Best Value Mobile Plan?

Hi guys,

My vodafone contract has 3 months left remaining in the contract, and they're offering me free upgrade now. I'm currently on the $29 plan with only 200mb data (don't bother me as i have wifi at work & home, but could use a bit more for idle data). I asked about upgrading to the S4..it's gonna cost me additional $19 a month to get it under the $29 plan, or $40 plan ($500mb data) + $15 for phone. Looks pretty ordinary deals to me. I don't really need a new phone, using a S3 now in perfect condition, but i thought might as well upgrade to new phone if I can sell the new phone for money.

Like to hear what you guys saw on there might be better deal. Thanks for your input!

I was on the same condition as yours 3 months ago. mine is $30 plan - the new 4G-capable plan.

I decided to port to telechoice $20 plan. http://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers
Telstra 3G network and the cap includes international calls(not sms).

There are many other cheap plans, but dont include international calls on their cap.

    • Hi, I'm looking into getting the $20 plan that is, the one you've linked which is apparently a "Kogan Customer" special? It looks great and all, but I dont understand how it is a special when the plan is here listed as ordinary?:

      http://www.telechoice.com.au/about/news/mobile-plans/global-…

Just wondering what the fuss about this "Kogan" customer deal is, thats all.

Please clarify :) My current Vodafone contract ends in a month and I need a new one.

      • easy, the kogan deal get your $20/month on 12 months contract instead of 24

        • Cheers mate.

      • This is the forum post about kogan mobile
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113134

Its a special link that is not advertised on the normal website.
It is normally $25 per month for 12 month plan.

        • Thanks :)

    • Just been nosing around, seems the "$500 credit" would soon get eaten up with 2 minute call costing $2.34.
      Am I missing something?

      • ???

Its normal to have a 2 minute call to cost $2.34 on these monthly cap plan.

Take a look at Vodafone plan for instance,

Standard voice calls 98c per minute + 40c flagfall
        So a 2 minute call costs $2.36.

What I'm getting at is would one of the cheaper monthly plans (with other companies) work out a better deal? A lot of those have credit, though not as "big" but have call costs of 10-15c a minute, some with no flagfall.

        • +1

you'd have to choose whichever plan is best suited for you. anyway, i dont think it would be a better deal.

          let's compare amaysim vs telechoice.

          amaysim charges
          Standard calls (mobile & landline)
          9c/min (18c/2mins)
          Flagfall
          FREE

Amaysim Flexi $19.90 plan gives you $19.90 credit each month.
So a 2 minute call costs $0.18, you can make roughly 19.90/0.18= ~110 calls.

whereas, telechoice gives you $500 credit each month,
          500/2.36= ~211 calls

        • I can see your point on that one, haven't compared them all myself yet.

I guess what really gets my goat is companies showing what I consider to be "false credit". No way these days is $1.17 per minute call real or realistic.

        • You're only working that out now?
Been that way in mobile from day dot!

        • Yes, I know it has and it's about time it was stopped.
          In effect, it's false advertising.

  • Try this site as well, http://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones but I agree that Telechoice is hard to beat.

  • My wife is currently on Telechoice, moving from LC, so far so good with them. But the downside of going Telechoice is by the time my contract finish with Voda in 3 months time, the kogan offer probably gone by then. So a bit of dilemma of whether to wait or not..

  • just sign up now, get the sim card delivered and port when you are ready.

  • would they wait 3 months though ?

For those living in a place where they get better Vodafone reception and reliability than on Optus (does happen), Hello Mobile has a direct pricematch for Amaysim's unlimited calls/text plus 4GB plan:
      www.hellomobile.com.au/plans/unlimited40.aspx

I haven't compared their other plans, but I'm guessing similar.
There's is a current signup offer for their 1GB data allowance plan on their homepage:
      www.hellomobile.com.au

      • I've just been chatting to live help on the site. Was offered the Unlimited 40 plan for $20 for 1st month (no contract) but can only do it by either calling them or asking for call back. I was talking to Liz - she gave me telephone customer assistance number 1300126999 extention 3004

        • Good result.
Let us know how you find the whole experience with them, including website interface and the like.

I have a postpaid mobile broadband account with Transact (also on Vodafone).
Keep track of your data usage pretty keenly on your handset, as data usage info from Vodafone to resellers is delayed by 24hrs or more.

I upgraded from an S3 to an S4, not really worth it feature wise. Slightly more powerful, longer battery life and a whole heap of gimmick features the average person would never use.

Samsung Galaxy S5 release is very near too.

Ozbargain style: Keep the S3, Perform a factory reset (makes it feel like new, removes clutter, improves battery life) and jump to a cheap month by month plan so you have the control.

    Try Amaysim, TPG or Vaya.

  • In case you are considering Amaysim (from memory the cap includes international calls and SMS), there's a OzBargain Referral link, as below. You both get $10 credit.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/amaysim_referrals

  • I have a Kogan mobile using TPG but Optus coverage is very patchy. Seems coverage may be better (for me) via Vodafone. Unsure about Telstra.

  • +1

WHODIDTHT, you might find the kogan branded mobile is 850UMTS and not 900UMTS which would mean your 2G coverage. Aldi sell similar Chinese mobiles too that are best on Telstra and (maybe) Vodafone.

Nokia's and other branded mobiles like HTC, Samsung ect… from Kogan ect, dont suffer from this problem but you always need to check. For Vodafone its 850/900, Telstra 3G 850 , Optus 900 & Telstra/Optus/Vodafone 4G 1800 at the moment.

    • I am getting 3G on the Kogan, though patchy. That's down to Optus coverage though.

      • I thought Kogan Mobile was no more due to the ISPOne fiasco.

        • +1

He's talking about his Kogan-brand phone.

Even on phones that don't have 900MHz reception (like Kogan phones), data reception is fine on Optus - via 2100MHz, but only in metropolitan areas and near surrounds.

  • Which carriers provide cheaper rates than these on the Telstra network?

    2 min standard call $2.38

Call rate: 99c per 60 seconds + 40c connection fee

    MMS: 50c each

    Video Messages: 75c each

    1GB Data
