SO, how are people enjoying their next-gen consoles?

I am sure there are a few people on here who took advantage of some deals and bargains to grab either an Xbox One or a PS4 (or both, if you're lucky enough).

I thought perhaps OzBargainers could share their experiences so far & those of us who haven't entered next-gen console gaming could live vicariously through you. :)

My Wii U is fantastic. Put in a good number of hours and I'm enjoying it immensely.
Multiplayer for MH3U is great fun and Nintendo land is a blast with 2 other people.

    Thanks for asking.

Also, "Next gen" is the PS5 and XboxX. I think you mean "current gen consoles".

    • +20

I don't get why you're being downvoted. Wii U is a current gen console (or next gen if you still consider the PS3/360/Wii era as the current gen). Sure, it's graphical output isn't up there with the PS4/One and of course PC, not to mention it's lacking in third party support and sales, but it's still in the same generation as the PS4/One. Same goes for handhelds - the 3DS is definitely in the same generation as the Vita, despite the Vita having superior graphics.

      • +3

In all honestly I made that post knowing full well it would get negged to hell. This communities reaction on anything other then Ps4, Xbone and Android is pretty atrocious, I was taking the piss out of it (worked a charm apparently!).

But your not wrong, I agree completely with your post (as was implied in my own). Graphical fidelity =/= generation. Otherwise PC would be current gen and all consoles would just be constantly playing for second, except for Nintendo who, since the Gamecube, just haven't had a (profanity) to give O.o

        • +1

Last time I checked any positive news about Xbone or Wii U on the internet is quickly and atrociously attacked by Sony Fanboys. Don't get me wrong, all fanboys suck, PC ones are arrogant and half the Nintendo fanboys are in denial, but Sony fanboys are always attacking other consoles, eg. Xbone can't play any games at 1080p lolol or Nintendo going third party, can't wait to play Zelda on ps4 with real next Gen graphics, etc.

        • Sarmen you should read threads about Sony games. They get trolled to death by Xboners as well mate.

        • +2

They all troll and abuse each other. No arguements there, except, you know, between themselves.

I'm just going to stick to enjoying games on any console that I can play said game on.

        • As I said they all suck, but it could be counter trolling for all the crap they got for the drm thing, like when the 3DS was in trouble Sony fans kept spouting nintendoomed but now with it out of trouble Nintendo fans always troll Vita articles and threads.

      • -4

But the Xbox One's graphics isn't up there with PS4 either… so why does the community accept that it's "next Gen" but WiiU not? just because they both came out late 2013? if WiiU is not next Gen for it's graphics then the Xbox 720P should be on par with PS3, xbox360, and WiiU.

I only consider ps4 next gen because it's 2014 and you can't even play 1080P? come on! also isn't xbox one controllers still using AA battery technology from 1960's? they still doing 1995 dvds or blurays not sure.

        • +3

You are making yourself sound like a real Sony fanboy.

          1. Both the Wii U and the Xbox One have games that run at 1080p, granted, not as many as the PS4.

          2. You can get rechargeable battery packs for the Xbox One controller, just like you could for the Xbox 360 controller. Some people would say that the removable battery pack is an advantage that the Xbox One has over the PS4.

          3. The Xbox One can play both DVDs and Blu-rays, just like the PS4. Both Sony and Microsoft are planning to release updates for 3D Blu-rays in the future.

        • Please ignore suicine. If you knew him from the WP CoD thread you would not need to be told.

    • Yeah my Wii U is also super fun, been having overly long binges on MH3U with my mate, its so good to hear it.

      • We should hunt sometime. I'm actually about to log on in a little while and kill some SavageJ or Ala.

      • -1

I've played COD Ghosts on Wii U and it was OK. It's mostly being used as a plex media player these days and even then that's only when my PS3 can't handle the job because navigating through menus is much slower than on PS3 even though it has more "power" because of the OS that seems to reload every time I take a step.

I also really dislike I need to have that stupid tablet on all the time, I wish it came without one.

        • Actually I can confirm you can use the console w/o the tablet. If the tablet has power in range it will turn on but if no tablet in range thats usable or in range at all it work.
Played mine for a few months with only a Pro controller and Wii Motes.

        • you can't access system settings which is required to change region for things like netflix. I have to change between them so I can use netflix when I want and game on local servers

    • I haven't been playing my Wii U much. Too busy catching up on DS and Wii games and filling gaps in my gamecubes library. I just hope we get a Star Fox. Also, Wii U games, other than launch and Ubisoft titles, refuse to drop their price. I've been wanting Most Wanted but I'm too stingy to pay $80 for it.

      • Star Fox for the Wii U like that of the one on Gamecube. I would love that and I'm hoping retro are working on it (they have an announced game being worked on atm and after their fantastic job on DK, I can't wait to see what it is!)

        • Adventures or Assault?

        • I missed two of them?!

Man, I should of gotten a Gamecube.

Adventures is the one I would love to see another like. Did you ever play it?

        • No, I played Assault, which is actually nothing like Adventures. Its a rail shooter and third person shooter instead of a Zelda clone.

        • Drats. Ah well.

    • Yes! A semantic debate about what constitutes "next-gen"! That is what I was looking for! I applaud you for you contribution.

      • I sense sarcasm but I am unsure of it. I was just looking clarify the point that we have entered a new generation, every console is out now.
If you were genuine (I also look to make posts that start "semantic debates", although there was little debating, I posted and someone agreed and apparently people neged me as expectd), then my bad, totally misread your comment hah!

        • +8

"SO, how are people enjoying their next-gen consoles?"
"OzBargainers could share their experiences so far & those of us who haven't entered next-gen console gaming"

Well, I saw mention of Xbone and Ps4 but also 2 blanket questions/statements relating to "next gen" in general.
If you own a Wii U good sir, you have lied as you stated you didn't own a "next gen" console.
Did thy lie unto the people in whom he question? What is such sorcery! Lying to people on thy internets, for shame!

        • Dick reply, ThisJustin. You asked about PS4, Xbox One and "next-gen" in general. Like it or not, the Wii U is a next gen console. I haven't turned it on in a while, but I've really enjoyed the small amount of time I've spent with my Wii U.

        • +2

The whole first half of the thread was hijacked to discuss something I didn't ask about.

The petulance and entitlement is strong with this one. "This is MY thread! I wanna talk about what I WANNA TALK ABOUT."

        • +1

Okay, lets talk about those consoles.

          They suck.

Good, now let's talk about the Wii-U some more.

        • -7

Imbecilic response. People are supposed to discuss the thing the OP basis the thread on. If someone wants to discuss the Wii U they are free to go and start a thread about the Wii U.

        • Denying that the Wii-U is a part of 'next-gen' is like denying the Wii is a part of current gen. So we ARE discussing what the OP bases the thread on. Just because you have a personal preference leaning toward the more powerful consoles (that are doing better financially (due to criminal in-app pucharses (LOOKING AT YOU, 2K'S NBA!))) doesn't make it any less valid of a next-gen console. Even if Nintendo is trying desperately to bankrupt themselves with supreme effiency.

Look at it this way. If I wanted to talk about Africa, and specified that "Oh boy I love Egypt and South Africa" in the description of my thread titled "So how do you like Africa?", would I be getting angry at people talking about Nigeria?

          No I wouldn't. Because that's just silly.

        • +1

People are supposed to discuss the thing the OP basis the thread on.

Nobody is "supposed" to do anything. You might be the OP, but you aren't the master and commander of discussion. If people want to discuss closely related topics (I know talking about a next-gen console in a thread about next-gen consoles is a bit of a stretch) you have no right to have a sook.

        • -6

Where did I deny it was a part of next-gen? Nowhere. When did I suggest a preference? Nowhere. This seems awfully a lot like people defending Nintendo against some imagined criticism that I offered. Or that it was some intolerable insult that I didn't mention the Wii U.

I didn't know that OzBargainers had such a fetish for Nintendo. Live and learn, I guess.

        • +2

You are spewing so many contradictions that you could be a witness in a Phoenix Wright game.

        • -3

          Such as?

        • +2

Even if Nintendo is trying desperately to bankrupt themselves with supreme effiency.

Why do people keep blowing the trumpets of doom in Nintendo's direction?

No one's denying that the WiiU is bombing hard but it's quite an inversion of reality to insist that a company that:

          • hasn't laid off a single employee despite its financial troubles;
          • is building a new HQ in Kyoto; and
          • has cash reserves of 500 billion yen, enough to survive this entire console generation

is at greater risk of bankruptcy than its competitor which:

          • recently laid off staff across several of its development studios;
          • had several high-profile departures;
          • sold off its office building in Tokyo last year; and
          • is selling its flagship console at a loss.
        • Let's not forget rumours that investors want Microsoft to spin off its Xbox business and that Amazon are interested in buying.

I've found the discussion regarding the wii u very enlightening. I would actually purchase this ahead of the other consoles but for the price of games and how they don't depreciate over time..

        • Such as Dual Destinies.

Maybe Apollo Justice. Possibly even Edgeworth Investigations 2 (C'moooooon localization!)

    • I know right! I actually got Wonderful 101 for my birthday on the 29th and I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN. The most refreshing beat-em-up I've ever played. Thankyou Platinum games, for being able to try something new in this age of innumerable modern shooters!

    • Wii U? Sounds like a Wii accessory.

      • And thus, you've pointed out the first mistake Nintendo made with their ill-thought-out console.

They made it sound like an accessory rather than a whole new console. Shoulda just called it the Wii 2. Or the Dolphin. That's what Nintendo calls things when they have no idea lol.

        • -1

Dolphin hmm? I'm not sure that's such a good idea, to name their console after an emulator for the GameCube & Wii.

They could've gone with the name Revolution (the codename for the Wii). Or even Wii Revolution.

        • Wow, such ignorance.

Dolphin was Nintendo's internal codename for the Gamecube. The emulator is named after the console.

        • …..The emulator is called Dolphin because the codename for the Gamecube in development was the Dolphin.

But Wii Revolution is a better idea.

        • Isn't that exactly what I said? They called the Gamecube the Dolphin during the development process because they didn't know what to call it, which is fair enough. 'They had no idea'. You sir, need to learn some nettiquette.

        • +1

It's PainToad, just carry on dude.

        • Why the hell have you been downvoted?

        • Because he's an ignoramace.

        • +1

Yeah, I admit it was ignorant (thinking Dolphin was only the emulator name and not the codename for GameCube). I only found out later after posting this comment. My bad.

      • They really should have called it the Nintendo Wii 2.

    • I use my Wii as my next gen vibrator.

      • Welcome to the jokes that were being made in 2006

  • Prob not super worth the jump yet, but w/e, I figured I'd get one sooner or later.
Some of the xbone exclusives (dead rising 3 co-op, plants vs zombies and titanfall) have been pretty fun.

I guess it would be a bigger difference for those without decent pcs.

    • +2

Titanfall and Plants Vs Zombies aren't xbone exclusives. They are also available for the pc….

      • Yeah yeah, everyone still calls them an xbone exclusive, because they are not on the other platforms that are actually their competitors.

        • Fair call.
We can say Microsoft exclusive. Then its 100% accurate!

I hope PvZ is released soon for PC. Hanging to get a copy. Enjoying it yourself?

I'm still on the fence about Titanfall. It will take me 2 weeks to download the game if I did get it -_-

        • +1

          Yeah PVZ is good.
Titanfall is alright too, but I think I like PVZ more.
The gardens and graveyard mode, where you slowly progress through a huge level taking over gardens till a big objective at the end is pretty fun, wish they had some more maps tho.

        • Sounds fun. Cheers for the Info. Perhaps we can play if they implement cross device play.

        • I find it laughable that you are enjoying a mash-up, risky concept more than "THE MOST ANTICIPATED MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER OF ALL TIME"

Have we moved on from gritty modern shooters? My gut says 'I hope so'.

        • Titanfall is on two other systems, PC & 360.

        • Yeah, but did you ever expect titanfall to be anything other than cod with mechs?
Plants vs Zombies has actual innovation and a team based gametype that reminds me of the old siege days in tribes 2.

        • You're oversimplifying it. "Cod with mechs" won't make it any less appealing to the bogan/jock audiences that will overpopulate the gaming industry, buying it in droves, and making it successful regardless of its lack of innovation and actual talent.

In fact, the army of bogans would argue that "CoD with mechs" makes it MORE appealing, although it may stray a bit too far into science fiction, which "IS FER NURDS WHO DUNT PLAY FUTBAL!"

          God bless the casual gamers.

        • I'm far from a casual gamer. I would class myself as a serious and diverse gamer. I hated every CoD after CoD 4 BUT… I'm really, really enjoying Titanfall. While not being groundbreaking, it is certainly a fresher take on the competitive FPS genre than anything we've seen in a long time. The underlying CoD mechanics remain, while adding in Titan combat and a parkour system for pilots. It's a good game.

        • Do you think that Titanfall 6 in 3 years will also be a good game?

I'm just worried that this game is going to bring the rest of the Call of Duty franchise with it in its foray into new ideas. And the fact that it's EA gets me quite terrified. When EA gets hold of something that makes money…

        • Titanfall 6 could be a good game, it also could be a steaming pile of crap. However, as it stands, I think Titanfall is a good game. You can't really judge it by what the franchise may, or may not, become. I would love to see it evolve and become better with each iteration, break boundaries, revolutionise and just generally be more awesome with each new release. It's a long shot - there are more bad games than good ones out there - but I'm hopeful!

        • The question I feel is more, is it better than battlefield 2142 was all those years ago? For me, the answer is no, its a huge step down. Sure the graphics are prettier but the gameplay is pretty lackluster and non-innovative, I think COD with mechs is a very apt description of the gameplay itself.

I think the part I really dislike is the gametypes where you just keep randomly spawning in some area when you die, I feel like the lack of objectives, scale and an actual forward line etc, kind of ruins any kind of versimilitude.

    • Have you not got Peggle 2 yet?!

      • Nope!
I was a fan of the first one, but I'd prefer it on my phone than my console.

  • Haven't played my Ps4 in awhile, mainly due to the lack of games on it and all the deals that are on pc.

  • I've got both and they are both pretty good, but a small point is that the Xbox allows you to watch TV while playing a game (you need to plug in your HD set top box into HDMI in) but the snap to TV works great… PS4 has really good graphics too…
    hope that helps.

bottom line is get the console your friends get so you can play online…

  • -1

Absolutely hooked on Warframe on PS4, it's excellent.

I have a pile of other titles that I have hardly played though which is a shame.

  • I'm loving my ps4 aside from the things you have to put up with when you buy a console straight away, like lacking features and weird little errors.

    • I love my ps4 too. But still find the ps3 useful at the same time.
Together with PSN sub, and the "free" games. That also are avail for my ps3 that sits below it are good. Plus with the vita, the one PSN account gives me free games for all 3 platforms.

The thing that I wish the ps4 showcased for free more, is free car games, there are none, and very few cheap ones.

PS4 for me has never crashed or had weird errors.

I still have my Ps3 gathering dust, but ill keep all three forever.

  • +1

Barely touched my ps4 - only bought it for watchdogs, so hopefully will get to turn it on soon! Though contrast was a nice ps+ freebie.

  • Not enough out there on ps4 / 360 for me to take the plunge yet - got some eb credit sitting on a ps4 preorder which I'm in absolutely no hurry to collect - I'm waiting it out for a game which I like enough to get the console to play.

On the wii u - graphically only the same as ps3, but honestly I'm enjoying it - super mario 3d world and new super mario bros u are beautiful, nintendo land is a good party game just for mario chase, and in the near future mario kart 8 and the new super smash bros are coming out. Total lack of 3rd party support (can't blame them) but the biggest nintendo draw card is the top quality in house titles.

  • +1

Put about 30 hours into Killer Instinct, 30 in Titanfall, 10 into COD and BF4 (30 hours into SBS on Demand). Im pretty happy with the 3months I have owned it.

Waiting for games like Ryze and Zoo Tycoon to drop in price, 50 to me is still too much.

  • Finally played my ps4 (tried the last two months' ps+ titles…) since someone posted the tomb raider bargain. I didn't finish it on 360, and while it seems a little last gen (360/ps3) at least i have a ps4 game to play!

  • -2

This is OzBargain, don't understand why you guys don't all have PC's?

    • -1

This doesn't make sense. Wouldn't a particularly tight Ozbargainer, who wanted to play the latest games, own a current gen console and not a far more expensive gaming PC? In fact, a "true" OzBargainer wouldn't even own a PC - they'd own a cheap-ass Ainol tablet. No pun intended… ok yes it was.

      • +1

A cheap ass OzBargainer would have a crappy PC and be happy with playing Dwarf Fortress (which is free).

        I am that OzBargainer.

      • +1

I'm a screwed up OzBargainer, I got an expensive pc whilst looking for anoil tablets. I should have just got ainol and had some money to spare, but instead I've overspent and still no ainol.

      • +1

Configured a top end gaming rig, spent thousands. Haven't played games since putting it together 15 months ago.

On the bright side, VLC has never crashed.

      • You can build a better performing gaming/all around PC for less than a next gen console. Then you play all the same next gen games, but you know, with the advantage of them being actual next gen versions of games on the PC - and for more often than not 40%-80% less for the exact same games via Steam, Game Key sites, or even Origin. Extra bonuses on top of that include the ability to update, patch & mod games, along with actual dedicated servers for online gaming & you can use the PC for everything else you need a PC for in life as well. It's a complete and utter no-brainer of a decision to make if you are a real OzBargainer.

        • You can build a PC that will play next-gen games at a nex-gen level for less than $550? Even without a monitor/mouse/keyboard/speakers/Windows software that is a serious stretch.

        • What?

You don't buy a monitor for your gaming PC (or add that to the cost of the unit), just like with your console. You plug that bad boy into your TV. Mouse, keyboard & monitor can be had for $50 all up - less than the cost of a console controller. Gamepads on the PC are cheaper than console equivalents as it is & if really needed, they can plug into a PC's USB port anyway.

Linux & variations of it are all free, windows 7 and 8 OEM's can be picked up for <$50 if you hunt around for them.

        • -1

Dude - I said "even without" all of those things.

Ok so you've acknowledged the cost of those items is at least $100. That means you think "You can build a better performing gaming/all around PC for less than a next gen console". This means you think you can build a PC, capable of surpassing the Xbox One or PS4 for $450 (or $500 if you use Linux - which you aren't going to do if it's a gaming PC). I really don't think so.

        • Yes it is definitely possible, so many things have been done which prove this.

        • @algy

Instead of saying "so many things have been done which prove this" can you actually provide some proof. I contend that it is impossible to build a PC that is "better" than a next gen console for $450.

        • windows is already $100 so your left with say $400 to spend on parts, best you could do would be a Pentium G1820 with an R7-250, and that's with the cheapest H81 M/B and case with built in PSU

        • -2

Do a google search. There's literally dozens of viable options for better performance at lesser cost than either of the new consoles. It's no one's job here to keep you informed of basic well established facts.

        • -1

I've just done a quick build on umart, infinite.

          • POS Mouse
          • POS Keyboard
          • POS Case
          • POS PSU
          • POS H81 mobo
          • 8GB of POS RAM
          • Intel i3 4130
          • 1TB HDD
          • GTX 660

$601. I'm assuming you know what "POS" stands for.

        • +3

Or you could put Linux on a wired up potato for as low as $20!

        • +1

          Worked for the PS3.

      • +1

Well if you remove the price of a monitor, even a cheap gaming pc does very well against current consoles.

You then make further savings based on the steam origin and Amazon sales that come through.

Mind you, I now have 58 games via steam and I've probably played about 20 of them :s

        • +1

Problem is the titles I want are usually console exclusives. I have a gaming rig and it doesn't get used. I have a massive library on Steam with many of the games unplayed (I buy them with the best intentions)

        • True that :o

      • I still have my 5 year old PC motherboard, but I have given it a 2nd hand Q9550 for $55 to give it speed, and a Nvidia 430 and SSD, and its damn good fast.

    • I don't see why you wouldn't. Consoles generally last for about a decade and play games at a consistent level throughout its life without having to upgrade and also at a lower cost. A decent gaming PC might cost around $800+ and then on top of that may have to be upgraded (graphics card) every so often to get the best out of it. Don't forget the many console exclusives, I know there's PC exclusives too but I find console ones more appealing to me.

If you want to spend money on a gaming PC to play games, go ahead. For those seeking a consistent gaming experience for years without having to worry about upgrading, consoles may be the better way to go.

      • +1

Will these newer consoles have the same shelf life of the Xbox 360 and ps4?

        • It's illogical to say they will.
