If you do get a virgin money card you need to be extra vigilant. They like to make 'mistakes' that result in them getting more money from you.

I paid mine off and asked to cancel it because they kept increasing the interest rate after the 'honeymoon' period. They offered to refund the annual fee and give me a lower rate which I accepted.

A week or two after the annual fee was refunded they charged it again.

Also make sure you get paper statements, they will conveniently not send you an email statement and then start charging you late fees every few days without any correspondence.

Other than that it can be a good deal, just keep an eye on your statements and expect to have to call them regularly to call them up on their 'mistakes' to make sure they get fixed.

I hadn't had an issue with the card in 3 years, until the first time I wanted to check/dispute a charge..and it opened up a whole storm of crap! Definitely agree you need to be prepared to have to call them alot if anything goes wrong with the card!

I get an e-mail telling me my statement is ready, and you can always go online to check - but the online banking is a bit of a pain. Doesn't remember username, and have to use on-screen keyboard to type password which is a pain-(slow to login and then SMS password to see your account.

Also, the two-for-one airfare deals are really more like two-for-1.5 - that is, the discount is only on the base fare but then you have to pay taxes for both, plus you can only buy it on 'regular' fares, not on sale fares, so you can get cheaper deals sometimes without it. Oh - the biggest fault, you have to buy 21 days in advance. No impromtu trips for you.

Still, a good deal on $0 first year fee, and 10k bonus points.

  • "Standard earn rate of 1 Velocity Point per $1 spent up to $1,500 per month"
This limit is really annoying and unnecessary. IIRC, Velocity AMEX cards do not have such a limit?

But this is totally worth it, given no annual fee for the first year - just for the 20k bonus points (and 6mths interest free), even if you don't use the TWO41 bonus.

Velocity AMEX don't have that limit :)

This card can be worth the $129 is you use the TWO41…but it's getting harder to use that I've found…

  • The only good thing about this deal is the bonus 10,000 points.

I signed up to it a couple of years ago, because of the TWO41 offer @ $99 p.a. Barely benefited from it, because you could only get the free flight if the promotional fares are available - but despite that, you can't buy a promotional fare ticket - you have to buy a regular fare ticket. And like someone mentioned above, credit card fees etc.

Was surprised it went up to $129. I was going to cancel the card and told them I didn't think they were offering enough value @ $99 and they said, errr - no, it's $129… shock horror. So they waived the annual fee for a year.

Citibank CC Free for Life offer came round after that so I gave up this card anyway to get the CTB card.

  • We're flying to US in June, might fly with Virgin so it would be ideal to get this Credit card right?
    Thanks

No - domestic aussie flights. Would only help if you need to get to a different destination to start your US leg.

It won't help get the TWO41 one deal. As danyool said, that's only on domestic flights.

You'd be better off getting the Velocity AMEX which doesn't have an annual fee, but for every $1 you spend on Virgin services (in this case flights) you earn 2 points. So for a flight to the US you'll earn about 2400 points..won't get you a flight, but if you're trying to earn Velocity points, that's the most you'll probably earn (along with whatever you earn for the actual trip). Plus if you sign up for that one you get a bonus 7,500 points at the moment…
