  • Yay, I've just about finished all my Abbott's from last week's sale so this is great timing :)

      • +2

he may have made questionable choices, but his bread is amazing

its about the principal not the pudding

give your boss some flours for a raise and then maybe you'll end up with bun in the oven

    • +1

That sounds kinda seedy but I will give it a baking hot dough.

    Stick to posting bargains :P

    Great deal thanks OP

  • +3

I wish I had more freezer space to stock up on this bargain.

    Pumpkin seed loaf ftw!

    • Try getting a rain check!

      • +1

But if they have plenty of stock, which my local Woolies did today when I checked, you can't get a rain check, right?

I purposely went late in the afternoon too, hoping they would've sold out of all loaves, but nup.. they had a mountain of Helgas. Might try even later tomorrow to see if I can score some rain checks :)

        • Good question.

I must admit I'm a rain check newb, myself. I am of the opinion that if a store has stock, then don't ask for a rain check. However, if they don't have stock, then get the rain check.

    • In Melbourne at least, there is an amazing bakery called Firebrand in St Kilda that do a pumpkin seed loaf for about the same price, but it would be 4x as good, give it a try.

I love seeded bread but travelling 900+km for it might just break the bargain aspect lol. Thanks for the tip, though.

  • True ozbargain'ers prefer the $1.15 coles loaf (with 5% Ing cashback, of course)

    • +2

Cheap bread dies an early death, unfortunately.

      • it depends how the bread is baked :P as a coles baked instore loaf SHOULD last 5 days depending on how its baked. as for the smartbuy its probably treated like crap meaning it will have an early death ;3.

        • Don't Coles bake in Ireland freeze and send it down under. That's why ur bread lasts so long, it's hardly natural.

        • no that was some coles finest range and some of the expensive bread :P its all now baked in Australia….. then frozen lol

    • wait whaa? is the smartbuy white bread $1.15 near you?

      • I didn't realize there were multiple coles branded breads. The one I get occasionally was actually $1.00 last year! $1.15 is a whopping 15% inflation :(

        • that is pretty crazy, but your supporting a good cause while buying the bread aswell ;) Redkite

$1 bread in coles and woolies. as a ozbargainer i always buy $1 bread. this is 262% dearer

    • +9

      But it's 262% better…

      • +3

Remember too that Helga's loaves are 850g whereas the Coles Smart Buy weighs in at 600g.

    • +1

as a ozbargainer i always buy $1 bread

Don't confuse being a tight arse with being an ozbargainer. They are mutually exclusive

    • Actually it's only 162% dearer ;)

  • lol

Just get the aldi equivalent, tastes better for $2 every day.

    • +1

Which bread is that? The ones similarly shaped to Helga's? If so, I used to routinely get the Soy Linseed one from Aldi. Great tasting bread, but I noticed they don't stay moist/fresh as Helga's bread does.

It'll still be good, no signs of going off… but it'll become noticeably drier :( if you're put off by dry bread with your sandwiches, it's a deal breaker, but it'd be perfectly good for toast.

Might just be an issue with my local Aldis though. I wonder if others have noticed similar issues with other Aldis..?

      • +11

I used to work at buttercup, they make both helgas and the aldi brand, it's exactly the same bread. If we were ever low on orders for aldi, we'd rebag the helgas and send it off to aldi. The normal white bread at aldi is the same as wonder white as well.

        • +4

No surprise there :) I used to work for Pace Farms and its the same story with eggs (and probably 80% of groceries).

Yet we continue to get people saying they can taste a difference or notice a difference in longevity/dryness. Its all in the mind - marketers know all too well

        • +1

The freshness of our bread always varied for most brands apart from the wonder white (that was baked locally, we had much better control over that stock), so this could have something to do with it. Also the more popular bread sells first obviously letting merchandisers rotate the fresher stock onto the shelves, the less popular bread doesn't even get delivered every day in some circumstances. So definitely some room for people to notice differences in freshness, it just probably won't be consistent.

        • Do you know how many people's minds you could blow with your knowledge?
I've been saying the same stuff for years, because I know/knew people who worked for different companies like bread factories, other groceries, etc
I always find it hilarious that people will spend $6 for something that is exactly the same as the $1/$2 product!!!

        • +1

Awesome, thanks for the insider info re: Buttercup making both brands! :) Doesn't really surprise me either but it's interesting to have it confirmed.

I agree with what you say about stock rotation… I suspected that was the reason behind my local Aldi's bread seeming drier and less fresh than my local Woolies Helga's bread. The aforementioned Aldi is busy but the breads aren't nearly as popular as the far busier Woolworths… their Helga's sells out before the late afternoons usually, while my Aldi's soy & linseed Helga's style bread would be available until late at night. So the freshness factor is probably due to demand/stock rotation and even possibly transport/storage differences. I remember the Aldi bread being sooooo lovely and moist once upon a time. At a busier Aldi, I'm sure this issue wouldn't really exist.

          Cheers man!

My experience described above isn't in the mind, I assure you lol. I've very happily bought the cheapest home-brand loaves and found them to stay moist/fresh for days and days, and I've bought the odd expensive loaves and found they've dried out quicker. Plenty of factors explain it, not just the whole "oh it's cheaper, so it must be inferior quality". Stock rotation would be a big one.

      • Love the Aldi, walked straight past the Helga offering in Woolies couldn't see the point

    • +3

      more like $2.89…

  • I like Helga traditional wholemeal. The other two brands taste weird.

  • The aldi stuff is ok, I often wondered if it was made by Helga.

    • +5

JigBew above used to work at Buttercup, he should be able to tell you what her name was

      • +3

It's all a scam, it's baked by bogans you wouldn't shake the hand of.

In response to Ronnie though, it's the same bogans making both the Helga's and Aldi varieties. As I said above, if we came up short for an order, we would rebag the bread (linseed for linseed, wholemeal for wholemeal etc).

        • +1

Does Aldi have the Pumpkin Five Seed Helga's equivalent?

        • +1

If memory serves, no. The Aldi selection isn't as wide. It has been a while since I worked there though, my memory could be failing me.

        • +1

Negative on a Pumpkin Seed equivalent @ Aldi. That's the main reason I stick to Helga's and buy up when they're on special like this lol. Dem seeds…
