I regret moving from Apple to Samsung

Just awhile ago I decided to move from Apple to Samsung. However these Samsung products are terrible at conserving battery life, where I find my older iPad mini gen 1 trouncing the battery life of the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. When leaving the tablet on standby, the battery discharge is terrible and the Galaxy note does not near the 9 hours promised.

I thought the idea of an S-pen was nifty and gave Android a chance. I'll be returning my Galaxy note and pay the premium for an iPad Air.

      • Agreed.
I use both Android (personal) and Iphone (work).
I prefer the Android, because I have rooted it and made it work for me, I have removed all the uneccessary bloatware and run a fairly lean smartphone, my battery lasts multiple days easy.

My IPhone, is a work phone and I cannot modify it, I still get a day to day and a half battery, but the majorityof that would be spent in standby anyway.

Both my parents use the IPhone, just because it is so simple, they dont need to change anythingm it works right out of the box, you cant take the back off, they use the Iphone is it's most basic function and they love it.

        • How did you use get your battery life to last days, I get a day max.
Rooted is the only way to go… :)

    • Too scare to step outside his closet?

    • Not everyone is an 'Apple' fan boy. To many of us a phone or tablet is a tool we use. We don't have winners and losers. We pick the tool which suits our needs best.

Now I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise (because based on your wording you've made up your mind) but there are pros and cons to using either device.

Anyone who choses ANY sort of hardware based on it's brand (or refuses to consider a device due to it's brand) is simply an zealot. It's completely unproductive.

  • Check your battery usage meter under setting->battery after 60% of your normal run time.

If there is something using the battery more than your screen you have a "leaky" app. This could even be a system app.

A friend of mine had google core service using more battery than the screen. Solution was to disable location services for all apps and the battery drain went away. You may need to search for what your particular problem is but there is a solution.

    Hope that helps!

Someone needs to make a decrapifier app for Android that removes all the carrier/oem crap.

    • +4

There is, it's called Titanium Backup, but unfortunately you have to gain root access into your OS first.

However it is the OEM crap that actually enhances the device and gives it features a fully stock Android phone will not have. If you have used a Nexus device you'll note it is pretty bare-bone on features whereas a Samsung Note device will have software tricks like multi-window and S-pen support.

I still remember how furious I was when I was forced to operate Boeing instead of Airbus. It's like being forced to drive a bus instead of driving a Merc AMG SL 63.

    • So furious you decided to dump it into the middle of the ocean?

      • Haven't got any aircraft missing from an Australian Airline yet so no :-)

Good on you – I love mine. I manage to do everything from rapidly touch-typing lecture and meeting notes onto it, to programming on the fly.

    Galaxy Note 10.1 2014: 10", 2560 x 1600

Gee, I wonder why it's battery drains faster…

    • We all wonder

  • I don't ever regret it at all. Samsung is so much better. I bought 3 spare battery's $5 each on ebay always have one back up with me just in case…
iPhone once battery is dead your F@cked!
    Bigger Screen size.
    More freedom
    More customization.
    More free stuff
100s of different phones to choose from :)
    Oh and expendable memory!
I do it my way on Samsung. and not Apple's way on iphone

    • This is a serious observation.

The difference I have noticed between iPhone users and Samsung users is that iPhone users can spell 'you're.'

I think that says a lot about the people who use each type of phone.

Maybe you just need to see more iphone users, from different age groups too. :)

      • Looking at my replies on gumtree from buyers, it's the opposite! Most can't even spell "your", let alone "you're"!

Only 2 decent phones in the market. Iphone 5S or Nexus 5. Everything else is a poor imitation

My Samsung S4 got stolen so I bought a Nexus 5. Much preferred the S4. Expandable storage, replaceable/upgradeable battery, significantly better camera and the screen is much harder to break. I really, really miss my 2.5 day extended battery, extra 32GB storage… but I knew I was going to miss out on those. I didn't expect to miss the camera 'cause I don't use it much, but damn, it's such a big difference that I'm considering on selling the Nexus 5 and getting an S4 on the camera alone.

When I first got my galaxy S3 (it was within a week of release), Samsung didn't even include the sliding bar where you could adjust the screen brightness anywhere in the options. You could only opt to go 'auto' or not. It wasn't until a later patch that that was fixed and then other issues arose.

My phone just updated (on the vodafone network) a few months ago to a new OS and it is so much faster whereas the older one was really freezing up frequently. I'm not an apple fan but I do have to concede in general their products are better optimised and complete before release (although not always - apple maps).

Having said that I'm willing to live with the bugs in Samsung/Android if I save a few hundred dollars. My phone isn't really that important to me.

  • Get tasker app and create some tasks to turn on/off services and close/kill apps. Greenify app to hibernate apps while in background.

Normally, Android device is for the people who want more flexable. You can select more theme or other luncher, even more ROM, but Apple cant. Apple are good for someone want more stable, it is for sure made by apple,no others. Also, Samsung is the biggest Andriod productor, but, it can not represent all the android. If you feel apple suit you more just use it.
For the battery life, you can control it by yourself which is one of android advantage. But you indeed need search it online.

Too lazy to read the other posts, however since the early days I have always loaded custom ROM's on my phone. Many tweaks included in these ROM's can make a massive difference to battery life. (particularly things such as underclocking the cpu while the screen is off)

I usually charge nightly right now, however I can get two days of usage with battery life to spare if needed. This is with leaving wifi / data / GPS on. In terms of usage I probably get 3 to 4 hours of listening to my audiobooks and a couple of hours of screen on doing other stuff (such as reading).

  • "these Samsung products" lol

    There are only two options:
    1. You are generalising beyond all reason.
    2. You have the only Samsung product in existence (in which case you have a lack of grammatical skill.)

  • Best of luck with your apple.. :) farewell!

  • Looks like you have found the solution for your use case (going back to an Apple solution). Not sure what you are after from us with your post though? Perhaps you could give us some clarification so we can best assist.

Your op doesn't seem to indicate you're after support on how to solve at battery issue.

thanks for your observations. before going back to apple why not try a better quality brand such as Sony or maybe the HTC or even a low cost brand with a modded firmware? Samsung is called SamSTUNG for good reason. ;)

  • "masternoob" - Says alot.

Turn off always on Wifi and suddenly your tablet will last 6 days whilst on standby.

  • I have a HTC for a personal phone and that gets about 2 days battery.. Also have a Note 2 for work and that lasts over a week with it being powered on for 8 hours a day.

The M3 managers and above at work use iPhone's and most of them complain that their battery barely lasts a day, so we had to roll out extended battery cases.

Why is the dilemma Apple v Samsung? Why not Apple v Android? Personally I hate all Samsung devices and they are a terrible company for any help when your device stops working. Years ago I saved up for months to buy a Samsung mobile phone which stoppped working after 2 months. I sent it back to them and they claimed I had dropped it and they would only fix it if I paid an obscene repair fee. Really unfair as it was in pristine condition and had never been dropped. They probably dropped it! Anyway, I have recently switched from iphone to Xperia Z1 and I love it. The battery is a lot better in the Z1 and I'm glad I gave Andriod a chance. I hate using my ipad to browse now and often use my phone instead.
