did you choose paypal for payment? You can cancel the recurring payment from paypal without news realising it.

Put an entry in your phone or Outlook calendar (or both) one week b4 end of 4 weeks trial to cancel subscription. I haven't received Rebel card but it's been less than 2 weeks since I signed up.
Does VISA have a similar cancellation?
News will realise, on your account it will say "PayPal unauthorised" or something along those lines. It still means they physically cannot charge you after you have cancelled PayPal, though :)

They actually charge for the next subscription 5 days in advance, but if you call up and cancel any subscription they give a pro-rata refund for the unused subscription. I.e. they will give a full refund of the next period they just charged to your account if you call and cancel before the next period starts.

Not only have I not received the gift card, I only got the newspaper delivered the first day and since then nada, zilch :-)
Not getting the paper doesn't bother me, it was going straight to the recycle bin or bottom of the bird cage anyway.

I rang them today to clarify if I am getting a card. She checked my account and said I am getting one but they are way behind due to it being so popular
I'd kindly let her know they are breaching their own t&c by not delivering me my gift card, which is just a letter with a card, within 14 days.

Cancelled my subscription, they will check for eligibility about the cards before sending, slight possibility that those signed up before the T&C change will receive the cards.

just got stung on this one - got an paypal email for a $16 deduction - too slow with the paypal cancel so looks a too bad so sad situation (unless I do a paypal dispute?)

I had it on my credit card, they cancelled it immediately. Then i logged in my account and deleted the credit card from account information
yeah, forgot about it and have been charged $16 from my paypal account. Not sure whether to cancel subscription and cut all loses or try and wait for gift card to come( highly doubt any time soon).
cancelled my subscription both on website as well as paypal on Monday and today I get an email from them that the payment via Paypal failed and I need to update payment details.
Ridiculous..and yes I haven't received any gift card yet! Thank god for paypal!
To all who were charged the extra $16: if you cancel now you should get a pro-rata refund. Since they charged the $16 5 days in advance and they say they take up to 5 days to process cancellations, that should mean you get everything back. Good luck!

Not an assumption - teri is right. i have confirmed by talking to their customer service people.
If you call them up this is what they will tell you and is their standard policy. Just cancel the subscription within a few days and you will get the full amount back as you haven't received any of the services being paid for (yet).
Even if you wait until after the initial 28 days and then cancel, it is my understanding it will only cost you 1/4 of the 28 day subscription, i.e. you will get a refund for 3/4 of the subscription.

Why did their system charge us on the 23rd, when we took out a 30 days subscription on the 1st?
I cancelled my PayPal authority on Saturday night and received this email first thing this morning :)
Sent them a cancellation email, they said OK cancelled. Cancelled my PayPal authorisation and then got an email two days later saying my PayPal payment had been declined. Hah. Bunch of cons. No word on gift voucher.
Everyone - no need to worry. Even if you have been charged, you can call them up and cancel your subscription and get your money back (except the $1 for the current period). I did this and the lady explained that they give you back your money, pro-rata basis. So if you cancel within the previous subscription period (I.e. next few days) you get the full amount for the next period refunded it just might take a couple of business days.
