keep it fee free for that month.

  • Might not be applicable to those that already have a transaction account ?

    "New Bankwest transaction account holders only"

    • Yes thats stated in the body of my post. I only have a homeloan with them.

      • +1

        Nice ! I already have a Transaction account with them - not too appealing for me.

          Im on a Qantas point collection spree lately. Im trying to get myself the 288.000 points for that elusive First class flight to Los Angeles. Only last month i got the Citi signature card which came with 80.000 bonus points and paid a $295 fee for it, and an ANZ platinum FF card with 40000 bonus points for a $195 fee. Ive just hit 265000 points!! One more little push and Im there. These elusive seats are available if you book them 353 days in advance. Just did a search right now and business and first seats are freely available for march 2015. This rewards flight will cost about $1000 in taxes, but its the only way Ill sample a $15k-20k Qantas first class flight to USA!!!

          These same reward seats that Im looking at qantas are pricing between $7500-$10000 ONE WAY SO $15000 - $20000 RETURN.

        • +2

          You can get the HSBC card for another 20 000 points. Ive heard from quite a few people that if you ring and try and cancel the card after youve used the points they will offer to refund the fee:-

          https://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/qantaspoints

        • and the qantas amex card

        • Melbbargainchaser77 will you be stopping over in LAX or flying straight back?

        • No it will be a stopover. Currently just for the sake of an example QF93 and QF94 both show available first class seats for the dummy dates i put in of 17/24 March 2015

        • Already have the Qantas AMEX card.

          If i could give 4 referals that will earn me 20000 points!! and 8000 points to the people I refer I think!!

        • +1

          You should have bought discounted AA/US Airways points and redeem for almost zero YQ.

        • speaking of zero YQ expedia brazil got me return QF MEL-SIN in Y last
          year sub $350

        • I also have used the Alaskan airlines trick purchased 55k point for $1100USD x 2 when on sale, which was good for a QF J redemption MEL-LAX, but Alaskan no longer allow purchases on non US credit cards ;(

        • Is that 288,000 points one way or return? And where do you book that through, is it through the Classic Awards or Any Seat awards?

        • Its return for a classic. But because there is confirmed availability, it can be booked as a MASA, through the call centre. But QF in all its wisdom is winding back these MASA awards at the end of June. MASA are great as they are literaly an ASA at classic point levels, with the difference being the attract status credits and earn points, and are refundable/changeable unlike classic.

        • I see, I just had a look and it's over a million points for a return to LA, so are you saying you need to ring up and get it booked as a 'MASA' in order to get it for that point price?

        • +1

          Yes, through the call centre is the only way it can be done, but the flight must be showing as an available classic seat on the QF search engine, and only flights on QF metal qualify. And this nifty little feature will be no longer available after June 30.

          If you are looking to take advantage of this offer there is a dedicated line for it: 1300 366 587

        • +1

          Thanks! I might check it out. :)

        • And another great benefit is you dont get slugged the full hideous YQ component that a classic award is hit with.

        • So if I call that number, do I need to ask for anything in specific? Is there a codeword? I wish I knew this last year… I had almost half a million points and spent them on economy flights I booked through the website.

        • No there is no codeword. Just make sure you sound like you know what its all about, and firstly confirm yourself that classic seats for the cabin class you want are available and are only on QF metal. If you quote specific dates and flight numbers to the operator knowing they are available, they will be very helpful. Just tell them when they answer your needing assistance in booking a Marginal Any Seat Award. As long as those seats are available in classic format, they cant knock you back. If you hold status with QF they will be more helpful.

        • +6

          Don't refer to a "marginal" Any Seat Award as the call centre don't use this term.
          You need to ask for an Any Seat Award in Uniform (U) class for Business, or Papa (P) class for First. These are the Classic Award fare buckets.
          Also be firm when they try to charge the phone assistance fee - you can't book these via the website so no fee should be charged.

        • Excellent advice ;)

        • nice!

        • Hi MelbBargainChaser77, I just checked Syd to LA, why it's 38000ish points? I thought it'll consume fixed points?

  • +2

    10,000 pts = $50?

    • It depends on what you spend them on.

      $20000 first class return flight to LAX for 288000 points

      Someone thats good at maths please come up with a point to dollar value!

      • Ok Ive just figured it out I think Im correct, but I stand to be corrected

        A $20000 first class return Qantas airfare to Los Angeles requiring 288000 points equates to 6.9cents ($20000/288000)per point

        Therefore 10,000 points in this exchange is worth $694

        ??

        However the Qantas page is also showing a "sale" price of this fare for about $15000 so at the sale price the point are worth ($15000/288000) = 5.2c each
        So 10,000 qantas points for this fare is = $520

        • +2

          Subtract the ~$1k in taxes/fees/charges from the airfare so at normal price it would be 19000/288000= 6.6c per point, and at sale price it would be 14000/288000= 4.9c per point.

  • Just DO some Maths first!!!

    With Bankwest's Hero transaction account you get 3% interest

    With this you get 0.01% interest

    So you are trading 3% interest per dollar for 1 QFF point.

    With 3100 points giving a $30 voucher that's about 1%

    So not an account for parking money, need to keep the money flowing thru to get best advantage of the bonus offer.

    Plus you need to keep the account open for up to 5 months to get the bonus 10000 (not 3 months)

    Qantas Points will be credited to the account holders Qantas Frequent Flyer account within a 2 month period after satisfaction of these conditions. Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account must be open at time of Qantas Points payment and linked to a valid Qantas Frequent Flyer account to receive bonus Qantas Points.

    On pure balances if you kept $5000 in the account everyday for a year you would get 7120 points = say $70 in vouchers
    $5000 at the Bankwest Hero Transaction account alternatively would give you 3% = $150

    With this card I read it as you getting 5 points per purchase (eligible ones only) but catch is how many dollars you spend on a purchase. Eg $100 on a credit card that gives 1 point per dollar ($1 per $100) is better than getting just 5 points. (in the vicinity of 5c) Or $5 back with ING, or even $2 after the ING intro period.

    Needs a lot more "calculation" on benefits vs alternatives

    Except of course if you want QFF points for First class flights and that's another calculation.

    • +2

      From my understanding money doesnt need to be parked in this account as long as $2000 is deposited per month.

      Im happy to do that for 5 months to get the 10000 QFF points, as this is worth at least $500 in value based on my calculation to get me closer to that First class fare im after. But yes everyone should do their own calculation to see if this deal is worth it for them!

    • +1

      I don't think the money needs to be kept in the account. There is no ref to having to 'keep' the funds there. So just t/f $2k then 24 hrs later take it out. So worst case for 3 months money is out of yur hands for 3 days. And you just recycle the same $2k in and out.

      • +2

        If you are just looking for the 10000 points you are absolutely correct.

        Open it for the 5 months then close. But except for those wanting FF points for flying, on a dollar basis those 10000 points are worth at max $100

        Is it worth the effort? Its a personal decision. Some will walk miles, sell their name etc for 10c free product. Opening and closing bank accounts and setting up the transfers does take time, watching you aren't leaving money in their for a few extra days etc.

        We are bargain hunters here, a different breed. I was just giving info for people to use so they can make a better decision. I had done it for my understanding so I thought I would share what I had done.

        • +4

          Best value (IMHO) for QF points is to spend on QF Business flights or upgrades. An international Business (or 1st) flight will redeem for abut $0.05 per point. But again each to their own and YMMV

        • Rocky, the 10000 points are worth at least $500 on my maths for the flights ive highlighted, so $100 max isnt quite correct.

        • But except for those wanting FF points for flying, on a dollar basis those 10000 points are worth at max $100

          guess you missed this line… :)

    • 3% on the first $5K , 0% on every penny more.

      This may or may not be of releveance to your point but it's a very important thing to remember. Offloading the extra dollars to another account (automatically or regularly) is a must if you're managing your money properly.

  • +1

    Too much math for a Monday morning

    Good deal if you do what someone said up to and just "recycle" $2000 for the 3 months. Collect points and leave the account empty.

    • I wouldnt be leaving the account empty after the points have been collected. Id shut it down, as I think monthly fees are involved if you dont deposit a minimum 2k per month.

      • May be auto t/f $1 dollar each month after the first 3 months until QF points credit to avoid fees. Then take out the $2 or $3 to buy more stuff from meritline or banggood or some other random surprise package company

        • You have to deposit $2000 per month to avoid any fees. Unfortunately their website doesn't say "OR $x per month".. I'm sure it's in their tiny print somewhere but I'd say it's there :(

    • and start paying fees unless you close it

      EDIT: and the account needs to stay open for "up to 2 months" after the conditions are met for the bonus.

      • +1

        so the point is keep the account active for 3,4,5 or 6 months, ensuring the 2k is deposited monthly and once the 10000 points pop up in the QF account, get rid of the bankwest account

      • +4

        correct me if I were wrong, there will be a $10 fee if you close your account — 'Close an account $10.00' from their 'Your Guide to Banking Fees' PDF

        http://www.bankwest.com.au/library/pdf/PDS_20040121-160125.p…

        • Yes it appears possible that there is a $10 fee to close account, I think if withdrawing money and closing the account at the same time.
          PDF states "Funds outward: Close an account $10.00; Others Free".
          But if there is a zero balance and I let the account go dormant (not use it again) then I don't know how they will get any fees from me.

        • +2

          But if there is a zero balance then I don't know how they will get any fees from me

          Wouldn't they then charge you their $6 fee for not meeting the minimum deposit requirements?

          Banks CAN still charge you fees to your account even if it has no money in it and for as long as it is technically open.

          You could potentially go into negative balance and the bank is allowed to recover this money from you. Failure to pay could result in a negative mark on your credit file.

          I am not 100% sure on the above and would love to hear views from others.

    Points are worth $66 if you redeem a retail gift voucher.

  • +1

    The thing that most interests me about this product is

    no overseas ATM withdrawal fees (charged by Bankwest)**

    Could be a good alternative to Citibank plus. Even more- they have a no forex fee credit card too, which may make bankwest a one stop shop for international transactions.

    • Any idea how this compares to Citibank Plus for the fee free foreign ATM ? Is it the same ?

      Update: Never mind, just saw reply on that.

  • +5

    Could be a good alternative to Citibank plus.

    I disagree as this Bankwest product charges 2.95% currency conversion fee (on both purchases and cash withdrawals). Citibank charges ZERO

    I agree that their credit card is a good alternative to something like 28 degrees because it has no currency conversion fees and also comes with free insurances BUT you must be able to qualify for Platinum in order to get zero currency conversion fee option. If you can, their Platinum Zero Mastercard is probably the best credit card you can currently get in Australia. If you can't qualify for Platinum, stick with 28 degrees.

    • platinum Zero Mastercard does sound good, cheers for the pointer

    • Sorry for probably asking a stupid question but what's the major advantage of Platinum Zero Mastercard in comparison to 28 degrees one ?
      I've got both but use 28 degrees most of the time.
      Thanks.

      • +4

        Free travel insurance which the 28degrees doesn't have.

  • Could you also cascade deposits into your partners account effectively double dipping

    • Don't see why not :)

  • Disregarding the 10000 bonus points for the Qantas account. How does it compare to the Bankwest Rewards Transaction account? http://www.bankwest.com.au/personal/everyday-accounts/everyd…

    • +1

      I think the Qantas one is better, because if you get the Rewards Transaction a/c and you redeem points to cash/giftcard that would be about 240-300 (~0.4%) points to a dollar, whereas with the QF FF it's about 150 points to a dollar (~0.7%); bear in mind you could redeem for a flight instead (higher value). But either way you would need to do hundreds of transactions… I think so far the better one is ING Direct's cashback, it's almost instant, and it's the highest return per dollar (2% ongoing rate).

  • Slightly OT question, but do you still receive reward points if you make a purchase using a platinum QFF rewards card that's in credit? Say for example you want to buy something worth $20k, your credit limit is only $7k, but you have the $20k in cash, can you load the $20k on to the CC in advance, pay with it and earn pts on the full $20k?

    • +1

      Yes Ive done this. I purchased 7 x tix to Europe for my parents and friends they were travelling with on my card with funds I deposited prior to making the purchase as my credit limit on that card wasnt enough, and I got the full serving of points. This was on a Qantas Amex Discovery card.

      • -1

        Some credit card companies consider it as Money Laundering and don't allow it.

        • Perhaps thats the case. Maybe if they see repeat history of this behaviour. I only did it once and it worked.

        • -1

          How it that considered money laundering? Since when are you not allowed to pay money into your credit card until you have the purchases on the account?

          If so, alot of us are guilty of money laundering on 28 degrees and citibank plus accounts!!

  • Can I open up 2 accounts (for me and wife) and allocate all the point to my QFF membership? I couldn't see the explanation in the T&C. That's like 20k points lol.

    • +4

      I dont know if they will deposit 2 sets of 10k points to the 1 QFF account, but why dont you just transfer the points from your wifes account to yours after Bankwest have allocated them?

      • Good idea! Thanks mate!

  • +2

    I've got this message while applying :(

    "Your session cannot be continued.

    This site is currently experiencing some technical problems. Please try again later."

    Has the site been OZbargained???

    • worked for me 5mins ago.

  • does anyboy know what/if the fee is if you do not continue with the $2k a month?
    no mention of what it is if you do not. deposit $2k.

    • +1

      $6 each month you dont deposit $2000.

      • if your balance is $0, is it safe to assume there are no fees?
        cant see it it writing on their PDS but its standard with other banks, or at least with Qantas cash card.

        • If you have deposited $2k in that month, otherwise you will get overdraft

        • Agret, How would they get the fees/overdraft out of me if I just let the account go dormant with a zero balance? Thanks for any info.

  • "5 Qantas Points per eligible purchase completed with your Debit MasterCard"

    What counts as an eligible purchase?

    • That's what I'm wondering too. Can't find an explanation anywhere. Though if it was for standard purchases 5 points per purchase is extremely poor (unless you buy something that costs less than $5 :P)

      I thought it was 5 points per dollar :( which would be incredible!

      • +1

        I initially thought it was 5 points per dollar also…then I read it again ;(

        • so I assume "eligible purchases" are stuff like everyday shopping, paying bills and online purchases? no explanation on their site hence I asked (no need for the neg really).

        • +2
        • I also thought it was 5 points per $ but it is per transaction so not good at all.

    • +3

      what if i split payment of $0.01 at the self checkout register say in Coles? an $1 would then be done it 100 times, 100 x 5 qantas per transaction = 500 qantas points per $1. that will be unreal! What do you guys think?

      • Qantas Points are accrued on all eligible purchases made using your Card. Qantas
        Points are not accrued on:
        • cheques;
        • BPAY® payments;
        • cash-out transactions at any merchant;
        • payments from the Account made without your Card (eg payments to another bank account using the “pay anyone” function);
        • interest charges;
        • bank fees and charges;
        • transactions we decide are disputed due to being fraudulent or which involve an abuse of your Account or any Card;
        • foreign exchange purchases;
        • a withdrawal of cash at an ATM which is not processed by MasterCard® as a ‘cross border’ transaction;
        • travellers cheques;
        • all purchases for gaming or gambling transactions including gambling chip purchases and online gambling purchases;
        • Government charges (other than GST payable in connection with the purchase of goods or services on which you accrue Points);
        • Business Related Expenses; and
        • any other transactions which from time to time may be excluded by us.

        They might be able to catch you out on the last bullet point, but I'd say go for it! If you can find a 1 cent purchase online that'd be even better than standing at the Coles checkout putting an item through 1 cent at a time.

    Just had it confirmed that for existing Bankwest transaction holders you won't get the 10,000 points (I saw that the OP stated they were an existing customer):

    ^ You must deposit at least $2,000 per month (e.g. your salary) for the first 3 months, to be eligible for this offer. Excludes existing Bankwest transaction account holders. The Qantas Points offer is subject to change. Offer ends 31 May 2014.

    • I stated Im an existing BankWest customer. I hold a home loan with them only. This is my first transaction account with them

      Loyalty does NOT pay!

      Any product that you don't gain some kind of benefit from anymore and don't use regularly M U S T be closed (even if it costs nothing to hold).

      Failure to comply with this rule will cause you to miss out on deals each and every time! It's as simple as that :)

      • +3

        If you are with CBA you can close your netbank saver account and open another one and you get the 6 month introductory rate again :)

        • 3.91% is pretty sweet.

          Just one question though: have you, or anyone you know, tested this and can confirm with 100% certainty that this is indeed the case.

          Cheers :)
