Superseded version, but still a great price.

I have one of these and wouldn't recommend it.

The sound quality isn't great and it has a proprietary power connector with no battery so it's a pain to power by 5v or 12v if you want to use it in a car or somewhere that doesn't have a spare power jack.

The generic A2DP bluetooth receivers on eBay for ~$5 delivered with an inbuilt battery that can be powered/charged by a USB jack, would be a much better buy IMO.

      Thank you!

    • Do you have some recommended ones?

My car has bluetooth phone but music won't play over the builtin bluetooth. Would these A2DP adapters do phone calls and music via the Aux in plug? Phone is a HTC one if it makes any difference

      • The HTC One absolutely supports A2DP music playback over bluetooth. You must be doing something wrong. This device is for hi-fi systems with no inbuilt bluetooth receiver capability, not to give bluetooth transmitting powers to an audio source that doesn't (like an iPod nano or somesuch).

        • Certain cars lack the profile to play music over bluetooth but have the profile for mic+mono to use for calls.

A friends Corolla Levin is like that.

        • Yup, and that profile is called A2DP. Not all cars support it.
I would be surprised if a newer car (~2011 onwards) didn't support it though.

        • Yeah, the car won't play bluetooth music but it does phone calls fine.

      • They won't do phone calls but they'll do music. Belkin has one that can do phone calls too, but I found the audio quality is pretty poor as the microphone is on the module itself which you stick onto your car interior. Vibrations from the road and engine can be easily heard on the other end.

It's not very expensive though, so could be worth a try for you.

      • Yes it would.

I don't have any recommended ones, I'm just not recommending this one. I think if it's quality you are after then you can't beat a wired connection, which is what I ended up doing for my car after trying this Belkin reciver. From the phone directly into the amplifier (by passing headunit), which splits the stereo into 5ch 1000wRMS goodness.

      • I can't edit the post, wow, what a reply so quick!
It's a 2009 FG Ford Falcon with the tech pack. Used to work with iPhones but every new IOS release broke it and had to go back to Ford for firmware updates.

Since IOS 5 I haven't bothered and now have the HTC and would like music and phone over bluetooth. I don't mind if the steering wheel phone controls don't work anymore.

    • can you suggest an ebay one? Quick look and I can't find them at $5 - more like $12-20 - not sure if I'm searching the right terms.

Found one - this probably does the trick : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-USB-Wireless-3-5mm-Stereo-A…

  • Anyone know if you can you use it as a bluetooth transmitter (to transmit input to bluetooth headphones)?

      It's a receiver.

      • Half of the bluetooth transmitters on eBay are labelled "receiver". The naming can be confusing to a non-audiophile (i.e. myself).

    • +1

not this one. but plenty on eBay.

  • I'm no audiophile but in my experience the sound quality of bluetooth audio transmission is AWFUL unless it supports apt-X.

    • I'm quite fussy over sound myself. I think Bluetooth audio can be quite acceptable in a noisy car. Road, wind, and engine noise definitely helps hide lots of deficiencies.

      • That is so true. Usually the crappier the car system, the more acceptable the quality of these devices and FM transmitters!

Sigh, that reminds me of the time I rented a Hyundai Getz. The sound system supported A2DP Bluetooth, but the speakers sounded so horrible that I preferred silence (well .. engine/road/wind noise).

I found bluetooth audio a huge improvement over the FM transmitter I previously used in the car.

If it really does sound awful, you might be using the handsfree profile instead of A2DP.
(But an audiophile would say MP3 sounds awful.)
