  • What's the benefit of picking the 4GB version of the 270x to this 2GB version?

    • +1

Depends on the resolution you use or if you plan on getting a 4k setup in the near future…

For 1080p 2GB is sufficient considering the limits of this card.

I would highly recommend the 270x Sapphire Vapor @ $255, stays much cooler and level pegs the Toxic in most benchmarks…

      • Thanks for the reply. I'm considering doing some upgrades to my 3 year old pc. I've been reading up on cryptocurrency but I'm still very new to the game. Basically if I was going to dabble in it, I want a PC I can still use for browsing while it hashes away. Is the 270x Sapphire Vapor the way to go for a relatively introductory card for this sort of thing?

        • +1

The Vapor-X OCs very easily due to the low temps, as a result no matter what you do lest it be hashing LTC or playing BF4 it stays cool, the single biggest difference between this and the Vapor is the stock clock speeds and the available headroom…

This review should help, there are many more out there tho: http://benchmarkreviews.com/7361/sapphire-radeon-r9-270x-vap…

        • Awesome thanks

        • The VaporX version might cool slightly better but it's not going to make a difference in the end. It's also only clocked a tiny bit higher which might not even get you 1fps more, but then again it's only $25. I'd rather pay another 25 and get a 760 (though not good for mining[but I'm not sure if mining is even profitable for the electricity you use]), if not just the DualX version.

        • No. Doesns't matter what brand 270x you buy you will be very frustrated if you try to mine crypto's while still trying to use your PC for general use. Having a low temp doesn't mean you'll be able to use your PC for general use when you need to have an intesity value of 19 to pull a good hashrate. Higher the Intensity = More computing power goes towards mining.

If you want to browse the internet or watch video's then I strongly suggest a 280x which only need an Intensity value of 13 to max out their hashrate leaving plenty of room for browsing/youtube/games.

You also need to take into consideration that the 270x is alot more ineffiecent than the 280x. So while initially you get a better price you will end up paying more in electricity (especially given the high cost of power in Australia).

TL;DR The 270x makes a decent secondary card but if you still want to use your PC while mining it's a bad choice.

        • Thanks for the insight. I'll consider the 280x then, but I think I'll have to wait til I break into my first job to get one (recent grad)

If your mobo has 2 PCI-E slots then no reason why you can't use your current graphics card as the main card and then use a 270x to mine with. Doesn't help if you want to play games but you could probably pay off the 270x in a pretty short time if you choose a good coin to mine. You could even look towards a 270 (non x) as they pull around about the same hashrate.

        • I'll have to check compatibility with the MOBO. My current graphics card is a low end GT220. At the very least I'd have to replace the current 500W power supply I believe.

        • Ah Drivers would be an issue then. Ignore my post ;p

        • Did you guys even click on the link and look at the benchmarks ? And yes it does matter what brand you choose as this uses a Chamber Vapor design, the little Bro of the Toxic (considered the best)…

Besides this beats or is marginally behind the GTX 760 (which I own) and the 7950 considering the cheapest 760 is $320~ and the cheapest 280x is $380~, and looking at a first intro card it seems perfect, and suggesting that a $130~ cheaper card is more inefficient lies in your budget and not the card's fault… lol

        • Sorry I was talking strictly Cryptocurrency mining. For gaming then yes cooling matters and sapphire are definetly great cards in that respect.

No offence, all this "Crypto Currency" sh*t has done nothing but increase the cost of CPUs and high end GFX cards for everyday joe blo like myself that loves gaming.

I bought a 6950 2 years ago for $220 and now a $300 card can barely exceed it by anything more than a few pixels. It seems that now I need to fork our $400+ cards (280x) to actually get a decent boost., thats almost a 100% increase because you idiots out there are mining garbage. Oh, not to mention, the massive load of energy you're consuming just to mine a few stupid virtual dollars.

Get off your fat arse and do proper work and earn wages instead of this stupid method. All this virtual currency will eventually die off and you idiots will be left scratching your useless heads

    • +1

      LOL

The 6950 released with a RRP of $339 in Australia.

Not many people are making a living off cryptocurrencies and if you are then you've invested serious money into it (The sort of money that doesn't come from centrelink). Most do it as a hobby or because they see potential in bitcoin.

How about you get off your fat arse and go earn a better wage so you can buy a better graphics card.

So you're telling me that the Gfx cards now compared to 2 years+ are just about on par?

If so, you're definitely living in a cabbage patch, go to any IT Reseller and see for yourself.

cryptocurrency is just a fad for nerds who want to sound smart in front of their peers. you can earn more money getting Certified and having a better role, thats something to boast about. Not a loud machine at home churning useless numbers.

I dont need to go earn a better wage to buy a hyper-inflated card because douchebags like you support coin mining

Mining is just something that piqued my interest. This is not a one or the other scenario where one either gets a job or gets into mining. I'm all for upskilling myself with education/certification etc.

Also I'm extremely new to this but I ask the question: If AMD cards have been recognised as the better choice for mining, why not buy NVIDIA if you are a gamer to separate the markets?

    • +1

      I hope you know that the 270x is just a rebranded 7870. 280x is a rebranded 7970oc.

Mining hasn't increased cost of Nvidia so go buy one of their GPU's. Even though AMD's still winning on most price to performance entry points.

It's also worth mentioning that while the retail price of the cards has risen so has resale value.

I'd tell you to go educate yourself but you obviously know better than all the "nerds". Just FYI I'd say theres a tonne more "nerds" in the gaming world then there is in crypto.

      • the 'tonne more nerds' depends if you meant crypto as in cryptocurrency or cryptography ;) chalk and cheese actually.

  • Its not just ATI/AMD, nVidia has been affected.

Low stock levels and high prices of these cards.

News flash; Bitcoin mining using GFX GPU is obsolete, unless you have a dedicated mining rig, there's no point. I saw an idiot on gumtree trying to sell off his 7970 for $300 he said (not overclocked, excellent for mining)

I wanted to slap that person to the side curb, mining on the GPU is probably worse off than OCing in terms of life of product.

These vendors know what the trends are, the difference between a hardcore gamer spending $400 vs a miner is huge.

Gamer: Im going to save up my money and eat noodles still I get a GTX780
Miner: Im going to buy a GTX780 anyway< i dont care if it's $500+ I will get that money back from mining
Vendor: I say we hike up the costs of these cards because idiots will still buy it
Game: WTF is going on, I cant buy a decent Gfx anymore

    • News flash. No one's mining bitcoins on GPU's. Show's how much you know.

    • I share your frustration with miners driving the price up and thus retailers taking advantage (to be fair I would too) I just can't see the prices coming down for these cards any time soon and it pisses me off. Anyway they're mining Litecoin not Bitcoin.

  • Wait you guys actually think miners have an impact on global GPU prices o.O. kinda find that hard to believe
