Voss water - Most expensive water?

So I was loitering around in a coles near my work in my lunch break. and i saw this voss bottle. I always wanted to get one just for the bottle. Its good looking and good for using as a bottle while at work. I get very excited as this is the first time i saw it on a supermarket shelf after a loooong time ( prob because I dont shop at coles atall).

So i go ahead and pick one up and i check the price. It was $3 for 375 ml. That calculates up to $8 per litre.

Is that just a luxury? Does anybody buy that as a drinking water (except people like me who just buy it to get the bottle).

yeah, my sis bought the same item just for the bottle.

  • Bought a bottle of Voss once, as soon as I was done my friend asked for the bottle…

  • +2

Another person who bought it just for the bottle here…

    • +1

+1 for buying just for the bottle

  • +15

I have an urge to go out now and get one for myself too.. dat' bottle.

  • Yup. I've got one big bottle and one small bottle.

    • i really wanted to big bottle. but i could only find the small one. Any idea where you can get the big bottle from?

      • +4

Intrigued, I did a google search and of all places dan murphys popped up with an ad. Looks like price is decent too…

      • +4

I have seen the 800ml at Woolworths in Morisset for $4.99. I think it was even dearer late last year.

      • Can't remember… Just either Coles or Woolies. My guess is Coles, ahh… But someone below has said they saw it at Woolies.

        • Bought one at woolies last week. Also just for the bottle, the water tastes like crap. (edit: it was the sparkling, didn't know they had non sparkle)

Interesting how it's all about perspective.

$3 for a bottle of water = that's crazy! Fark off! It's free outta this tap.

    but

$3 for an attractive reusable bottle = that's so cheap! And look, free water inside! SCORE!

    • +1

I wonder how much it would cost to water-log a turnip with Voss water?

    • Indeed … it's all about what the consumer is using as a reference point when it comes to value.

  • Are the voss bottles usually plastic or glass?

    • mine was glass

    • Usually glass. But I believe plastic variants do exist.

    • Says on Wikipedia PET versions are sold alongside the regular glass ones in the US

  • I saw a lady with a water bottle at the customer service desk at Woolworths. I was thinking, if she's returning it I want to buy it! bc it looked glass but I couldn't read what it said. Now I know what it is, thanks

  • +6

    Glass all the way!!

Fun fact as well. They used Voss water bottles at a recent noble peace prize awards!! I have 3 of these just for the bottles. I justified the price in imagining that the water was gathered by Norwegian monks (by cupped hands) to the bottling factory…and then blessed.

Got mine from David Jones but have seen the big ones at Woolies occasionally. Can buy off eBay as well I think.

    • While on the topic of Woolies, Thomas Dux sells them too.

  • +4

Try buying a small bottle of Mount Franklin, it costs almost the same but with a flimsy plastic bottle.

  • +1

yeah, i'm sure you could get people to buy expensive sewerage water if you marketed it properly ..

    • +10

nothing wrong with sewerage water as long as its treated correctly

  • Meanwhile in the third world, billions don't have access to clean water.

    • +3

Not sure if this is a load of crap but…

"Voss Foundation provides access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene as a means to enable community-driven development in Sub-Saharan Africa, and raises awareness of the ongoing need in the region. Help us make a difference!"

I think the idea of VOSS Water might be similar to the "THANKYOU Water".

Regardless, it would be way better to just donate money directly - even if a substantial amount will go to phantom aid or technical costs.

      • You often find these goodwill/green washing campaigns are indeed a load of crap although it should be noted I have no knowledge of this brand and activities associated with it.

    • hence the need for bottled water :)

  • +1

Apparently bottle is designed by CK

  • +2

Not sure what the fuss is? the bottle is plain and ordinary. I don't like it but most bottles of water cost around $3 anyway, up to $4.50 for the large ones. But with people paying the same for the gut rot of soft drinks at least water is better for you.

  • +1

Who ever thought we would "Ever" pay for bottled water I say its a complete Rip Off. But that's my opinion. Yeah I realize tap water sucks but $2.50 - $6.00 a bottle who's reaping the rewards Tax Man and coke cola amital. Just something to think about. :)

    • +2

      Why does tap water suck?

    • It would seem to not be a "rip off" to the people buying it given that it's a completely arbitary purchase.

  • +1

It is hard to find a Glass bottle.

Bought the 800ml…accidentally got the Sparkling variant, gave the water away and wanted only the bottle.

I dislike drinking / eating out of plastics.

    • There's a non-sparkle variant? Damn :(

  • -6

For Heath wise, drinking from plastic bottles causes hormone imbalance, cell, and tissue damage, there for it's more difficult to lose body-fat.

While drinking from the glass bottle protects you from harmful bacteria, and toxins.

I hope that answer your questions folks :D

    • +6

      Is that scientifically proven ?

      • I am science. I approve.

    • +5

It's true that some PET plastics contain chemicals like Bisphenol-A, and there is some concern about the chemical leeching into the fluid and mimicking hormones in the human body. Some plastic products and bottles now specifically state they are Bisphenol-A free.

As for the other claims about cell and tissue damage from PET plastic… citation please? Also the claim that glass protects from bacteria is dubious, as all bottled water products are close to sterile. What kind of pathogenic bacteria can survive weeks or months in a water environment without anything to eat? Anyone who has owned a fish tank will tell you bacteria, mold and fungus are quite happy to grow on plastic or glass.

The last part about toxins, again, a citation from a peer reviewed scientific study would be helpful to back it up.

      • Okay…. I was talking about Health wise as in "Gym training"

It's obvious that you reuse your glass bottle everyday and you'll clean it?

        http://www.poliquingroup.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Art…

I only know this fact because my "Trainer" at shredded in Perth educated me on this….

        • +4

Most of my trainers banged on to me about the benefits of organic fruit and vegetables but I still chose to believe the peer reviewed studies which didn't show the benefits they were talking about …

      • Puny human, how dare you question the bro-science!!!

        • +5

Trainer is shredded. Story checks out.

        • Roids.

  • +2

I prefer the Antipodes bottle. Almost as expensive.

  • I recall seeing this artisian Norwegian water at Coles a few months back… the price was $4.95 per bottle so it looks like they're tapped out the 'hey, let's buy it for laughs' crowd. If just a fraction of the people who walk into Coles buy just one bottle the company will make a fortune.

I always find it curious that people who are very self conscious about their health and want the finest, cleanest, most pollution free water to drink will quite happily pay for a bottle to be manufactured, filled, and shipped literally half way around the world. Think of the carbon footprint of that 375ml of water.

  • Crown Perth sells the big bottles for $5 each and large bottles for $10 each.
The pools at Crown sells the plastic variant (for obvious reasons).
Apparently, the material used to make the glass voss bottles are really good at withstanding heat (ie. leaving it out in the sun wouldn't affect the water) This is one of their marketing selling points.

  • My mrs works at an upmarket Asian restaurant in Perth and they sell the 800ml bottles for $10.50. Why people pay for carbonated water I will never understand.
We have about 4 bottles here in the fridge that she brought home from work (empty, after the customer had drank it) and we use them for water/cordial. Nice bottles.

    • +1

It was the same for me… My Mrs worked at an upmarket Asian restaurant in Perth. We have about 4 bottles in the fridge that she brought home from work (empty, after the customer had drank it) and we use them for water. Nice bottles!

    • Why people pay for carbonated water I will never understand.

because tap water isn't carbonated :)

  • I really don't see what all the fuss is about? It's just a plain, boring looking glass bottle.

    • +5

if you look at it and dont want it, you'll never understand

      move on

  • They could remove the water and say it is bottled air, and there would be some people who would just buy it for the bottle.

  • +1

    I only drink diamond water - http://realdiamondwater.com/home

    • I cannot drink anything other than Diamond Water either. I also cannot ingest any audio or visual signal that has not passed through an Diamond HDMI cable.

    • +1

LOL thanks for that - everyone should read the blurb for shits and giggles.

"purely structured alkaline water began with the dream to connect people to a more pure self. With diamonds enhancing a 9.5 pH alkaline water and the benefit from its positive energy and countless health benefit"

    • I only bath in diamond water

  • You can get them for free from restaurant rubbish bins
Or if you have friends who work at restaurants

    • +5

Or, instead of dumpster diving, you could just go to the supermarket and pay a few dollars for one.

    • +1

Dumpster dive or pay $5…I know what I'll choose.

      • Save $5 of course :)

  • +2
    • I got a few bottles to try to etch similar designs as in the link for gifts. Unfortunatly couldnt find etching cream anywhere.

  • It's funny. I just threw my bottle in the bin last week. Actually I too bought it a few months ago for the water. Reused the bottle a couple of times at home and then it went to the back of the shelf. Was cleaning the shelf on weekend and binned this. It is a great bottle though.

  • These make good portable tea pots too

  • Got my two 800ml bottles today. Holy crap didn't expect them to be so big!! Should've gotten the smaller volume ones.
