iPhone 5S Outright/Plan Price Drop

For those of you familiar with the Iphone pricing trends, is there a possibility that there will be a good deal on 5S in the near future?

I've checked all telcos and Australian/online outright prices and it seems like the ridiculous Iphone prices never seem to drop. Is this what you get with Apple products? Minimal depreciation compared to the Android & Windows phone counterparts?

Is this what you get with Apple products?

Yes. Expect the price for iPhone 5S to drop after iPhone 6 is released.

    • IPhone. 6 will probably cost more, with not much of a price drop on the 5S.

    • How much of a drop do you predict?

      • You can look at some of the past deals for iPhone 5 when 5S was released. That will probably give you some indication on what kind of drop can you expect. For example ~$50 drop from Groupon and BigW right after the announcement. Then this $140 drop from DickSmith two weeks after.

        • Not sure what's happening, but the IPhone 5 seems phased out altogether??

        • The iPhone 5c has replaced it as the mid-tier model in this year's line-up…

And expect rrp to go up if dollar drops

  • iPhone 5Ss still appear to have too many issues software wise… varies by user but when I had mine it wasn't good!

(Got a full refund after 5 months and am now very happy with my $400 nexus 5!)

    • Could you please elaborate on the issues you faced with your 5S? And where did you purchase your phone from (online/retail/telco)?

      • Radomly it would freeze up and then the whole phone would crash a few minutes later. Other apps would also crash randomly but only to the home screen. It took apple 4 months to finally identify this as a problem and 5 months to release a 'fix.'

I say 'fix' as this now appears to be happening to other iPhones that it didn't happen to previously. Also now there are rumours (I got out before this) of other problems with WiFi and battery drains.

TouchID also became less reliable, again apparently there is a new fix for this.

I bought it from the Apple store here in Adelaide and even got a replacement only 1 month in from the phone even being released!

My opinion: If you want a new iPhone, wait and see what the iPhone 6 is like, shouldn't be too much longer for that.
Also consider other options such as the Nexus 5, it really is amazing value for money, very high end phone for $400.

        • Thanks. It will be good if any other OzBargainers who own/used to own an Iphone 5S can add some input to this.

Which leads me to my next question. What do you think is an on par non-Apple phone which is up there in specs and performance?

I know this isn't really another perspective, but more cases nevertheless, I know 3 other people who experienced the same crashing and restarting issues, one only having bought their 5S a fortnight ago!

Most other reasonably expensive phones will have better specs than iPhones, however iPhones make better use of their specs through optimisation, gaining higher performance out of lower specs.

I have had an iPhone 5s for several months. Since the recent iOS 7.1 update, performance (speed) and reliability has increased significantly. I have not had a single app or system crash since updating. So I would not hesitate recommending it now…

Yes - this is often an overlooked factor

Minimal depreciation compared to the Android & Windows phone counterparts?

I personally view this as a benefit, because it means I still get maximum value back when I resell it; other phones can deprecate in value much more quickly.

    • Question is how easy would it be to get someone to buy your 2nd hand Iphone for not much depreciation of the original rrp? It is a given fact that smart phones depreciate technologically over time.

On eBay you can quite easily sell second hand iPhones for decent prices, when the 5s was launched 4s' were still selling easily for $400+ which is quite good for a 2 year old second hand phone

        • Yeah and if you can sell them before the new model comes out, you can net even more. I've done it many times.

  • if an iPhone 6 comes out it will usually be the same price as the outgoing model. Unless

    1. specs are significantly different
    2. exchange rate is significantly different

Source- 20 years as an apple dealer

But to answer your question- price on an outgoing model will usually decrease in proportion to how many units available when new model released. i.e.. lots of stock = bigger discount. In recent years Apple are very careful to minimise old stock so don't expect much of a discount.

  • DSE have it for $819 as a special until 30th March
