  • I didn't know Sony makes hard drives!

    • +3

Ok its an upgrade kit - most likely a Toshiba hard drive or something so yeah added that into the title thanks :P

    • They make the HDD mounting bracket specifically designed for the PS3 which holds the internal HDD which the internal HDD itself is made by another company.

Sony does make hard drives.they have external hard drives which are on sale at jbhifi for $109.

They also make internal hard drives.

      • Really? Where is their hard drive factory?

      • I'll never forget the day at work I open a Maxtor external HDD casing to find a Western Digital inside (or was that the other way around?). Either way, proof that the brand on the outside isn't always the same as inside.

        • +1

That is very weird because Maxtor were the 3rd largest HDD manufacturer before they were acquired by Seagate.

  • +2

Don't forget you can sign upto their email for the $5 off code.

    • Nice so free delivery!

      • Delivery is $5.95 normally, so not quite free.

    • -2

I already ordered and didnt know .. Missed $5 OFF ..NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

      • With so many O's, you don't deserve free delivery.

        • Just picked mine up from Martin place now :) Saved on Delivery.. only cost to me was two feet and a heart beat to get me there.

        • +1

          Awesome.

Better off buying a 2.5" HDD from MSY. You can get 500GB - 750GB for that price.

    • True, but that involves driving to MSY.
      Wait 20-30mins
      Say you want item
They will say NO STOCK NO STOCK DO NOT KNOW WHEN COME HERE.
      Then you go back home.

      • +8

it seems people don't know how to call them up to check for stock

        • +3

Do they still not pickup the phone? I remember back in the day they never pickup the phone. Esp when there are like 10people in line.

      • +1

And they have improved heaps compared to 5 years ago… at least in Pascoe Vale.

        • -1

oh right… Maybe, I havent used them in a long time.

        • Ditto, I've had no troubles with them, they help out and even suggest "better" option, and price is ok.

        • price is ok

Where's cheaper than MSY as a rule?

    • If you dont mind waiting 2 to 3 weeks for your super slim hard drive bracket to arrive in the mail from the Chinese Ebay sellers yeah!

Aussie sellers are flogging it off for $24 and its sold out everywhere now VS the $12 it used to cost at jbhifi, Ebgames ext..

    • +2

Definitely, or any other place. It's not an xbox, who cares whether it's 'genuine' or not?

      I upgraded mine to a 750GB 7200rpm a few years back for ~$70. 250GB for $63 is a rip.

Edit: I suppose it's alright if you can't get the 'super slim mounting bracket' anywhere else.

      • +1

Double true. I just cancelled the order. I havent even touched my ps3 in like 3 months. It has GTA5 on it and it's 12GB, and it's at my grandma's house. lol

You guys just saved me $68 of impulsive ozbargain buying.

        • +2

Turd.. hop on ebay and buy a super slim bracket for $5 Free delivery from Chinda/Hongkong .. Say in 3 weeks when it arrives you may want to toss a spare or cheapo 2.5" hard drive in it and put it into the PS3.. either way u only lose $5 bux

        • Excellent plan - future proofing myself for $5. Will order one now and sit it aside (as per my post further down).

        • Thanks!

  • I'm going to grab a second PS3 when the prices come down, but don't know whether I'll end up with a 12GB unit or one of the models with a larger HDD already installed. Will be a gamble to buy this if I end up not needing it!

As others have noted, you can get a 2.5" SATA HDD that is larger and cheaper, but you still need the mounting plate which is now harder (and pricier) to find locally.

    Think I'll pass for now!

    • Pre-order the bracket for $5 on ebay then tuck it away somewhere for when you need it.

      • Purchased - thanks for the recommendation! Will set it aside for possible future use… or not!

    • Or just use an old 240GB SSD :)

  • Unless I'm mistaken isn't this just a notebook harddrive? It may be branded for PS3, but you can put any 9.5m thick notebook harddrive into your PS3.

You can pick up a 500gig notebook from places like Umart for under $60. That's twice the size for a cheaper cost. The harddrives are no different, other than size and manufacturer.

That may be a better alternative.

    • you still need the metal bracket which admittedly you can get off ebay for a few bucks

  • The PS3 120GB is about $200 on sale + this = $270.

    Might as well get a PS2 320GB aroun $300?

    • PS2 320GB aroun $300? ^__^ interesting i want one!

  • do you really need the metal bracket? or could you kind of 'wedge' the hard drive in. As long as the connection is ok I wouldn't see it as a problem….

So you could wedge it in until the bracket arrives from overseas :)

    • Yes it's what holds the HDD secure into the PS3. Otherwise the HDD could lodge itself lose from the connection especially if you move the PS3 around a lot or shake it.

Besides this PS3 250GB hard drive comes with the mounting bracket in the box.

Also why couldn't you have just bought the PS3 hard drive mounting bracket locally from Australia?. I mean a lot quicker than getting one from overseas.

      • Or check out the ebay link further up the page if you aren’t in a hurry as it’s a $5 purchase rather than $20-plus.

      • I've temporarily squashed mine in without the cage. Just have to make sure not to move it and all should be good :)

I 'needed' the hard drive to be installed so I can play the last of us DLC ;) Can't wait!

    • as you remove and add the disks on the PS3 it may come loose.. you may want to be gentle with it.

  • -1

Will it work with the original PS3? 20gb etc?

    • +1

No . This only works with ps3 super slim. you dont need a bracket for the ps3 20gb as the old 20gb 2.5" drive has a bracket.. all u need is a new larger 2.5" hard drive from a pc store and to go on youtube to watch how to install it..

  • I got a 120gb slim. Can I use the existing bracket or do I really need to get a new one? Or should I just get a standard 2.5 inch HD? Do they need a bracket also?

    • +2

if you have a PS3 ALREADY with a hard drive.. you just need to replace the current 2.5" hard drive in its Current Bracket! kinda like a swop of the drive using the same bracket.. then slot it back. Only need a bracket for the 12GB version as that is flash memory and there is no 2.5" hard drive therefor there is no bracket.

  • I've pensioned off my PS3 to my daughter as she wanted a Media Player that can read recorded content off the Panasonic PVR, works great! and she gets a BluRay/DVD/CD/USB player as well.

I'll wait a little for the PS4 to come down in price and then might pull the trigger at the $400 mark with 2 controllers and GT7.

  • Is this a wd comptabile X box 360 drive?

    • No highly doubt that.
