just wondering if there is a free option that you would recommend as I want my children to be safe on he internet
How do you make Google kid-safe?

Turn the computer off !! Don't allow them to be on it without supervision ever & after a certain period of time whilst checking the sites they are on. Obviously put a password in which only you know to allow non use should they try to turn it on again. You have to be so careful nowadays with all these evil people out there, so good luck - know there will probably be screaming & shouting from them - but you are the responsible adult, just trying to protect them.
what is DNS? like to try the other way, but no the limits of what I can do, and when I am at work then they are always on it, so would prefer a kidsafe option, thanks

Its easy to set up, and also possible to change the settings while you are at work using the online dashboard. The OpenDNS Family Shield package is free and that's all you need.
Another option is to buy Norton 360 Internet Security from Dick Smith, claim the cashback (essentially making the purchase free, gain $1 profit), and use the parental lock features of norton.
I'm pretty sure you can override OpenDNS blocking with a password.
You will need to use a third-party software usually Internet Security or some high-class Anti-Virus', this will enable parental controls.
