    Worst. Description. Ever.

    • +6

Cut him some slack, its via his mobile phone, although it could have waited as it's not going to go away soon.

      • +1

Exactly, there was no need to post as was. I never negged him though, I just pointed out the obvious ;)

        • FYI guys, my first post was made when there was literally a deal that said something along the lines of "cheap google drive" and that was about it ;)

        • Yes, very kind of you not to neg him with your awesome mighty power and showing some mercy. Praise and adoration to you for not negging.

        • -2

          Troll much?

    • +39

Not my first post. Feel free to call me names. Just no kissing on the lips.

      • +10

that's not what your mum said

        • +2

          So paintoad is leeroy's brother?

  • +7

    NSA certified ;)

    also not directly related but
    http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/security-it/google-encrypts-chi…

    • +3

If you want more security, use www.mega.co.nz

The encryption is done at your end and they never see the password or cleartext.

      50gb is free.

      • +1

You can also use something such as TrueCrypt or whatever to encrypt any files you send to any of the services if that's important to you.

        • +1

Can you use truecrypt on a file by file basis inside a synced folder? I was hoping to use truecrypt but didn't want it to re-upload an entire volume everytime I changed a single file in a folder.

        • For file-by-file encryption, use AxCrypt or one of the recommended alternatives:

          http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-file-encryption-ut…

Truecrypt's encrypted container "volumes" are fixed in size from the time they are created. It's not intended for individual file storage.

Last time I checked, Google Drive copies the an entire file each time you make a change to it, no matter how small. So if you add a tiny file to a huge TrueCrypt volume file, Google Drive would copy the entire TrueCrypt volume each time.

As an alternative, DropBox does what you're looking for, where it only copies the parts of the file (blocks) that have changed.

Don't forget to install httpseverywhere in your browser if you haven't already, folks.

  • -8

is it for a year or forever? $99 for a year is no deal to me

    • +9

It's per month, and I hope you're joking when you say that 10TB of space is not worth $99 a month.

    • -4

Plenty of cheaper options out there. (Yday's post about bix.com using the HP lunk is 50gb for free)
This is still more expensive then their older yearly pricing.

  • +14

now all we need is the average Aussie internet upload speed to increase 10x fold first ! Can't imagine trying to upload 10TB of data with our current upload speed caps heh

    • The average upload available for a personal internet plan is only about 1Mbps (I think Telstra offer 2Mbps on their 100Mb cable plan). At 1Mbps it would take 883 days to upload 10TB of data.

But then the 10TB plan is more designed towards corporate use, and corporate internet plans can exceed 10Mbps upload (Depending on the company and the price, I think over 100Mbps upload is available)

      • Non-Issue.

It's not a dumpsite for BluRays, constant up/down of 50gb, let alone 10 flippin TB.

        • Never said it was an issue, I was just pointing out how long it would take to upload 10TB of data at the current average Australia upload speed… It was more a point of interest than anything.

        • Imagine 1 milllllion tb?!

          Cool story bro

      • That is interesting regarding the upload, I thought it was 8Mbps? 2 is pretty shocking.

    • -3

I heard of a technology called FTTH but luckily the Liberals got voted in and now have a "mandate" on every single aspect of the Australian peoples lives so they can save us from that.

      • -3

FTTH will still be available, it's just it will need to be paid for by the customer. I knowing paying for stuff is a foreign logic to Labor/Green supporters.

        • Our debt has gotten bigger since liberals i.e. they are spending more on us on our behalf that we aren't paying for… awkward much?

      • +2

I know I'm gonna get downvoted but why don't people question why we're installing a service that other countries are upgrading from to FTTH? It's purely political rather than practical.

        • Isn't it obvious? Australia is a huge country with a tiny population. This population sparsity means certain technologies aren't economically practical.

Same reason European countries have fantastic roads (and higher speed limits), whereas ours are goat trackers.

  • +1

I just discovered, this limit actually shares with how much storage you are using for your Gmail account. I have less than 1mb of data on my Google Drive currently, but my used space is already at 0.98GB which matches the size of my Gmail account

    • +3

All Google accounts should have 15GB already. Not sure why you don't…

      • +1

I do have 15GB, my point is that Drive space is shared with Gmail, so the 1GB I've used in Gmail is being deducted from my Drive storage.

No biggie really, but was just interesting to see it's not separate.

        • +2

They consolidated it some time ago.

All space for all Google services come out of the same bucket. It used to be X GB for mail and 10GB for Drive. Now it's just 15GB flat for everything.

It makes it easier for them to add more services without creating new buckets to store it.

  • Fix title.

  • I'm still on the legacy $20 for 80Gb per year plan. I don't need the extra 20Gb but this definitely brings the pricing down closer to the older plans (but those are still better value for those who have them).

    • My brother in law is on the 80GB legacy plan and he said the same thing when I showed him this new pricing. However, the 80GB legacy plan is 25c per GB while the new 100GB plan is 24c per GB.
      :)

    • They don't offer annual pricing for the new plans. Keep it in mind if moving.

      • Good point. But isn't month-to-month usually considered to be a good thing? (Obviously unless there's some kind of discount for paying a year in advance)

  • +4

I'm still on the legacy plan of:

    Legacy plan
    20 GB @ $5.00/year

Also for some reason I got 16GB Extra on top. (I think its the free one).

    pretty happy with that :)

  • What's the upload size limit for Drive?

  • +1

I am still on 10Gb, waiting for the upgrade.

    • install quickoffice = another 15Gb extra.
    • But only for a limited time, unfortunately.

  • +2

Now they just need to make the Google Drive client not suck!

  • +5

Very nice. I personally use Dropbox, so hopefully this will force Dropbox to drop their prices too…

    • +3

Considering they're now offering the smallest amount for free (amongst their competitors such as Box, OneDrive and Google Drive) they will have to boost the free amount and decrease their prices to compete.

I am hopeful this will occur soon, I still prefer the Dropbox client over Drive.

  • +7

BANG! Been on the 50gb plan ($2.50/mth) for ages. Just not enough storage for me, and too tight to upgrade. I have 2x external hdd + Drive (running on 3 machines) for alk my photos & docs.

One terrible thing about Drive, and it's ignored by Google… Creating duplicates! Copy 50gb of your drive data onto another machine (to save up/down)… Drive will duplicate it all again (until limit is reached).

I'm blown away that the king of the cloud makes such "dumb" software.

    • +6

I agree. Google Drive is horrible. Nothing beats Dropbox for smart syncing. I don't know why google does not just copy the way Dropbox works!

      • I use google drive for my business. Works perfectly, could you explain why it's horrible?

        • +1

          See two posts above yours.

        • Basically the duplicate issue. It also modifies dates of files a lot. I want to duplicate files directly on multiple machines. Google Drive is also horrible at dealing with duplicate files if someone happens to work on the same one. Dropbox just safes a conflicted copy.

        • I guess it depends on what you want it to do. For me I can upload files and access them from anywhere on any computer or phone. I'm guessing that your problem is caused by having the program installed directly to your PC? I use drive through the browser on my PC and the app on my devices.

        • @gilbarc/ I was asking funkyblue, I had already seen numbnuts reasoning.

        • Do you use any app to upload the data? I found gdrive very unfriendly to use. Very slow speed!
          Dropbox is awesome although pricy.

        • +1

The point of Google Drive was to install it on your PC and have it sync everything. You would think a company as big as Google would see the best in the market and duplicate it. Instead they ignore user complaints.

          https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/Yjmkd4n…
Response from 2012, it is being "looked at"

          https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/drive/resy…

Nope, just told to redownload. Meanwhile Dropbox can resync a 50Gb folder with ease!

        • Well perhaps I don't use it properly but it does exactly what I want it to do ;)

        • @deepdag

I just use the browser. Files aren't usually much larger than 10mb.

    • My mistake, technically. I'm actually on a 25Gb plan. The other 25gb is a google freebie.

Here's what the plan change looks like:
      http://i57.tinypic.com/2nlb91e.jpg

  • Ive commited to sky/onedrive. I hope ms plays ball. Good value, if only it was available 6 months ago.

  • I moved away from Google for my photo storage needs when they increased their pricing. Originally I was on a legacy 20GB for $5 a year, but then they changed to the monthly pricing and I moved all my stuff to Amazon Cloud Drive ($25 for 50GB per year, $50 for 100GB per year).

I'm at the point now where I have used about 75% of my 50GB. I really like the way Cloud Drive works and I kinda trust Amazon with my long term storage needs. Yes, this Google deal works out 50% cheaper than what I am paying but I think I'll just stay where I am. Amazon may review their pricing if they notice a lot of people start jumping ship to Google's new lower pricing.

    • I pay around ten bucks a month to backup a terabyte of photos to Amazon s3 glacier - works out about the same as this new Google pricing structure, but google avoids the hoops associated with cold storage. Might be worth looking into if its just for archiving…

  • Got an email from them:

Changes to your Google storage plan
We’re contacting you because you currently pay for additional storage across Google Drive, Gmail and Google+ photos, and we wanted to let you know that we just launched new and improved storage plans.
We'll automatically adjust your plan by 11 April 2014 to give you more storage at a lower rate.
    Your current plan is:
25 GB for $2.49 USD per month
    Your new plan will be:
100 GB for $1.99 USD per month
No action is required, but you can select a different plan at any time.

  • Does anyone know of a decent storage site that lets you use FTP so you can mount the drive in your computer over the internet using an actual standard?

    • Skydrive/Onedrive supports WebDAV I believe, at least it used to. It's not ftp but is a standard.

    • +1

Amazon S3 ? If you don't want to make up your own client you can use cloudberry drive (about $40 I think) - which treats the s3 storage as a drive on your PC. S3 is more expensive though than google.

  • At work we use DropBox installed. Works well but if someone has the file you are working on open it creates a conflicted copy.

How does Google Drive handle this? I haven't tried using the installed version, but my coworker and I did work on the same spreadsheet, via our browser, at the same time. I could see him typing in the cell in real time. Worked well.

    • +1

This is one thing that Google are doing well - assuming your using Docs as well that is…

I believe Box works better for that. I haven't tested it, but the support person I spoke to about using it for a business said that it detects if the file is open and prompts the user before proceeding.

Box's feature set is more business orientated as well.

    • In my experience, lots of conflicted files, even when I edit the file myself. Maybe I belong to the stone age and i should go back there

  • Which is the main folder the one on the computer or the one on the web ? Which one syncs to which. Sorry for newbie question.

  • +2

    This is going to severely mess with the upcoming Box and Dropbox IPOs ;
they are some crazy prices being offered by google.

  • Also for photo backups you can use flikr for free.

  • How do you guys handle making backups of folders on your computer - not really wanting to duplicate the files into the google folder or use the google folder.

    • +1

      Symlinks?

  • Also note that idrive has dropped their pricing

  • +1

I dunno if anyone uses Google Drive here, I used it for business before and it was very bad, especially for editing files on the spot. I had a couple pc, mac and smart phone connected to it. It usually duplicate files when I save and the whole thing is a mess.

Imagine you work on excel for a couple hours, save and voila! You now have 2 files, are you going to delete the newly created one or the original one? Or spend time checking everything again? Or just leave it and you later have a bunch of duplicates? And that goes onnnnn..

Not forget to mention the whole file sharing settings of google drive is a nightmare, in fact i'd rather have a nightmare.

Switched to dropbox and i am happy even though it only gives 2Gb free, i can work around 2Gb no problem

    • No idea what you're talking about.

We have used collaborative spreadsheets at work for years, with zero problems.

    • I agree - the Google Drive application for syncing folders on your PC seems like an unfinished product to me.

I don't like to complain about a free service but the duplicate issue caused me hours of work cleaning it all up. I've stopped using it now - though I'm still a fan of Google Apps. If you create files via Google Apps it all works very well even with multiple people all working on the same file.

If you have an Apple device I know that Box were giving away 50GB free a while ago if you downloaded the ios app. Not sure whether that offer is still around.
