Teac SD Set Top Box and USB PVR $79 (Page 16 of Wow Sight & Sound Catalogue, NOT $9)

52

Wow sight and sound are selling a TEAC SD set top box that also works as a PVR if you attach a USB storage device. It states that it will work with a USB HDD up to 500GB but I've only tested it with a 160GB and it worked well, the only complaint I have is that the USB port is in the back and the record button isn't obvious. As far as I can tell this is the cheapest digital PVR available at the moment. It also works as USB media player.

Stock seems very limited and only just came in a few days ago (it was in at catalogue about a month ago)

Hey gumbs….. What did you pay for this gadget? Did you make a typo?

    • Yes, please clarify/verify the price thanks gumbs.
I noticed this TEAC unit in the catalogue myself and commented on it in a previous STB thread (with a catalogue price of $79).

What a plonker! Nice attention to detail pal - not only do you not post up the actual deal but you ballsup completely by quoting a price where the ACTUAL one is nearly 9 times more!

    Measure twice cut once. :-/

true - yawn - I think strathfield when they were solvent had sd set top boxes for $75 that could take ide hdd's for recording purposes.

$79 is way too much to spend on a SD only box - you can get a small tv for 300 odd with built in HD tuner.

Yeah - Strathfield had them for $69 and DailyDeals even had them for $59pp (I picked up one from either store).

        • I think this unit at Wow would be more versatile than the DVX555U unit from Deals Direct (still listed at $49.95, but Out Of Stock…)
With the DVX unit you need to install a HDD, whereas with this box you can use any portable USB device with relevant files copied to it.
          IMHO of course.

If it's $79, it's not too bad. I'm doing more research on the product myself as the recording to thumb drive interests me.

  • What's the model number of this Teac STB?

  • what about the dvx-555u for the same price at strathfield?

  • Yeh I made a typo it was $79, unit is deffinately SD only and I've been waiting for one to come in stock at my local WOW for a month. Give me a few more days to play with properly and I'll write up a full review on it, it seems to have a much better tuner than the inbuilt one in my LG LCD tv. Its picking up all channels through bunny ears when the LG needs amplified bunny ears to get anything.

  • Added Wow Sight & Sound reference in the heading and the link to the catalogue page in the description.

Finally got enough time to review it properly. Overall I wouldn't recommend it. Recording isn't great it has stopped in the middle of a recording twice now for unknown reasons so I won't rely on it. Play back of files works well if they are a standard size (640,480 etc) most movies however are random sizes and such don't work. Tv files all work fine. The tuner is excellent, the remote is decent, not as good as my LG LCD tv but far far better than my Conia dvd player in both design and range/angle of operation.

As a SD set top box its great ticks all the required boxes. As a PVR its crap, it can't play files my conia dvd player can, and recording isn't 100% reliable so I won't use it. If I hadn't thrown the box out I would be taking it back. If you want a PVR save your pennys, if you a STB its probably $30 overpriced but the tuner in it is very strong.
