Any ideas for best credit card company that includes international travel insurance for free?

Hi,

going to the US later in the year with hubby and thought it might be a good idea to apply for a credit card that includes travel insurance so that we dont have to fork out the extra few hundred dollars ATLEAST for reasonable quality insurance.

pref looking for a no annual fee card or if this isn't possible then a low annual fee.
I don't earn a huge amount so cant be a high roller c/c.
and I know some cards need you to pay for your flights to get insurance, I cant do this, but can pay all my insurance (or the minimum required to be eligible).

any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pretty sure most people are able to get a Gold credit card.

This International Travel Insurance is only available to
Platinum MasterCard and Gold MasterCard cardholders.
These cardholders, become eligible for this International
travel insurance when, before leaving Australia on an
overseas journey, they have a return overseas travel ticket,
and A$500 of their pre-paid travel costs (i.e. travel costs
paid for prior to leaving Australia

  • similar to a previous post I've seen on here, have a look at policy as free insurance may not provide the quality cover that you're after. Also, be aware that usually there's an excess with those free insurance policy that you have to pay for each insurance claim - if you're unlucky enough, you'll be able to make multiple insurance claims on a single trip.

Sometimes a paid travel insurance policy with $0 excess doesn't cost that much.

  • Another thing to look out for, is the credit card travel insurance requirements as to what needs to be paid on the credit card to be covered. For example if all airfares have to be paid on the credit card, the travel agents fee to cover the credit card payment could be more than the travel insurance premium.
I normally use 28degrees credit card for overseas travel as it has a good exchange rate & no foreign currency conversion fee. For the travel insurance I have used previously Citibank and CBA credit cards, but as I have not had to make a claim yet, cant say how good or not they are…..

  • Option 1 - is the ANZ Visa Platinum card. You only need to pay $250 of travel or accommodation expenses to qualify for the travel insurance. First years annual fee is waived (normally $87) and continued to be waived if you spend $20,000 per year on the card. I had this card but cancelled due to lack of rewards points.

Option 2 - Westpac have a promotion (until 31/3) that gets you their Platinum card waived of fees for the life of the card. It includes the complimentary travel insurance however I dont know anything about the qualifying requirements - go here http://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/low-… Like the ANZ card there are no rewards points but no annual fee no matter how much you spend.

Option 3 - (maybe) Citibank Platinum or Select cards. I say maybe because the promotion was due to end on the 28/2 although its still up on their website. Free for the life of the cards plus reward points on the dollars that you spend. Go here - http://www.citibank.com.au/familyandfriends/ The card you apply for depends on your income. This is the card I use now. Also consider opening a Citibank Plus transaction account. This will allow you to withdraw money from overseas ATM's without getting slugged with foreign ATM fees and international transaction fees (depending on the ATM that you use).

Like a previous poster said - get the 28 degrees Master Card to avoid transaction fees on overseas purchases.
