28 Degrees Vs ANZ Plat Rewards

Hi Guys,

Just want to get some feedback on credit cards. I am lucky enough to be in a position where I don't really need one (Debit card seems to be working fine)
However, I would like to do a little bit more international travelling this year.

Out of all the card features I've notice, insurence is the most appealing to me, especially medical.

Just wondering is I could get some feed back on these 2, and if there is a better suggestion out there. Thanks

  • i use the westpac platinum with free travel insurance to pay for my tickets when flying and then i use the 28 degrees to pay for things (i have a 1500 limit as standard and then i top it up with like 4-5k depending on my needs and just use it as a normal credit card) i dont withdraw cash as there is an advance fee now i think.
i usually take 2k in cash if its a longer trip. if going to europe or asia where is more cash centric then take slightly more.
westpac card also gives you extended warranty.

Yeah I used to use the 28 degrees with my own money but since they now charge a fee I've switched to Citibank Plus debit.

  • Hmm.. well that throws a spanner in the works..

I guess I need to re-look at my benefits.
I cant see myself using or accumulating enough point..

I guess its really the travel insurence im after

    hmmm..

    • Just pay for insurance. I do. I've compared CC insurance with actual insurance in the past and the CC insurance is usually much more limited.

My wife and I only paid $129 combined for coverage (with SCTI) for our trip to Vietname at the end of the year. That includes my pre-existing condition.

Covermore has a good policy as well.

      • cc insurance is generally good enough for most people but ymmv so read the pds carefully :)

        • Clearly it depends on each person, however with insurances it isn't what a policy covers so much as what they exclude. The CC versions are often reasonable but they have too many exclusions for my tastes. If I can spend $1000+ on a holiday, I can afford $60 to make sure I'm adequately covered (which I usually am through my CC coverage too).

      how so?

  • 28 degrees master card (Wizard clear advantage) is very good when overseas. No fees and excellent exchange rate. I get much better exchange rates than from overseas bank. Highly recommended. Just add funds to it before you withdraw, and you wont be charged any interest. You can use it overseas like a debit card.

    • As mentioned above, they now charge fees when you withdraw cash. You may have missed their email about it a few months ago. Still useful as a credit card but not to withdraw cash.

      • I hadn't seen this change on withdrawing cash - can you please attach link to this new information. In the past I have topped up the balance with my own cash to withdraw at the local overseas ATM.

        • You'll need to log in and read the PDS as it's not available unless you do but it's in there. They also have an announcement about it when you log in. They don't explicitly say "including when accessing your own money", but they now have a flat 3% cash advance rule for all ATM transactions.

The definition of a cash advance under the PDS is "Cash obtained under 2.1(b)" … "and a cash withdrawal of any amount from any credit balance on the account".

Your credit balance includes the additional money you put on the card, ie you don't have a debit balance.

They send an email late last year about it.
