Belong (Telstra Comp) Phone+ADSL2 $80 for 250GB, Free Local Calls $1 Router Free Setup No Contract

110

Hi Ozbargainers, after half a year of leeching off the site I have finally decided to give back to the community, n00b here so let me know if there's anything that I'm doing wrong.

Belong ( A Division of Telstra) is offering No Lock In Contract phone & internet plans with No Activation Fee (Normally $80) and $1 for Home Network Gateaway (HNG - Normally $99) including delivery.

You can choose between $70 per month for 70GB or $80 per month for 250GB bundle plan, both comes with line rental included and Unlimited Local Calls as well as calls to 1223, 13, 1300, 1800 and 000 numbers.
Note, a $299 fee will apply if a new line installation or cabling work is required.

Edit: It appears that this plan is also available for Cable Customer. The plan is perfect for those that only needs temporary connection. You can also get broadband without homephone and save $20 per month ($60 for 250GB or $50 for 70GB) but you will need an active landline.

I signed up to the plan because as I was transferring my existing service from TPG to Exetel, I was told Exetel cannot proceed because my line is not on the Telstra switch board. So now I am back on Telstra's equipment via Belong's 70GB Plan and I just submitted an order to go with Exetel $39.99 Plan whilst scoring a cheap Home Network Gateaway in the process. All other methods to transfer that I found at the moment will incur at least $300+ fees.

PS: I also got a $20 complimentary phone card in the email they sent me, it can be used for interstate, mobile and overseas calls.

Its an expensive plan. $80 per month for 250GB??

    • I pay $110 for 200gb. But I bet my internet is faster then 99.9% of people here

If you are going to correct somebody at least get your facts right - ass as in asinine, as in donkey, considered traditionally to be a very stupid, stubborn animal.
As per the phrase 'you really made an ass of yourself' - used because you made yourself look like an egotistical moron.

        • -3

How do you know he wasn't trying to call me an arse? It's pretty funny to get on your high horse(or ass) and get all passive aggressive which in turn kinda makes you look like an arse… yes I said it… you are an ARSE :)

PS I wasn't trying to sound like a douche, I was just stating what is most likely true. Don't be mad because you have slow internet lol :P

Funny as - he didnt even address you, he corrected the posted after you, Devils Advocate.

And you can tell he was calling him an ass because he used the word ass. Language is cool like that.
The rules say I should report you for a personal attack but it is just to damned funny (in the most ironic, unintentional sense) to want it to ever leave.

Just FYI have had broadband for most of the time since 1998, It has lost all novelty, 15mbit is plenty for me, wouldnt trade my clean air and huge yard, rolling countryside etc in easy reach of the city for a terabit line. Spose it could be that i have a life. Not much of one, but clearly more than somebody who measures theirs by home bandwidth.

          Priceless, thank you so much

        • You do know that an ass is a donkey, right?

And for the record, I was taking a swipe at the person who needlessly corrected you on the most insignificant of typos, for behaving like a douchebag (ass is easier to type, but commensurate in definition, as explained by our learned friend Mycosys).

          Well that escalated quickly…

I didn't needlessly correct him/her. People NEED to become aware of correct grammar.

      • I pay $110 for 200gb. But I bet my internet is faster then 99.9% of people here

I pay $99/month (line rental included) for 500GB on Telstra Ultimate Cable — my downloads max out at 13MB/s, which is plenty fast for me. Are you on the NBN or cable or something else? :)

        • That's a great deal. So 13MB as in your connection is like 130mbit?

Is this a new plan? Link please

        • +2

Telstra advertises Ultimate Cable as being 100Mbps, but they generally provision it higher, so in practice I get it at 130Mbps. :)

Is this a new plan? Link please

No, it's an old plan which I think they last offered back in 2011 (the deal was 200GB for $78, but you could upgrade to 500GB for $20 more): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55820

        • +1

That's heaps good. I got the same cable and I hit almost 120mbps. But I also don't bundle so I pay a bit more. I barley use 120gb so but it would be nice to know I could have 500. Lucky lad!

        • Didn't know they had 500GB plans back then, else I would've upgraded.. I was on the 200GB which wasn't enough so I had to switch to their updated ones.

      • Why only 200gb? I pay $113 for 500gb.. To be honest Telstra is expensive but I've never had any problems with them.

        • Good question, it looks like the plans have changed. Although I am unbundled(I pay only for the cable with no contracts) so that could be why. I think i'll chat with a Telstra rep tomorrow and see what they can do for me, thanks.

**edit. I think I may know why. I have the Ultimate bundle which is 100mbps+ which is damn fast. Faster then NBN is at the moment I believe. They charge an extra $20/month for that. If you go here an enter your address the option for the super fast cable shows up at the bottom of the plan

          https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/home-broadband/

    • The deal for him was to swap to exetel at $40/mo and get a piece of hardware free. Although I'm not sure why exetel couldn't simply take him. Telstra tends to lie about their coverage to reseller's though (at least they did with me).

But if I read correctly, it also says 250gb = $60 if you don't connect the phone? I'm not sure that makes sense "You can also get broadband only without the home phone and save $20 per month, again no contract =D"

      • Yes, basically you can get naked broadband (without the landline) for $60 that comes with 250GB.

        • +3

Not correct, you still need an active PSTN. I just asked their online chat thing then.

So you either take it in a bundle, or have separate landline rental with another provider (reselling the Telstra line).

        • okay, edited

    • hi friends, I'm paying $65 for 120gb on Optus. are there much cheaper options available?

    • That's a bargain. I pay $79 for 200GB at the moment.

  • I'm actually quite tempted. My speeds on iinet have dropped by 20% lately for no real reason, and I'm miffed that I pay more for my plan than people who join fresh, and can only change if I lock in for two years.
This deal sounds alright to me, if I get Telstra service.

    • Been using Belong for around 2 weeks now, speed compared to TPG is a bit quicker i find but not by much, the real noticeable difference is that there's no dropouts like before. My only reservation to their service is that they took more than 10 days before being able to switch me in, and experienced a whole afternoon of downtime before internet came on the next morning.

      • while I was on TPG infrastructure, my line dropped every 4 hours or less. When Iinet took over Netspace I got moved to Iinet infrastructure and it was rocksolid. But now my speeds are dropping.

        • +1

okay we probably had the same problem with TPG, everyday I will at least restart my router twice, the worst period was like once every half hour…but because I'm cheap I rather kill my brain cells to save a few bucks.

If you dont mind paying a little more, according to whirlpool Internode is consistently the fastest and most stable ISP out there with great service, you might be able to give it a try. I would if I won the lottery tomorrow xD.

        • Yeah big plus for internode. Very stable.

  • If only they had Cable plans, being a "Division of Telstra" and all… :D

    • OP edited and said it is available for Cable customers, but I am unable to find any information on that on their website. Does anyone know (or OP know) if we need to call up to take advantage of the offer?

I am currently on a 200GB $78 Ultimate bundle with the landline (which I do not use) bundled.

Is a "naked" cable connection available for $60 a month?

If so, a $18 saving per month along with an extra 50GB is tempting.

      • I spoke to a rep and it seems they don't have any plans for Cable now or in the near future… sigh

        • I understand what OP is trying to say. If you are on a Cable bundle plan, you can get the "naked" Belong package on the bundled landline. So it means you can have BOTH the Cable and ADSL2+ internet connection, but of course you'll be paying for two internet connections.

  • -4

    "line rental", how 2005 quaint.

    • +1

Still a bunch of people that have no other real option than to pay for line rental in order to get a decent broadband service. Me being one of them.

      • Sad state of affairs. Where's that NBN again?

        • +1

          Liberal's bin…

  • +1

Just had a chat session with them. Basically a Telstra product, so on Telstra infrastructure. No lock-in, $1 modem, unlimited phone calls to local, 1300, 13, 1800 and 000. But for interstate and international you need a call card (not a problem for me - I have a separate VoIP phone for that).
Sounds like better service and more quota than I currently get for the same price. I saw Exetel, but they are a reseller I believe, and I want to make sure I don't end up on dodgy infrastructure. Had bad experiences being hooked up to TPG infrastructure once.

  • Live inner Melbourne and not eligible. Bit ordinary.

  • The issue with belong is that it's only available in VERY select areas, I've lived in various parts of the Brisbane CBD and none have been eligible.

  • Quite a nice price but some problems for me. They don't provide silent numbers!

    Also, they say this:

The Belong Bundle includes a limited phone service that you can connect your Belong modem and home phone to. The following devices will not work over your Belong phone line:

    Back to Base alarms
    Securedial alarms
    FaxStreams
Foxtel program purchase via your phone line
    Analogue modems

So, presumably it's some kind of VoIP service. I have an alarm so despite being in their service area, I can't switch.

    • They assured me it wasn't VoIP…

EDIT: just made a panicked phone call after having signed up earlier. I also require my alarm to work. The guy was very surprised, and had no idea this was published on their website. He was quite convinced that they use normal analogue phone lines, and did not think that this was the case at all. He has organised for a manager to call me back tomorrow to confirm.

Incidentally, they estimate the switchover process to take 10-15 business days, not 2-5 as stated in the signup email.

      • Please keep us posted on this.

        • I did not get a call back, and the Rep below did not answer my question, so I just phoned them up.
The lady I spoke with said that as long as my alarm calls a 13 number (and the necessary ADSL filters are placed 'before' the alarm, which in my case they are) then I should not have any problems.
So it's not a problem of the line being "VoIP", it's purely that certain numbers cannot be dialed.

The Reps are friendly enough, but it is disappointing having to chase them on something so fundamentally important. None of the Reps appear aware of the content of the website.

  • So does a Telstra Division = Telstra speeds?

    • They told me it's purely Telstra infrastructure. So yes.

      • Whilst it is on Telstra infrastructure it doesn't gaurantee the same speeds as their normal network. Number of users per node will make a difference to performance.
One could presume that their are some differences otherwise it would be available everywhere Telstra currently operates, it would just be a difference of plans, not suburbs.

  • incase anyone knows, is Optus Cable elegible to be swapped on to this deal using the same cable?

    • Neither Telstra or Optus resell their cable services.

  • Every time I see this sort of offer, I have to remind myself that it's meant for people who live more than 3-4km from the CBD, because it's what The Lovely and I refer to as "Saw You Coming" prices.

We've had TPG for five years - unlimited for $69 a month including landline - and have had so few problems that I am embarrassed when I recall how snarky I got with them when we had a 2-day outage in 2010 (part of which was due to bad router settings).

We get 17Mb/sec (~2MB/sec) and although faster is always better, it's not clear to me that it is that important… I'm happy so long as "Walking Dead" downloads before "True Detective" is finished playing (and US Sundays get crowded - Family Guy, American Dad, Simpsons, Walking Dead and True Detective).

We have Quickflix and Foxtel Play on our TV (and Ted and ABC iView and SBS OnDemand and whatnot), and an Android dongle on our non-smart TV that does the same stuff, and we routinely watch different stuff at the same time with no drama. Also… Jeebus knows how many phones and tablets are connected to wifi: 4 phones, an iPad and 2 Android tabs at least. Point is, we give our TPG setup the absolute berries, and it copes well.

We thought we might get a service decline when we moved from South Yarra (not because of suburb preferential treatment, but because we were only 420m from the DSLAM) - but there is no difference whatsoever.

UPDATE: I just checked… we're actually closer to our current DSLAM. Also, our Vaya 4G wifi hub-kerjigger actually downloads faster than our home ADSL2+ (as would be expected).

Telstra is the Microsoft of internet… and as Linux user, I don't mean that as a compliment.

  • Don't forget that turdball sais the deal with Telstra will be done by July.So that means nbn on cable by Xmas!

  • Sorry I'm a bit confused, OP states he/she wasn't on Telstra DSLAM, then applied to Belong, then joined Exetel. How does that work?
In my situation, I'm with Exetel already but on Optus DSLAM. The speed is total rubbish. So I want to be put on Telstra DSLAM. What is the best way for me to 'Belong'?

    • It can depend as to how the line is setup. Sometimes your carrier will have an IP phone service running on a phone line. In which case they'll need you to connect a new phone line and you'll need a new number; the new line would be charged @ $299. But sometimes it can be taken over without any cabling work at your property and no cost. You'd probably need to go ahead with the connection first and they'd tell you what it'd cost if anything before being connected.

In short, don't worry about the DSLAM stuff, just place an order for connection and they let you know when the order goes to the people that do the technical work on the order.

      • OK. Cheers.
Seems the OP, joined up to Belong, then immediately(?) churned to Exetel.

Which is what I'll probably do, as the Exetel 100Gb bundle is good at $39.

        • Yup, I still want to use a month worth of Belong service since i already paid for it. I around 2 weeks in with Belong and just submitted a churn request to Exetel on Friday. Hopefully they wont give me that "youre not on Telstra equipment we cant transfer" bs again.

I'm on Telstra (RIM/remote exchange) Zone 1, and when I plugged my address and phone into the site, I was told I couldnt have it. It took ages, so I'm going to try again today and talk to someone if it still says I cant. I dont have any analogue equipment on the line at all. But perhaps the RIM is an issue, which is just stupid.

[edit] and thats exactly it. They wont put you on Belong if you are on a RIM or TopHat
Here's some of the text of my chat just now
    Rachael
Thanks fro your patience, from the checks I've just done for you, it looks like you are too far away from your exchange to be eligible for the Belong service. We are only offering to customers who are within 2.5k distance from their local exchange.
    10:38 AM Guest
that makes no sense to me. I get excellent speeds on adsl2+ and my phone service is fine. I'm on a RIM and a remote exchange…
    10:39 AM Rachael
hmm.. let me double check for you.
    10:39 AM Guest
DA092 I think, cant remember, but its something like that
and because of that I am on a Telstra DSLAM
    10:40 AM Rachael
Oh okey, If that's the case then we are only operating straight to the exchange, not from the RIM or top hat.

Hi its Nicholas here from Belong,

Thanks for your interest around our services. I just wanted to take a moment to clear up a few things surrounding the information provided in the thread and clarify some questions that were asked.

    Q. Do Belong offer Cable?

    A. At Belong we don't offer a Cable service - We currently provide ADSL2+ from approx 400 selected exchanges nation-wide.

This also means if you are running through a RIM, CMUX, or TopHat, we would not be able to service your address, due to the nature of the infrastructure in place.

    Q. Does a Telstra Division = Telstra speeds?

    A. We only use Telstra ADSL2+ DSLAMs so you have the full quality and speed of the Telstra ADSL2+ network, but again, this is in selected Exchanges.

So in short, yes; "Division of Telstra" does = Telstra full speeds :)

    Q. Do Belong plans offer "Naked DSL"?

    A. The service we offer is not a Naked DSL service - an active PSTN fixed line is required for our ‘DSL only’ plans and the PSTN line comes included as part of our Bundle plans.

Your active PSTN line can be with another Carrier but would need to be on the Telstra Network to get Belong.

    Q. Is this a VoIP Service?

    A. The phone line is a traditional Voice Line (not VoIP) that allows for free local calls only. A Callaway Card is required to make other calls such as 1900, STD, and Mobile phone calls.

    Q. Why No Alarm System?

    A. This is due to the restricted phone line features in the Bundle. As Monitored B2B Alarm Systems, Foxtel using a phone line for its Return Path, and Dial-Up Modems need to call numbers that are restricted by our line, these devices will not work as intended which is why we advise they cannot be used with our service.
If you do require the ability for a device to dial out to a 1900, STD or Mobile number, we would suggest having an active line with another Carrier and taking up one of our ‘DSL only’ plans.

*Please note, if your B2B Alarm System is not monitored or plugged into the phone line, it does not always mean we can't supply you with an internet connection or Bundle. Please speak with us about your options.
*Please also note, if you have a phone line connected to your Foxtel, you can access On-Demand by changing to an IP Return Path with an internet connection. Please speak to your Foxtel Provider for more information on DigiPath and IP Return Path details.

    Q. Can you sign up to Churn away?

    A. Whilst we can't stop you from signing up and churning away, we do ask that you try our service and see how you like it. We won't lock you in for a lengthy period and we feel our products and service is what really sets us apart from other ISPs.

When you become part of the Belong community, you have access to Telstra’s ADSL2+ network with full 24/7 on-shore support, Belong customers are here because they choose to be :)

I hope this help and if you guys do have any other questions feel free to visit us at www.belong.com.au and jump on our live chat to find out more or call us on 1300Belong.

    • Hi,
I was supposed to get a call back from you guys about this.
Important question: if my alarm dials a 13 number, will it work?
      Please let me know ASAP.

    • -1

      No cable = fail.

  • It's like the Jetstar of Qantas. El cheapo air.
    El cheapo ADSL.

I just switched to Belong from TPG and a Telstra home phone plan. Decided to go on the 250GB bundle product for $80 a month which includes a limited phone service which works for me (The phone service has unlimited local calls, as well as calls to 1223, 13, 1300, 1800 and 000 numbers. The cost of those calls are included in your monthly fee, which means there are no extra charges. To make interstate, international and mobile calls you can use a calling card).

I must say one of the easiest sign up processes I have ever had ordered last Sunday, received modem Tuesday and line was transferred across by Friday. From there it was literally a matter of plugging in the modem and hey presto it all worked. It really was as easy as plug and play. So far have had no drop outs and speed seems good. FINALLY we have internet and a modem that works with no drop outs!

There is a promo on at the moment where you get the modem for $1 and $0 connection fee.

Lol.. made an account today, only one post here, and it sounds more like a sales pitch than an actual user story.

      Yeah, not suss at all.

      • Edit: nvm. Misread.
Belong says 2&3 weeks average… So yes, that is fast.

  • darn, just put my address in to Belong and it is not available to me, what is the next best option?

    • Hi,

It's Nicholas here from Belong why not give us a call at Belong so we can double check your details and see if we can get you up and running. Call 1300Belong.

I am with Club Telco and pay $52.25 a month for UNLIMITED data (comes to less than $50 out of my own pocket as I PayWave my bill at the Post Office with my ING Direct card). I have no contract and didn't pay any setup fees.

Furthermore, when I first moved into my place, it had no phone line connected (but had a phone line in the past) so Club Telco set it up for FREE (saved me the $59 connection fee to Telstra).

My breakdown is: $30 for phone line rental and $25 for UNLIMITED ADSL2+ (did I mention no contract?). They do charge you $50 per annum 'membership fee' but for that you get a 5% 'discount' for bundling your phone and broadband with them so for me it means the fee is effectively only $17.

As far as reliability, I have been with them for 20 months now and NEVER had an outage that lasted for more than 2 hours and even then, I would say I probably had only 4 or 5 outages in total throughout that time.

Problem is they do not offer my pricing anymore and now you will pay $40 for unlimited ADSL ($60 if you are in a regional area) or you will pay $66.50 if you get your phone line with them as well (after the 5% discount).

They do not support naked ADSL and if you buy the hardware from them, it will cost you $74 delivered.
    http://www.clubtelco.com/broadband_compare_plans.html

Is anyone aware of ANY UNLIMITED (or at least 100GB) ADSL2+ plan WITH NO CONTRACT that is cheaper than this?

If so, please let me know as I am currently in the middle of doing my annual review of all my service providers. Cheers

    • +1

But you need to be a "Club Telco" member, which costs $50 a year.

Club Telco is a reseller. So you can't credit them for your stable connection; it all depends on whose infrastructure they hooked you up to. It's a lottery. Apparently they resell a lot of TPG, which for me turned out very bad when I was with Netspace.

But if what you have now works well for you, then my suggestion is not to change it in order to save a few $. It sounds to me like you are getting a pretty good deal.

      • it all depends on whose infrastructure they hooked you up to. It's a lottery.

According to their website, the underlying infrastructure now is always Telstra. This might also be why they have raised the price of their unlimited plan from $25 to $40

        • According to their website, the underlying infrastructure now is always Telstra

Highly doubt that considering the Eftel DSLAM network which is in the ClubTelco network (and realistically they're the same company).

Also in reply to Make It So - as far as I'm aware, TPG don't, and never have, wholesaled their DSLAM network. but ClubTelco have definitely never wholesaled TPG ports. Neither have Netspace, they use to use Powertel/Optus/Telstra DSLAM ports. Now I believe they only use Chime/Telstra ports.

Just to let people know how I went, in case they are considering it:

Signed up 6 days ago, got my modem within 2 business days, and just had my ADSL switched over (4 business days). I was with Iinet before; my connection with Iinet was about 6Mbps a year ago, but the last 4 months more like 4.8Mbps and unstable. My connection with Belong is running at 6.1Mbps at the moment, so a definite improvement.

Belong did end up returning my call yesterday, and apologised for the delay. He was very honest and upfront, and provided me with the ADSL username & password (which is different from the account credentials) because I want to use my own modem at first.

All in all a good and fast experience. No contract, and better value (and better connection) than I got out of my grandfathered Iinet plan (who told me the only way to get the plan I wanted was signing up for 2 years - no thanks).

My opinion: a service worth considering, especially with the zero-connection fee, no-contract, and $1 modem.

    • And I can confirm that my monitored alarm can still dial out to ADT's 13xx number.

  • Offer has been extended till May 30
