SMS verification to reduce spam posts & hiding of deals by poweruser

After reporting another post from the same banned domain which posted one yesterday, I was wondering whether some additional hurdles could be implemented. For example, how about verifying new members through an SMS with a code sent to an Australian mobile. After all, why would people outside Australia who are not a REP sign up to post bargains? Unless of course they are overseas temporarily, in which case they will likely have an Oz number.

Also, how about when a poweruser reports a deal, it is hidden until a moderator decides otherwise?

Not so sure about the SMS code. Some individuals may not like sharing their mobile number (myself included) just to sign up for a website.

It depends. Most people who sign up do so after monitoring Ozbargain for some time. They can therefore know the site is trustworthy. If there is a statement that their mobile number is not stored anywhere or provided to 3rd parties, then it may be okay. Nowadays it is becoming more common that people's identity is verified by mobile.

I don't think it's such a good idea. The moderators are doing an efficient job already. Most of the posts are removed within 10 mins. It will only discourage posts. Unless Ozbargain has a surge in members and or spammers, the current 'system' is quite adequate.

I agree they are doing well, but reducing the time that spam is "up there" will discourage people from posting it.

  • I say go ahead if you want to kill the website.

    • PinchMe requires SMS verification. And we know Ozbargainers aren't opposed to PinchMe.

  • The system is not broken. Leave it alone. I have sometimes reported spam within seconds of seeing it on the Live page, and I think I'm not the only one. If you want to help, ask to be a mod and help removing the spam, which is where the delay happens.

    • Hence my second suggestion of allowing power users to remove spam.
